Hispano-Suiza Type H6B 'Skiff Torpedo', 1922
Luxury cars like this were affordable only for the very rich and were made bespoke for each customer. In 1919, the wealthy benefactor Suzanne Deutsch de la Meurthe bought the chassis of this car at the Paris Auto Salon. She then sent it to a specialist coach-building workshop to be customised with a 'skiff torpedo' body. This hand-crafted commission would have been hugely expensive and exacting, but it signified to everyone - from her peers to passers-by - that Madame la Meurthe was a person of refined tastes and deep pockets.
