BUILDING CYBER RESILIENCE

Cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, such as the Colonial Pipeline, are increasing in frequency and size. Concurrently, infrastructure operators are implementing new technologies that increase efficiencies, but these could also make their assets more vulnerable to cyberattacks. How can the industry embrace digital adoption while managing cyberthreats? What can be done about zero-day exploits—that is, cyberattacks that occur the same day a vulnerability is discovered by a hacker? What preventive strategies might reduce downtime?

Panelists:

Mark Fialkowski, President Mobility Solutions, Parsons

Marc Ganzi, Chief Executive Officer, Digital Bridge

Shinichi Yokohama, Chief Information Security Officer, EVP Security and Trust, NTT Group

Moderator: Swarna Ramanathan, Partner, McKinsey & Company

Reports of Internet services monitoring indicates that the latest news about the cyber attacks so large that made the Internet slowly creep around the world was a little dramatic.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (Denmark) is now also reacting to the drone flight over Copenhagen Airport.-

What we witnessed last night is the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date. This says something about the times we live in and what we as a society need to be prepared to handle

- We certainly do not exclude any options regarding who is behind this. And it is clear that this ties into the developments we have observed recently with other drone attacks, airspace violations, and cyberattacks on European airports.

This session presents key findings from the 2025 ITF Transport Outlook and discusses implications and challenges for the global shift towards a more resilient, sustainable, and decarbonised transport sector. Speakers include Diana Ürge-Vorsatz, Juan Carlos Muñoz, Minister of Transport and Telecommunications, Chile and Maruxa Cardama, Secretary-General, SLOCAT.

"27 June 2017: Cyberattack paralyzes several thousand computer systems. Over half a dozen countries were affected.

June ending saw a major global cyber attack that could be compared with WannaCry ransomware attack of the last month. Many leading businesses were affected with Shipping giant AP Moller-Maersk, Russia’s biggest oil company, many Ukrainian Banks, Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Mondelez (a company that owns snack brands like Oreos and Cadbury), Ukraine’s company Kyivenergo, India’s Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), an Australian Cadbury chocolate factory, Russia’s Rosneft (ROSN.MM), and WPP (WPP.L) being the notable victims.

The computers running on MS Windows were infected with a hard to crack ransomware that continued encrypting and overwriting files until the ransom of $300 bitcoin was paid.

All in all, June 2017 was pretty eventful on the cybersecurity front." www.apvera.com/monthly-report-cyber-security-hacking-news...

"This job used to make me miserable because of the anxiety stemmed in the guilt for being in "Attack Mode" all the time until one day, I decided to give in, and fully embrace my inner sociopath and narcissistic tendencies. When I did this, and forgave myself for doing so, I felt both at peace and a new form of inner rage simultaneously, and at this moment, I became dangerous."- James Scott, Senior fellow, ICIT and CCIOS

A woman waiting in line at the bake sale at St. Martin the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church in Jenkintown, PA on Saturday March 19, 2022 was intently swiping away at a “2048”type of online game called “Play for Ukraine” on her smart phone. The event, attended by several hundred, if not more than a thousand, people waiting in a long line to purchase pierogis, borscht, sausage, roasted potatoes, sauerkraut, cakes and pastries was raising money for medical supplies and also for equipment for the Ukrainian military. Five stations inside the social building accommodated the patient crowd. Outside, re-enactors dressed in 17th century costumes had a tent display and talked about the close historical and geo-political ties Ukraine has had with neighbors such as Poland.

“It’s a serious game” the woman said and pointed out how many attacks the game notified her she had made on the Russian military. She had accessed the game through the official Ukrainian Facebook site. According to several news reports, the game is part of Ukraine’s effort to recruit the vibrant Ukrainian crypto community into a volunteer IT army. Reports say nearly 300,000 volunteers have been organized through the Telegram messaging app and, using VPN,and are tasked with different missions.

“It doesn’t matter whether I win or no,” the woman said as she busily doubled 2s to 4s, 4s to 8s, etc. According to media source Fast Company, each move a player makes effects a DDOS (Dedicated Denial of Services) attacks on a targeted Russian website. www.fastcompany.com/90732766/ddos-play-for-ukraine-russia... It is natural behaviour for most attackers targeting an application to perform extensive research about the application, its services and categories of users accessing the application. The research usually starts with an ‘information gathering’ phase which includes collecting information about the application stack and usernames that are available to any random user who has access to the application, in addition to observing contact-us forms’ structures.
