Ben Franklin has great respect for her ingenuity, skill and beauty – he called the turkey "very courageous" and "a real Native American". Franklin even suggested naming the turkey, rather than the eagle, as the national animal of the United States.
In this photo, a typical street in Portugal is captured with colorful clothes hanging out to dry. The narrow street is lined with traditional Portuguese buildings with red-tiled roofs, white walls, and blue accents. The clotheslines are strung between the buildings, and the vibrant clothes create a beautiful contrast against the neutral-colored buildings. The photo captures a slice of everyday life in Portugal, where hanging clothes out to dry is still a common practice.

Spitok monastery set to grand mountainscape, Ladakh (Little Tibet), high Himalayas. Perched on a hill close to Leh, Spitok responds well to its site. I delighted in the architectural way its stepping forms relate so well to the stepping of the Stok Range mountains beyond. The style is recognisably Tibetan. Openings are few and increase in size only in the upper-levels where they're provided with wooden balconies. The high, sloping walls are painted white externally -- think of it fused to the snow landscape in the long winter.
While it looks imposing from the north, seen here, the view from the south is even more impressive: tier upon tier of monastic village crowding the steep hillside.
as the clock ticks towards midnight, a beacon of warmth glows in front of valencia's estació del nord. under a canopy of golden lights, a churrería stands, its sweet aroma mingling with the cool night air. this is where sugar-dusted memories are made, where churros and buñuelos tempt the night owls and late travelers. the patrons, silhouetted against the vibrant stall, are momentarily united by the universal language of comfort food. it's a scene that captures the essence of valencian nights: lively, inviting, and rich with tradition.

Taken from a bus somewhere between San Jose and Sarchi. The only (I believe) remaining oxcart factory is in Sarchi.
For over 100 years, farms near Sarchi have been producing some of the country’s best coffee beans. Needing a sturdy way to transport this precious cargo to ports on the coast, a demand for ox-drawn carts was born. The earliest oxcarts of Sarchi, dating back to the late 1800s, were simple and functional. But as time went on, craftsmen began incorporating their own unique markings to distinguish their carts. By the beginning of the 20th century, competition among artisans was strong, and carts were decorated with elaborate geometric patterns, similar to the designs that can be seen today.
This fence displays the painting styles and traditions of the oxcarts.
"Oxcart traditions in Costa Rica" is on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Black and white portrait of a woman in traditional Hungarian folk costume, hands on hips, taken in Hungary, 1933.
This photograph showcases a beautifully arranged Haft-Seen table set against the backdrop of a tranquil seaside view. The table is adorned with traditional items symbolizing the Iranian New Year, Nowruz, including vibrant tulips and hyacinths, sprouting wheatgrass, an apple, garlic, a painted egg, and small bowls containing symbolic items. Two glowing candles add warmth to the scene, enhancing the festive ambiance. The natural light filtering through the curtains complements the elegant setup, making this a perfect representation of cultural celebration and serene beauty.

一位老人正在公園地面上用水寫書法,文字隨著時間漸漸消失,展現出瞬間藝術的美感,也彰顯了傳統文化的魅力。這是一幅安靜而深刻的日常景象。
An elderly man writes calligraphy with water on the ground in a park. The characters slowly fade away over time, showcasing the fleeting beauty of ephemeral art and the charm of traditional culture. It is a quiet yet profound scene from daily life.

Back in November, I had the chance to come across a traditional wedding parade in the village of Tete Batu.
The "Nyongkolan" brings the entire village together to march through the streets toward the bride's house. Everyone is dressed in traditional Sasak clothing, with drums pounding and joyful singing, symbolizing the celebration of the blessed union of the newlyweds.

Europe, Netherlands, Zuid Holland, Rotterdam, Wilhelminapier, RoK Navy academy performers (uncut)
Last Sunday while on our way to the (Euromast)Park for an autumn walk we encountered some Asian officers and we remembered that there was a small South Korean Navy task force in town. So we went to the Wilhelminapier instead and had a look at the two ships: the destroyer Kang Gam Chan and the supply ship / oiler Dae Chum.
We learned that the ships are on a celebratory and training mission around the world. The celebration was about the 'ending' of the Korean war 65 year ago. The training part involved 140 cadets of the RoK Navy academy. They participated in a fascinating cultural program involving a welcome for Dutch Korean war veterans (we spotted only one and he was warmly welcomed and seated in the group of South Korean dignitaries and top brass) and amongst other things performances of a choir, a big band, traditional performers and a spectacular tea-kwondo demonstration.
Shown here is a group of traditional musicians / acrobats. They put in a very lively performance

This scene with a run-down hotel next to a street in dire need of repairs, under a dramatic sky, captures the essence of the small town of Jokkmokk. It's the kind of view that brings to mind a remote town in the American Midwest. However, Jokkmokk isn't situated in the United States; it's actually in northern Sweden's Norrbotten province, nestled within Lapland, approximately 800 kilometers north of Stockholm. The region experiences harsh winters with frigid temperatures, which could account for the street's sorry state.
What sets Jokkmokk apart is its strong connection to the indigenous Sámi people, who have called this place home for centuries. The town stands as a hub for Sámi culture and traditions. One of its standout events is the Jokkmokk Winter Market, a yearly gathering held in early February. This market draws visitors from around the world, showcasing Sámi handicrafts, traditional clothing, and local cuisine, providing a unique cultural experience at the heart of Lapland.
During our visit in late July last year, we were truly impressed by the surrounding region, renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, including lush forests, pristine lakes, and majestic mountains.

"Karsha, Zanskar. There are four major schools or sects within Tibetan Buddhism: Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakyu and Gelug. The Karsha monks belong to the Gelug or ‘Yellow Hat’ order, the newest of the four schools to form, founded in 1409. Nyingma, the first school, was founded in the 8th century."
