Night time in New Mexico while moving to Texas. The moving truck was flat out at 68 mph - the big rigs didn't have that problem.

I wrote up a how-to for taking ghostly shots like this one here: photography.muddyboots.org/ghostlyeffect

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA - The men, women - and canines of the Los Angeles City Fire Department were actively deployed during late summer and early fall of 2020 to massive wildfires across the western United States. Among those sent forth have been highly trained LAFD members assigned to California Urban Search and Rescue Regional Task Force 9 (CA-RTF-9), including human remains detection canines Veya and Charli, seen here at the massive North Complex Fire in northern California that spanned Plumas, Butte and Yuba counties, to perform the dolorous task of safely and respectfully recovering those who perished in the flames.

Subtitle: "Epic Fail"

At lunch today I decided to go out and try some insect macros. So, I headed out and not 15 feet from the car on an old Oak tree were several dozen of these caterpillars.

Sweet! So, I stopped there and started taking pictures with my Canon 100mm f/2.8 and my ring flash. Well, the flash was blowing them out and my shutter speeds were still too slow to hand-hold even at ISO 400 because I was in the shade (to avoid the harsh sunlight). Grr. I tried Manual, I tried TTL with low power -nothing really worked. It was either so slow it'd blur or blown out. Lovely.

So, I went back to the car and got my tripod. That worked since the caterpillars weren't moving, but I was really limited as far as the angle went, so the 'straight down' shots weren't so interesting and I came back with nothing but this shot to show for it.

I even shot a bunch of photos of a bee in the clover, but had the same issue with the flash. It's obvious I have no idea what I'm doing there. Will try again later.

Oh well. At least I got this one shot that shows the cool blue and red dots on the caterpillars. And I also met a biker / artist who gave me a baby buggy he carved out of a cherry pit. I'm taking pics of it for him tonight -they'll be posted by 9pm.
