I rented a road bike for two days when I was on Crete. We were based in Chania and on both days I explored the amazing mountains to the south.

This is home for the next three weeks. I shall not be doing much Flickring! Or anything much else either!
One day on Crete I was alone on my way to Omalos, where the entrance of the famous Samaria gorge is. My family prefered to relax at the hotel pool and that gave me the oportunity to go on a photo excursion.
On this journey I drove through beautiful landscapes. After every hill I get a new fantastic expression of the island. At Lakkoi I get this wonderful view. Lakkoi is 450 metres high, below the White Mountains which rise another 1,000 metres to the south. Most of the houses cling to steep slopes covered in olive and chestnut trees, reached through narrow roads or tracks that run down from the main square. Traditionally the villagers have cultivated olives and raised goats, sheep and chickens. With limited work opportunities, the population has declined from a peak of around 2,000 to about 400 today.

Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It forms a significant part of the economy and cultural heritage of Greece while retaining its own local cultural traits . Crete was the centre of the Minoan civilization (c. 2700–1420 BC), the earliest "high culture" civilization in Europe, which built the first palaces in Europe.
