Nebraska’s Crawford Hill is famous for the huge horseshoe curve just below Belmont, but there is another photogenic curve below there east of Crawford. On July 7, 1996, an all-Cascade green consist of two EMD SD60Ms and two GE C30-7s works through the curve on the climb to Belmont pulling a train on a brand new BNSF that hasn’t infiltrated the image yet.
Ligularia 'Britt-Marie Crawford' has just started blooming.
Ligularia dentata (Leopard plant, ’Maruba-dakebuki’ in Japanese) is a perennial flowering plant in the aster family, native to Japan and China. 'Britt-Marie Crawford' is a dark-leaved cultivar of L. dentata.

A steep hike down the canyon walls leads to the lower falls. The path to the upper falls requires a treacherous rock climbing expedition which we will reserve for the younger generation.

BNSF C-BTMLRT0-19B crawls at less than 10 MPH up Crawford Hill as the DPU of E-SAICAM8-04A descends the grade into the town of Crawford. This was the start to a beautiful Northwestern Nebraska Summer morning on the BNSF Butte Sub. The sounds and sights of Crawford Hill are ones that you'll never forget. Pretty spectacular views and many, many shot opportunities abound. Also shoutout to TJY Productions for the help!
Another BN coal train splits the signals at Belmont, Nebraska with a consist of new SD60Ms and C-boats. My one and only ever trip to see this railroading phenomenon, and all was right with the world.
The dirt road just visible above the second unit is the old right of way leading to abandoned Belmont Tunnel. Completed by CB&Q in 1889 and closed in 1982, it is the only railroad tunnel ever built in Nebraska.
The Conway Scenic Railroad's "Mountaineer" excursion arrives at Crawford Notch as the day's torrential down pour finally begins to lift.
Having traveled more than 25 miles and climbed 1400 ft in elevation the Conway Scenic Railroad's Mountaineer excursion has reached its turnaround point at the top of Crawford Notch along the famed former Maine Central Railroad Mountain Sub. The classic first generation power is running around just west of the Gateway beneath the watchful stoney gaze of Elephant Head. CSRR owned GP7 573 led west trailed by F7 4268 (the ex MEC and B&M duo were built by EMD in Sep. 1950 and Oct. 1949 respectively).

Three Burlington Northern EMD SD70MACs claw up Crawford Hill with a heavy coal train east of Crawford, Nebraska, on July 5, 1996.
An eastbound coal train climbs through the big horseshoe curve below Belmont on Nebraska’s Crawford Hill on September 16, 2008. Two former BN EMD SD60Ms are mated with warbonnet GE Dash 9 No. 767 on a manned helper pushing two rear DPU locomotives on the heavy loaded train, while the head end climbs on the upper leg of the horseshoe in the background.

A set of three Burlington Northern SD60Ms head downgrade back to Crawford, Nebraska, to push another coal load over Crawford Hill on July 21, 2003. A fuel tender is spliced into the power to lengthen the time between refueling for the busy helper set. Note the special device above the anti-climber on No. 9215 that lifts the pin allowing uncoupling of the helper on the fly at the summit at Belmont.
The Notch Train has finished the runaround and is ready for the trip back to North Conway as the sun breaks through clouds after a snow squall. It’s also nice to get a photo here without a car or person in sight.

Powering the train destined for loading in Wyoming’s vast Powder River Basin are BN EMD SD60M Nos. 9229 and 9297, Conrail GE C30-7 No. 6605 and BN GE C30-7 No. 5523.

The heart of the park is the eponymous meromictic lake: Crawford Lake. The lake is deeper than its surface area, so the lowest levels of water are very rarely disturbed, and little oxygen reaches the lowest levels. It’s the unique qualities of a meromictic lake that led to an exciting discovery—where science unveiled local history. Researchers and scientists found ancient corn pollen deep in the sediment of the lake. The presence of corn meant settlements, and thus this began the research, which concluded, that First Nations groups settled in this area over six hundred years ago.
In the summer of 2003, Crawford Hill on BNSF’s Butte Subdivision out of Alliance, Nebraska, featured at least three sets of Cascade green three-window EMD SD60M helper sets, mostly equipped with a fuel tender. On July 22, 2003, a trio of these former BN EMDs rolls downgrade at Breezy Point just west of Belmont, heading back to Crawford after pushing a BNSF coal train over the grade.

It's mid-morning and the Nebraska Northwestern crew has the RCP&E train to Crawford well in hand as they cross a dry wash along old U.S. 20 west of Dakota Junction. 24 cars make up today's train for interchange to BNSF

Arriving at the base of the falls. The falls are a good 20 feet high. I did try and negotiate with my wife to stand under the falls for perspective but cannot repeat her answer in a public forum. The path to the upper falls is to the left and would require a steep rock climb to the top of these falls then journey along the canyon bottom to the 60 foot falls. They tell me it's quite spectacular - i will take their word for it.
