Saturday 28 November 2009: Really old and easy pieces (shut up) with another pair of fantastically comfy and sexy Destroy boots for a Saturday date night with Hottie McHusband. For ages I've been wanting to make a dress/top that would be versatile and fit most of the girls in my collection. I finally got around to it and this is the result. Naturally, the fit is different on different dolls, but all the gals here can wear it, along with the short-strap cross-body bag. It was also a good excuse to take this group photo! I recently got a favourite fashion from my childhood; #1911 from the debut ‘My First Barbie’ fashion range from 1980/81. Yes, it’s VERY simple, almost ‘nothing!’ - but I remember loving this outfit so much, (as red and purple were one of my favourite colour combinations back then, and I loved that cute little headscarf!) I used to dress my Beauty Secrets Barbie in this, (and she might have a crack at it later,) as I didn’t have a ‘My First Barbie’ back then, even though I have one now as you can see on the right… She is dressed in her original swimsuit and pants that were sold with her, and accessorized with a cute logo cross-body bag from another outfit from the ‘Fashion Collectibles’ range, also from 1980/81. I didn’t want to undo her original beribboned side ponytail to wear that headscarf, so she is staying in her outfit! I finally decided that my Malibu Christie should wear this first, as I loved those strong colours with her beautiful skintone, and she was sitting forlorn in the café of the Fashion Plaza in a swimsuit she had worn for ages, so it’s time she joined Barbie in the Townhouse in a great new outfit!

This is one of the outfits from the early 80’s I wanted the most as it reminds me so much of what I was sketching when I started illustrating fashion around 1982. This was such a big look throughout the early 1980’s, (particularly with designers such as Ralph Lauren and even with our own Country Road here in Australia…) which explains why this outfit, titled ‘Autumn Stroll’ appeared in Sindy’s collection later in 1984. Love that lace edged blouse (Very Princess Diana!) and broderie anglaise petticoat (cleverly attached together as a one piece underdress!) underneath that very full plaid skirt and matching sweeping shawl, which was the covering of choice back then, and was always so much fun to illustrate! Also love that little leather cross-body bag, those dark chocolate brown cowboy boots and that fair isle sweater (an essential ingredient of this ‘New-Wave Prairie’ look!) I styled this look exactly as how it was worn back then, with some thick ribbed grey tights (borrowed from the Brooke Shields doll) and a plaid scarf wrapped around her head (the variation scarf from her 1980 coat outfit ‘Autumn Leaves’.) Even my choice of model was inspired by that time. These looks were almost always shown on a glorious redhead with a wild mane of teased hair, so my 1976 auburn haired Lovely Lively gets the honour of modelling it here, as her high colour makeup stands up to the rich, dark shades of the clothes. Even the setting is inspired by how this outfit was photographed in the magazines back then…
…And the winner is … DISCO GOLD! (Thanks to all those who voted… the very close runner up will be the next thing I shoot!) Dana is making the scene at Darci’s Disco in my one of my all-time favourite Darci outfits, which is one I always wanted Dana to wear! I made the gold braided headband from some metallic ribbon I had on hand that perfectly matched the gold of this outfit… LOVE those gold cuffs and that very ‘disco’ cross-body bag! And it was interesting to find that those very late 70’s ankle ties on those pants are actually SEWN on. Darci and Dana are ready to boogie the night away in their glittery disco finery…
Just got Sindy’s handsome dapple-grey horse (I can’t believe how big and heavy it is!) and some new riding outfits … just waiting on some more accessories, but couldn’t wait to shoot a pic of it all! I love the sporty simplicity and crisp, clear colours of her riding looks … Anyway, it was fun to improvise some of the accessories, like substituting that beige cravat that goes under Sindy’s 1981 red sweater riding outfit ‘Pony Club’, (on the blonde Active Ballerina.) I love how the variation red, black and camel checked scarf from ‘Autumn Leaves’ looks with that outfit, so I’ll probably leave it like that. I’m getting some more riding hats, stirrups and crops soon, and some more of Sindy’s black riding boots that you also see with that outfit, but in the meantime, I improvised with some other brown boots I already had under her yellow-sweatered/gingham check shirted riding gear ‘Pony Club’ from 1982 (on an Auburn-haired Lovely Lively. I also added the camel 'leather' cross-body bag from 'Autumn Stroll' that she was wearing with that outfit previously, ) and with the 1978 ‘Pony Rider’ horseshoe motif sweater outfit (on a brunette Lovely Lively.) I also got that fabulous red logo horse blanket, but hope to find the rest of that Horse Care Set it came with soon.
Connected to the knee bone
The skeleton print on these leggings goes all the way up to the waist, but I thought it would be tasteless to pull my skirt up any higher than I have. Rest assured, there are hip bones under there.
It’s Christmas, not Halloween, but I’m wearing skeleton leggings, all the same. I’m quite amused by how well the print lines up with my actual anatomy.
