The building was built in 1897/98 for the F. Laeisz company according to plans by Bernhard Hanssen, Wilhelm Emil Meerwein and Martin Haller in the style of the Hanover School of Architecture. The enclosed space was approximately 34,000 cubic meters. The construction costs amounted to 960,000 Reichsmarks, that is 28 Reichsmarks per cubic meter of enclosed space.

In addition to the shipping company Laeisz, major marine insurers had their business premises there from the start. Even today the house is still the headquarters of the shipping company F. Laeisz.

"It costs less at Sterchi's"

STERCHI BROS. STORES

to furnish your home.

From VanishingGeorgia.com.

This landmark, visible on Georgia Highway 22 between Gray and Haddock, is an amazing survivor from a time when the roofs of rural barns were used to advertise myriad businesses and attractions. The “See Rock City” barns have become icons, but many other businesses were promoted in this way. This example advertises Knoxville-based Sterchi* Brothers Furniture Company [It Costs Less at Sterchi’s], which was the largest furniture store chain in the nation in the early 20th century, with over 650 stores in the Southeast. There are only a few of these Sterchi barns documented, to my knowledge, and most are in Tennessee. It is believed that most are at least 80 years old.

Everyone should have made a horse sleigh ride in snow-covered mountains. In Poland a nine seated sleigh costs 100€. Per head thus 11€. Unfortunately we arrived so late in the afternoon that no other guest was there. After hard negotiations I could agree with the driver on 80€ for 2 persons.

The 9km drive to the stop at the "Morskie Oko" (mountain lake) was very nice. We had the sleigh for ourselves and felt on the way like in the movie "Dance of the Vampires".

However, one should always negotiate to the end;). Back from the photo stop at the mountain lake our sleigh was no longer there:-O. We had to jog the 9km in the twilight, then in the dark.

Eine Pferdeschlitten Fahrt in verschneiten Bergen sollte jeder gemacht haben. In Polen kostet ein neun sitziger Schlitten 100€. Pro Kopf also 11€ .

Last photos of Axel Towers for now. Promise.

Axel Towers is a cluster of cylindrical towers -- well towers in Copenhagen sense; they are not that tall, the tallest being only 61 meters. They have been designed by the very talented architect Lene Tranberg from the award winning Danish architect firm Lundgaard & Tranberg Arkitekter. Inauguration was in June 2017 and the buildings house offices, restaurants and other shops. Location is across the road from Tivoli and I dare not think what it costs to rent an office...

The Monument of the Little Insurgent is located at the outer defensive wall of the Old Town in Warsaw. It commemorates the youngest participants of the Warsaw Uprising.

The scouts from Chorągiew Stołeczna ZHP im. Bohaterów Warszawy made idea of monument project of the youngest Warsaw insurgents. Jerzy Jarnuszkiewicz donated his project to his scouts, which was already prepared in 1946, and prepared free documentation necessary for making the cast. Money to cover the costs of works related to the casting and setting up of the monument was collected by scouts.

The monument was unveiled on October 1, 1983 by the scout-insurgent of Warsaw, Jerzy Świderski, in the presence of scouts from Warsaw and other Polish cities.

St. Mark's Campanile Bell Tower, Venice, Italy

St Mark's Campanile is the bell tower of St Mark's Basilica in Venice, Italy, located in the Piazza San Marco. It is one of the most recognizable symbols of the city. The tower is 98.6 metres tall, and stands alone in a corner of St Mark's Square, near the front of the basilica.

It costs 8 Euros each for taking the elevator to the top for the magnificent views of Venice.

The south west coastal path is the longest of Britain's national trails measuring 101.4 kms (630 miles). This trail is based on the paths trodden around cliffs and coves for generations of coastguards. The route starts in Minehead on the Somerset coast and follows the coastline through Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and before finishing at South Haven Point in Poole, Dorset. Anyone completing the whole route will have effectively climbed the equivalent height of Everest four times. Subjected to coastal erosion the path costs around £1,400 per year to maintain for every mile of the path,

Digital photography is not cheap, it costs a lot of money. The cameras and lenses prices come down because new gears come out, just like computers. I bought a Nikon D800 for $2400 in 2014 from a grey market and so far it has 61000 shutter clicks. Now this camera costs $600 with better condition and lower shutter clicks in Ebay. Same with lenses. I want to say take pictures as much as you can because you will loose the value of your gears in short time, and you shouldn’t buy unnecessary lenses. I bought a Nikon 24-120mm F4 for a $1000 from Adorama, and now it cost about $500.

Director of White Horse Ferries, Peter Lay, said: “We are not generating enough fare revenue to operate costs. There are two separate issues.”

Democo has built a new town hall in Hasselt in collaboration with Kumpen. In 2018, a large number of municipal services and the CPAS moved to the site of the former gendarmerie barracks on Guffenslaan. This listed building is being restored for its new use. In addition, a new energy-efficient building stands behind the barracks. This new town hall illustrates a successful marriage between modern architecture and friendly services. The concept of the new town hall already anticipates the city's desire to operate in a completely climate-neutral way since 2020. This new building therefore meets the strictest energy requirements. Level K is barely 19 and level E varies around 29. Thanks to these efforts, the energy costs of the urban heritage now amount to only ±40% of the bill. With measures such as geothermal heat pumps, solar panels, energy-saving LED lighting and a green roof, the town hall becomes one of the most sustainable and economical town buildings in Flanders.

The city of Hasselt itself operates 14,000 m² of the 17,000 m² in this building. It rents the residual surface (3,000 m²) to third parties in order to encourage synergies. We are thus witnessing the emergence of catering establishments and shops in the neighboring districts. Democo provides complete management of the project in BIM, combined with system engineering.

The Salton Sea is a good place to capture a looming ecological disaster - in one of the most affluent places on the planet. I found it haunting, sad, disturbing, uncrowded and captivating. I hope that the State of California (and the federal government) can implement the needed remediations quickly, but high costs, existing water laws and political procrastination are preventing meaningful actions from being taken and the slow-motion disaster continues to unfold.

The Pont de Normandie is a cable-stayed road bridge that spans the river Seine linking Le Havre to Honfleur in Normandy, northern France. Its total length is 2,143.21 metres (7,032 ft) – 856 metres (2,808 ft) between the two piers. It is also the last bridge to cross the Seine before it empties into the ocean. Despite being a motorway toll bridge, there is a footpath as well as a narrow cycle lane in each direction allowing pedestrians and cyclists to cross the bridge free of charge. The bridge was designed by Michel Virlogeux, and the architect Norman Foster, the general studies were led by Bernard Raspaud from Bouygues, and the works management was shared between G. Barlet and P. Jacquet. The architects were François Doyelle and Charles Lavigne. Construction by Bouygues, Campenon Bernard, Dumez, Monberg & Thorsen, Quillery, Sogea and Spie Batignolles[2] began in 1988 and lasted 7 years. The bridge opened on 20 January 1995. At that time the bridge was both the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world, and had the record for the longest distance between piers for any cable-stayed bridge. It was more than 250 metres (820 ft) longer between piers than the previous record. This record was lost in 1999 to the Tatara Bridge in Japan. Its record for length for a cable-stayed bridge was lost in 2004 to the 2883 meters of the Rio-Antirrio. At the end of construction, the total cost for the bridge, all ancillary structures and finance costs was $465 million and was financed by Natixis. The bridge on its own cost €233 million (US$250 million). The cable-stayed design was chosen because it was both cheaper and more resistant to high winds than a suspension bridge. Shortly after opening, the longest cables exhibited excessive vibrations, so several damping systems were quickly retrofitted.

The running costs for the Reindeer alone is a fortune.

So it seemed a waste not to use the "breaking and entering" skills throughout the year.

Happy Christmas.

The main difference:-

intent: "Breaking and Entering" is often just the unauthorised entry itself (trespassing with a stronger term), while "Burglary" requires illegally entering a structure with the intent to commit another crime (like theft or assault) inside, making it a much more serious felony. Think of it as: Breaking & Entering = trespassing + entry; Burglary = Breaking & Entering + criminal purpose.

Curries could soon cost £30 and fish and chips up to £20 as restaurants and takeaways pass soaring energy bills and inflation onto their customers - after pub bosses warned of £20 pints and a steakhouse chain says its dishes could reach £100.

Mr Ahmed told the BBC: 'The sector's in a spiral effect and it's going down.

Castel Jezeří near Most

Jezeří (German: Eisenberg) is a castle converted into a chateau, located on the slopes of the Krušné Mountains in the Most district of the Ústí nad Labem region. It is located approximately twelve kilometers southwest of the town of Litvínov in the cadastral territory of the settlement of Jezeří, which is a local part of Horní Jiřetín. The chateau stands directly above the ČSA Quarry, less than 500 meters from its edge.

At the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, the mining front of the ČSA open-pit brown coal quarry began to approach the foot of the tectonically disturbed crystalline structure of the Krušné Mountains and later exposed it directly in many places. The original concept of mining development considered the quarry to advance along the slopes of the Krušné Mountains in an eastern direction to the central part of the coal basin and the complete coalification of the seam in the Vysoká Pec – Albrechtice area. As a result of the expansion of brown coal mining in the ČSA Quarry, the Jezeří arboretum was damaged and a number of villages in the landscape below the castle disappeared (Jezeří, Albrechtice, Dřínov, etc.). In the 1980s, demolition of the castle was planned.

Since the 1970s and 1980s, extensive exploration work has been carried out in connection with coal mining, during which a complicated tectonic faulting of the basin edge and the adjacent slope of the Ore Mountains with the Jezeří castle was discovered. The surveys have shown that the castle rests on a block of intact crystalline rock, which in simplified terms represents a wedge, which is separated from the Ore Mountains massif on both sides by significant fault zones. Since there was a concern that if coal was mined in the area under the castle, the stability of the rock block would be disrupted and the castle would be damaged, the mining plans were revised and in 1991 a protective zone for the set of cultural monuments in Jezeří was established, which defined the extent of the protective pillar of unmined coal at the foot of the slope. The first plans for the restoration of the monument began to emerge in 1986, but only the most necessary repairs were carried out.

The Lobkovic family acquired the castle back in restitution in 1991, but due to the high costs necessary for the reconstruction, they donated it to the state in 1996. The castle is cared for by the National Heritage Institute, a regional expert institution in Ústí nad Labem. Gradual reconstruction of the buildings is underway

One of the most important Baroque pilgrimage churches in Germany is the Basilica of the Vierzehnheiligen in Bad Staffelstein, Upper Franconia.

Construction of the church began in 1743, but wasn't completed until 1772.

The planning process until construction could finally begin was confusing and complicated.

The origins of the pilgrimage lie in the Middle Ages: in 1445, the shepherd of the monastery (Langheim Monastery) saw a crying child in a field, which disappeared as he approached. This child appeared to the shepherd three times, and on July 2, 1446, he and a woman witnessed two burning candles descending from heaven at this spot. Shortly thereafter, a miraculous healing occurred at exactly the same spot. The miraculous healing was then recognized by the nearby Langheim Monastery (this monastery no longer exists). A pilgrimage quickly gained momentum, and the first church was built. A pilgrimage brings in revenue, and, as so often happens, a dispute erupts over this revenue. The dispute was between Langheim Monastery and Staffelstein, which was the responsible parish. An arbitration court ruled that the church and the offerings should remain in Langheim, but that a third of the revenue must be paid to the Bishop of Bamberg. In return, the bishop must bear a share of the construction costs, provided he knows the plans and agrees. In other words, no construction can take place without the bishop's consent.

In 1693, the Bishop of Bamberg demanded the third of the pilgrimage revenue he was entitled to from Langheim Monastery. The abbot countered by reminding the bishop that the diocese had long since failed to fulfill its proportional construction obligations, and he presented the bishop with an expert opinion on the necessity of a new building. The dispute fizzled out; the diocese was not expected to pay.

The planning confusion began. The protagonists were the Abbot of Langheim, Stephan Mösinger, and Bishop Friedrich Carl von Schönborn. They now negotiate who will pay what. The bishop succeeds in getting Langheim Abbey to bear the costs alone, but in return the pilgrimage fees are reduced. However, the building plans still have to be signed off by the bishop.

Since his abbey now has to bear the costs, the abbot wants to keep them as low as possible. He commissions the Weimar court architect Gottfried Heinrich Krohne to redesign the church. Krohne, himself a Protestant, has no sympathy for a rural pilgrimage. This is reflected in his plans. The bishop rejects Krohne's plans. The plans for the pilgrimage church are abandoned. The abbot turns to the redesign and construction of the monastery church. He hires Balthasar Neumann for this task. His plans for the new monastery church overshadow all other Baroque church plans. The project is abandoned, and the abbot has to turn his attention back to Vierzehnheiligen. In the meantime, the bishop has commissioned his court architect, Jakob Michael Küchel, to design the pilgrimage church. However, the bishop rejects these plans, deeming them too expensive. At the same time, the abbot commissioned Balthasar Neumann to draw up plans. These plans were approved, but secretly the abbot wanted to forgo the brick vaults for cost reasons. The abbot's master builder Krohne was to begin construction based on Neumann's plans, but as a cost-effective version. On April 23, 1743, the foundation stone was laid, and by December the walls in the choir and transept area were three meters high. Becoming suspicious, the bishop sent Balthasar Neumann and Küchel to Vierzehnheiligen for an inspection. Neumann was shocked; Krohne deviated significantly from Neumann's plans, surely on the abbot's instructions. The bishop blamed Krohne solely, and the abbot dismissed the master builder. Bamberg now took control, and the road was clear for Neumann. And Neumann now showed why he was one of the leading Baroque architects; he was at his best. In 1744, he presented his plans for the new building, incorporating the walls that had already been built. He completely redesigned the building, with the vault being the greatest challenge. Neumann died in 1753 and did not live to see its completion. His master mason, Thomas Nissler, continued the work in Neumann's spirit. The church was consecrated in 1772.

What would Vierzehnheiligen be without its fantastic stucco decorations and frescoes (unfortunately, since a fire caused by lightning in 1835, water damage because the temporary roof was built too late, and whitewashing in the late 19th century, the frescoes have suffered greatly today).

Johann Michael Feichtmayr and his workshop, together with Johann Georg Üblhör, all masters of their craft, were responsible for the magnificent stucco and the freestanding altar of grace. Feichtmayr also designed the high altar.

We managed to get out and about yesterday, been feeling low so it was nice to feel the sun and fresh air. Whenever we are in Steveston we always buy a loaf of bread at Romania Country Bread. The owner built the wood-fired oven himself and is quite a character. All he makes is one type of bread and it costs ten dollars a loaf but it is fabulous. As for Win Win Chicken, haven't tried it yet :)

Ramses III’s magnificent memorial temple of Medinat Habu, fronted by sleepy Kom Lolah village and backed by the Theban mountains, is one of the west bank's most underrated sites. This was one of the first places in Thebes closely associated with the local god Amun. At its height, Medinat Habu contained temples, storage rooms, workshops, administrative buildings, a royal palace and accommodation for priests and officials. It was the centre of the economic life of Thebes for centuries.

Although the complex is most famous for the funerary temple built by Ramses III, Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis III also constructed buildings here. They were later added to and altered by a succession of rulers through to the Ptolemies. When the pagan cults were banned, it became an important Christian centre, and was still inhabited as late as the 9th century AD, when a plague was thought to have decimated the town. You can still see the mud-brick remains of the medieval town that gave the site its name (medina means ‘town’ or ‘city’) on top of the enclosure walls.

The original Temple of Amun, built by Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis III, was later completely overshadowed by the enormous Funerary Temple of Ramses III, the dominant feature of Medinat Habu. But a chapel from the Hatshepsut period still stands on the right after you have passed the outer gates.

Ramses III was inspired in the construction of his shrine by the Ramesseum of his illustrious forebear, Ramses II. His own temple and the smaller one dedicated to Amun are both enclosed within the massive outer walls of the complex.

Also just inside, to the left of the gate, are the Tomb Chapels of the Divine Adorers, which were built for the principal priestesses of Amun. Outside the eastern gate, one of only two entrances, was a landing quay for a canal that once connected Medinat Habu with the Nile.

You enter the site through the unique Syrian Gate, a large two-storey building modelled after a Syrian fortress: as with the images of the pharaoh smiting his enemies, this harks back to the famous battles between Egyptians and Hittites, particularly at the time of Ramses II. If you follow the wall to the left, you will find a staircase leading to the upper floors. There is not much to see in the rooms but you’ll get some great views out across the village in front of the temple and over the fields to the south.

The well-preserved first pylon marks the front of the temple proper. Ramses III is portrayed in its reliefs as the victor in several wars. Most famous are the fine reliefs of his victory over the Libyans (whom you can recognise by their long robes, sidelocks and beards). There is also a gruesome scene of scribes tallying the number of enemies killed by counting severed hands and genitals.

To the left of the first court are the remains of the Pharaoh’s Palace; the three rooms at the rear were for the royal harem. There is a window between the first court and the Pharaoh’s Palace known as the Window of Appearances, which allowed the pharaoh to show himself to his subjects.

The reliefs of the second pylon feature Ramses III presenting prisoners of war to Amun and his vulture-goddess wife, Mut. Colonnades and reliefs surround the second court, depicting various religious ceremonies.

If you have time to wander about the extensive ruins around the funerary temple, you will see the remains of an early Christian basilica as well as a small sacred lake and, on the south side of the temple, the outline of the palace and the window, looking into the temple courtyard, where Ramses would appear.

It is a wonderful place to visit, especially in the late afternoon when the light softens and the creamy stone glows.

Easy way to the top but you miss the beautiful trails in the old woods. The skylight was built in 1867, costs around $17 round trip and travels over 1/2 mile. The elevation gain is 500'. One of the great wonders in the Appalachian Region of eastern Kentucky.

Locking up the shop for the last time:

Thousands of corner shops will be forced to close due to surging energy costs unless the government steps in with emergency support, a trade body has said.

The trade body, which represents 48,000 local shops employing 405,000 staff, said energy bills had surged to an average of £45,000 for smaller members, a figure more than double what store owners had been paying before renewing their contracts in recent months.

Every afternoon, dozens of Lorikeets come to my yard to feast on the fruit I provide for them (it costs a small fortune, they eat a lot of fruit in 5 hours, but I don't mind). Other birds also come, so it's a free-for-all feast, while I dice and slice in the kitchen.

Lorikeets are as noisy as they are colourful, and they have quite a few young who they have this week started bringing to my yard. In the opening sequence, an adult bird sits on my gutter with a juvenile. Watch the interaction between them and see the adult give the juvenile permission to fly to the tree.

There's no earth shattering story here, just 90 seconds of Lorikeet action recorded in my yard yesterday afternoon. I hope you will enjoy my visitors as much as I do.

The Lee's Creek Bridge, Kentucky's oldest, was built by the Kirk family in 1835 as a toll bridge located near their mill on Lee's Creek. In 1928 a teen aged Stockton Bower, of the Bower Bridge Company of Flemmingsburg, rebuilt this bridge. A tornado damaged the bridge in 1966 and steel beams were placed under the bridge for support. In 1968 another tornado blew the roof off. In 2000 the roof, the siding and the flooring were replaced. A record rainstorm and flood filled Lee's Creek with debris the formed a dam under the bridge and twisted the steel beams loose from under the covered bridge. It now sits a bit sideways and was temporarily stabilized from the inside by Arnold M Grafton and Co. Estimated repair costs of a million to a million and a half are needed. Local tourists boards are actively seeking to raise money for restoration.
