A group of faculty and students "marched" from the steps of Old Main to the Sandburg Birthplace historical site, where the faculty shared readings as everyone gathered near Rememberance Rock on Thursday, April 27, 2023.

Members from some of the Writing Squads shared their poetry at this event presented by Maeve Clarke at the Ledbury Poetry Festival.

Wish You Were Here was an English PEN pilot project in partnership with Islington Word2012 festival. Letters were sent from students in a London school to young people of similar ages in a school in Freetown, Sierra Leone. We commissioned photographs of the letters once they’d arrived in the hands of their recipients. The project celebrated global citizenship through creative writing, encouraging an exchange of ideas through literature.

I don’t need a vest

to protect myself from you

just a nest

to erect against your tools

in protest

to detect whichever new

family crest

with its eyes of frosty blue

may request

that my life be over soon

never rest

let the light enshrine the moon

my behest:

let all thought rest until noon

when it’s best

wrap the moth in a cocoon

then just test

play peer gynt with a bassoon

interest

all adults in red balloons

Icarus

lay low during the monsoon

let me guess

it will all be over soon

While sitting on a green leaf, the primrose

- Watching the violet squinting in the sun -

Was combing her gold hair, scratching her nose

And thinking of the spring that has begun.

And she was smiling, and she would like to share

Her pretty views on seasons and the scent

Of other flowers, on the warmer air,

But she could not express the thoughts she meant.

The violet, looking up, was blown away

By gold and yellow gleaming in the green:

He tried to talk, although he would not say

His feelings: ‘cause for sure he was unseen.

They sat inches apart, to shy to start a speech:

The rain drenched their eyes, they cried a teardrop each.

(Sonnet by SiRiChandra)

Photoshopped, of course, because you seldom see violets and primroses sitting so near to each other.

I think blue angels are much cooler than those gay pastel ones in paintings.
