We drove up into the hills of northern Crete, south-east of Heraklion, and around the town of Kastelli. Just outside Kastelli was this apparent war memorial. We thought it might be for the Cretans who had taken part in the resistance following the German invasion in May 1941; however, the plaque was only in Greek, and the only date on it was 1970, so I don't know if it was erected in 1970 to commemorate the events of 1941-1945, or perhaps it commemorates something that happened to Crete or Greece in 1970?

Crete - Boat Trip to Balos Beach

The church of St Vaslios, Koutouloufari, originally 14th century, restored after a bad fire in the 19th. I was lucky enough to visit when the cleaner was there, and had the altar screens open, enabling me to see through into the apse, that is normally hidden from view. The altar screens are stunning.
