Place Jacques-Cartier (Jacques Cartier Square) is a square located in Old Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is an entrance to the Old Port of Montreal.
In 1723, the Château Vaudreuil was built for Philippe de Rigaud, Marquis de Vaudreuil - its formal gardens occupying the space that is now the square. The Chateau burned down in 1803 and it was suggested by The Hon. Jean-Baptiste Durocher and The Hon. Joseph Périnault that the space be transformed into a public square, known as New Market Place. In 1809, Montreal's oldest public monument was raised there, Nelson's Column. In 1847, the square was renamed in honour of Jacques Cartier, the explorer who claimed Canada for France in 1535.
The broad, divided street slopes steeply downhill from Montreal City Hall and rue Notre-Dame to the waterfront and rue de la Commune. During the high tourist season, the street hosts many street artists and kiosks. During the Christmas season, the street is lined with lighted trees. At any time of year, one can find restaurants on both sides of the street and many more on the surrounding streets of Vieux Port, notably on Rue Saint-Paul.
It is a car-free zone in the summer. During the summer season, Jardin Nelson offers a garden restaurant on Place Jacques-Cartier. Other restaurants similarly offer classical Parisian-style "terraces" for taking a drink or dining in the open air. And on the other side of the place, the famous restaurant Saint-Amable (the oldest restaurant in town) welcomes Montreal celebrities and locals in a crooner jazz atmosphere.
Near Place Jacques-Cartier on rue de la Commune, an original piece of the wall of the old fortified city can still be seen in the basement restaurant of the Auberge du Vieux-Port. At the upper end of the Place stands Nelson's Column, built in memory of Admiral Horatio Nelson. The statue was removed in 1997 to preserve it from the weather, and was subsequently replaced with a copy.

I came across Nick Lucas and his recording of the song 'Looking at the World Thru Rose Colored Glasses' recently when I got lost in YouTube, again!
Lucas had quite a recording career which spanned from test cylinders for Thomas Edison in 1912 to the stereophonic age in 1980, with total disc sales in excess of 80 million copies. He was one of the first popular crooners on the radio and was dubbed as "The Crooning Troubadour"
Lucas also recorded Tiptoe 'Through The Tulips' I remember that one by the late Tiny Tim and his high falsetto voice!

My rose colored glasses are a couple of pen tops.
The Western Bluebirds, at least in this part of California, maintain their vibrant colors most of the year although they are at their "brightest" in breeding season. With the male, you'd swear it's breeding season year 'round.
By the way, the bluebirds (Western, Eastern, Mountain) and robins are thrushes, something which always surprised me since I expected better singing (like crooners) from them. The song sparrow and the wrens do a much better job.

The Carolina Wren is easily recognized by the white stripe above each eye and its distinctive "tail-up" posture that it assumes as it flits about the bushes. Energetic and vocal this little wren has one of the loudest songs of any small bird. Males sing their “tea-kettle-tea-kettle-tea-kettle-tea." song hundreds of times a day, all year long. One particularly busy bird was recorded singing almost 3,000 times in a single day!
Carolina wrens form lifelong pair bonds and pairs often stay together for years. The birds move and feed together, where you see one, you will usually see its mate foraging close by. The pair works together to build a nest, which can be in a tree hole or on a branch, but Carolina wrens are well known for choosing to nest in man made structures such as mail boxes, door wreaths, flower pots, or even a cardboard box in a garage. They use sticks, hair, feathers, and anything that looks suitable—even shed snakeskins. They often build multiple nests then select one to raise their chicks.
When feeding, a Carolina wren hops around on the ground and in the underbrush turning over dead leaves, and probing cracks and crannies for spiders, insects and larvae. They also eat fruit and berries, but rarely come to bird feeders.
A female lays 3-4 eggs, then incubates them for 14 days, during which time the male brings her food. The parents feed the chicks in the nest for two weeks, then, after the chicks fledge, the parents continue to feed them for a further two weeks. A pair of Carolina wrens can have three broods in a year.
This wren is the state bird of South Carolina.

Because I fell in love with the haunting, flutey songs that I heard when hiking through local forests, I have been looking for a cooperative Wood Thrush (Hylocichla mustelina) to photograph for quite some time. Frankly, the thrushes are songsters of unmatched beauty to my ear. Their calls are simply composed of notes and tones I would never have expected a bird to make. To me, they almost sound like video game sound effects from the 90s! You may hear the song here.
How do they accomplish these vocalizations? They, like other birds, don't have a larynx. Instead, they have a Y-shaped syrinx that allows them to sing two notes simultaneously. And they are masters of this trick, singing duets with themselves that would put human crooners to shame.
The two males were both working for the attention of the female to the left.
Meanwhile, it really was a good impression of two crooners on stage.

Corvus Blessed- The Country Crooner with Soul
Corvus Blessed, formerly known as Raven Roxley, is an amazing performer, variety singer, and songwriter. He is a country crooner, but his deep, melodious voice lends itself to rock, rap, pop, and R&B. Singing is in his blood, from singing with his sister in the kitchen at an early age to watching his dad perform with a bluegrass gospel band. He has an extensive song list of multiple genres and is a reliable performer. Corvus Blessed competed in the 2025 Viral Voice and was 2nd Runner-up. He also earned the Golden Buzzer for his soulful rendition of Bury Me in Georgia.

The marquis of the legendary Apollo Theater on 125th Street in Harlem paying tribute to superstar Natalie Maria Cole who passed away on the last day of 2015, December 31 at the age of 65. Natalie, the daughter of famous crooner Nat King Cole who succumbed to lung cancer back in 1965 was an incredibly talented entertainer whose music crossed multiple genres and had headlined here at the Apollo Theater many times. Her life was one of triumph, but she also overcame many obstacles in her life to achieve those triumphs of which the early death of her father was just the start. Natalie battled drug addiction most of her life, getting hooked when she was in college attending University of Massachusetts in Amherst, drugs that included heroin and crack cocaine. He health issues also included hepatitis C and 2009 she received a kidney transplant. “This Will Be”, one of her earliest and greatest hits [ youtu.be/lswB6q2t_6c ]is one of my all time favorites. She cancelled a few events in December 2015 as her health spiraled downward, in the link of her official website included in this posting, her family has a beautiful last statement about her. Natalie you will be missed, Rest in Peace.
I had posted an image and information about the historic Apollo Theater in New York last year [ flic.kr/p/y6Vwg7 ], about its early origins, its resurrection in the 1990’s. It was the first Harlem venue to allow mixed race audiences, African-American entertainers, and African-American theater workers, becoming the largest employer of black theater workers in the country back in the 1930’s. So many names that are now famous got their opportunity on the stage of the Apollo Theater, the Apollo Theater’s Amateur Night which was really “American Idol” way before the reality show. Back in 1934, when the venue completely changed over from burlesque (as a result of powerful campaign from NYC Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia to rid the city of burlesque) to variety format, a 17 year old high school dropout named Ella Fitzgerald belted out her first public tunes after being randomly chosen for one of the first Amateur nights. James Brown, "Godfather of Soul" recorded the critically acclaimed album “Live at the Apollo” there in 1962, considered one of the greatest live albums of all time. In 1967 the Jackson family made its trek in the VW Van to New York to perform on the stage of the Apollo as the Jackson 5, featuring a young Michael Jackson. As I reflect, I can sheepishly say I don’t feel old despite the fact I’m on the downhill side of middle age but truth be told, with Natalie Cole’s passing, I just realized all four artists mentioned in this posting are diseased with Ella being the only one who’s star shone brightest before my time……I guess I’m getting old afterall.
