On my way to school.

I wish you all a merry Xmas. Thank you for your inspiring works and words.

There are certainly countless motifs that can be used to symbolize the new beginning of a year. A sunrise outside in nature (in this case on the Hoher Schneeberg in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains) is my favorite.

In both cases we are on a path that leads us into a new phase of life. A path that is only known to us to a certain extent and where a big surprise (or challenge) can be waiting for us around the next bend.

Now you could object that a day is just a day and in comparison a year must be much more significant. I would like to show you why I don't quite see it that way.

On the one hand, this assessment is based on our standards, which are based on a human life. If we look at it from the perspective of the lifespan of the universe, a year is just as insignificant as a day (basically the effects of neither are noticeable).

On the other hand, a single day, a single decision is enough to fundamentally change our own world in every conceivable direction.

So what if we didn't wait for a specific date every year to realize where we want to go, but could use every single day of the year to do so?

Our creative possibilities would increase many times over and we would have so much more room for directional corrections. We could learn, try things out and gain experience without having to ask the fundamental question every time.

With this in mind, I wish you all a good start and an exciting and fulfilling journey.

Because today is the first day of the rest of all of our lives.

Buda, actually. Needed quite a bit of perspective correction to raise the tower upright.

Beethoven, Symp. no 3, Eroica

From Wikipedia.

Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Opus 55 (also Italian Sinfonia Eroica, Heroic Symphony) is a structurally rigorous composition of great emotional depth, which marked the beginning of the creative middle-period of the composer Ludwig van Beethoven.[1][2]

Beethoven began composing the third symphony soon after Symphony No. 2 in D major, Opus 36; he completed the composition in early 1804, and the first public performance of Symphony No. 3 was on 7 April 1805 in Vienna.[3]

On display at the Lobkowicz Palace in Prague is a first published edition (1806) of Beethoven's Eroica, as well as other Beethoven treasures including manuscripts of the 4th and 5th symphonies, featuring Beethoven's own corrections and annotations for performance.

As winter in Montreal does not give many occasions for bokeh photography, I was recently playing with possibilities of RaweTherapee, my RAW editor of choice. I made couple of LUT files too mimic a memory of some vintage films my father used in 70-ties.

Here I share some results. Only minimal exposure and LUT profile were applied on those photos.

Brushy Mountain is another Youtube rabbit hole that Niccy and I fell down!

This is the recreation yard at Brushy Mountain. Made me think of the song "Green, Green Grass Of Home". The song has been covered by a lot of artists but I like Sir Tom Jones's version best:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAXkZkGzxWk

Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary, last named Brushy Mountain Correctional Complex, (or, unofficially, Brushy) was a maximum-security prison in the community of Petros in Morgan County, Tennessee, operated by the Tennessee Department of Correction. It was established in 1896 and operated until 2009.

Perhaps the best-known escape attempt occurred on June 10, 1977, when James Earl Ray, the assassin of Martin Luther King Jr., escaped with six other inmates by climbing over a fence. Ray was captured less than 58 hours later in rugged mountain terrain 81⁄2 miles from the prison.

Brushy Mountain was another of our stops on the Tennessee portion of our adventure. Thank you Youtube!

One of the things we found interesting is that the prison was actually built by the inmates using stone mined by prisoners from a quarry on the property. Imagine being forced to build the place that's going to be your punishment. That's some real hard labor and hard time.

Correction Wynd is situated in Aberdeen's city centre.

It was the location of the House of Correction.

The House of Correction served as a half-jail and half-poorhouse.

It operated between 1637 and 1711.

Before transferring to Accra airport for the flight back home, we revisited Aburi Botanical Gardens.

The missing tails indicated how the fairy hairstreak escaped from the predators.

At first, I thought it's the usual large fairy hairstreaks encountered these days, but it turned out to be a new species to me according to the underside marking.

It's not a fresh individual and I only had the underside picture, but probably either Hypolycaena nigra (Black Fairy Hairstreak) or Hypolycaena hatita (Common Fairy Hairstreak).

Based on the discussion of other Hypolycaena photos in Flickr, I would guess it's Hypolycaena nigra, which has a much clearer discal band on the hindwing that is well defined even at the tornal area.

Any suggestion/correction on the ID is much appreciated.
