The contract brush cutter on the New Hampshire Northcoast is just about finished clearing the main line, this combined with some additional efforts by a certain employee have made the Union Meadows causeway look as good this spring as it probably has since construction of the railroad! Up until relatively recent times this causeway had high brush and trees growing on it, making it completely unshootable. With the freshly rebuilt GP38-2 back on the train this week, albeit in the middle of the consist, combined with decent weather it was a good time to shoot the causeway before the brush starts creeping back up. With 2 loads for Rochester and 25 loads for Boston the three units are having no trouble making track speed despite a late start from Ossipee.

A new year, renewing contract. She signed herself into my power. Every letter, every stroke of her pen was a surrender—her breath, her thoughts, her very essence now bound to my will. She is no longer just an amazing capable woman; she is a vessel, a creation of my command, ready to be shaped, molded, and used. It's late evening, almost night. Today I stayed a little longer at work and the last bus left 20 minutes ago. The next one is no longer running. So I have to walk home. The only shortcut leads through the dark forest. What can I do? I walk along the stony path and the crowns of the trees dance to the rhythm of the wind. Another person would think how creepy it is, but I quite like it. It's getting colder, I pull my scarf closer to my neck and add to my stride. In the distance I see a bright light, resembling flames. "God, it's on fire!" As I run in that direction, it feels like forever, as if the flames are moving away from me. I finally managed to catch up, but the flames were suddenly gone. I look around, am I dreaming? Something flashes between the trees. I sharpen my vision and hear the crunching of branches behind me. I turn "who's there?!" I stand still for a while and wait. I'm afraid. I turn towards the road and want to leave when a figure appears from the darkness in front of me. About two meters high. As our faces meet, I finally see his face. He is perfect and beautiful. His golden eyes, like fire, burn through mine. I look away. The silence is broken by his deep, melodious voice "It's too late to walk alone in this forest, miss, don't you know what they say about it?". "I don't know, it seems absolutely normal to me," I answer. He smiles mischievously. "During the day maybe, but at night the darkest creatures awaken, you shouldn't be here unless you want to meet one of them". "I'm sorry sir but I don't have time for conversation I want to go home" I step forward determined to continue on my way but he stands in my way "Who enters this forest will never come out..." he took my a strand of hair and rub them between his fingers. "...but I could help you get out". I sigh "so what should I do?" He smiled with satisfaction "it's easy, just sign this contract" he dropped a lock of my hair and snapped his fingers. A flame shot out of a small spark, which then turned into a paper shred in his hands. Along with this paper, massive golden horns appeared on his head. I look at it in amazement, but I'm slowly starting to realize what is going on here. "Sir, who are you?" "I am someone who can help you. You will not feel pain, your loved ones will not suffer, death will be avoided. You will experience a feeling of happiness. But everything has a price" he replied. "What price will I have to pay?" He looked at me "The tallest".

After missing the first two days of Texans training camp before agreeing to a five-year, $14 million contract Saturday, outside linebacker Brian Cushing is eager to get on the practice field today with his new teammates.
Cushing, the first-round draft choice from Southern California, is getting $10.435 million in guaranteed money to become the starter on the strong side and help improve a defense that ranked 22nd last season, including 23rd against the run.
“I’m just relieved and excited to have this done,” Cushing said. “I’m ready to play football and help the team win.”
Cushing (6-3, 262) was in Los Angeles when agent Tom Condon reached the agreement with general manager Rick Smith and director of football administration Chris Olsen.
Cushing’s contract could be worth a maximum of $18 million over five years.
In the fifth year of his deal, there’s a clause that could earn him an additional $4 million in an escalator bonus.
Odds are that Cushing’s contract will be extended before he enters the fifth season in 2013.
Smith and Olsen will have all eight of their draft choices under contract when the Texans take the field for the third day of two-a-day drills at their Methodist Training Center.
“It’s very important to have him signed,” coach Gary Kubiak said. “Rick and Chris were up at 3 in the morning trying to get it done. They’ve done a good job.
“Brian’s two days behind now, but he didn’t miss anything we did in the offseason program, so that’s a good thing. He wanted to be here while we were working on the contract, but he couldn’t.”
Rookies who have signed with the Texans report a week early for conditioning and meetings before practicing for the first time with the veterans. Cushing wanted to report with the rookies.
He was working out at Reliant Stadium last week when the Texans had to explain league rules that forced him to leave.
Cushing took what turned out to be a quick trip back to Los Angeles. He returned to Houston on Saturday afternoon.
Texans coaches are excited to get him on the practice field.
“We’re going to put the pads on (Sunday morning), and I know he’s chomping at the bit to get out there,” Kubiak said.
After the Texans used the 15th pick in the first round on Cushing, they inserted him into the starting lineup. He impressed his coaches in the organized team activities and minicamp.
“We like his presence on the ball,” Kubiak said, meaning Cushing has a knack for finding the ball and making plays. “He’s playing over the tight end, and we’re going to ask him to do a great deal. We think he can handle it.
“Brian’s very athletic. He’s physical against the run. He can rush the passer. He can drop into coverage. We brought him here for a reason, and we’re going to put him to work real fast.”
Frank Bush, who is in his first season as defensive coordinator, has to make calls that maximize Cushing’s strengths. The faster Cushing learns, the quicker Bush plans to utilize all his talent.
“We’re going to try to take advantage of all his talent,” Bush said. “Because he’s such a talented kid, there are a lot of things we can do with him.”
The coaches say they think Cushing has everything it takes to become a star at his position.
“Brian can turn and run with the tight end,” Bush said. “He’s big and strong enough to strike them at the line of scrimmage and nullify some of their speed down the field, so we’re comfortable with him in coverage.
“His ability also gives us a chance to be aggressive toward the quarterback. He’s a big guy who’s shown he can get there.”

66027 heads 4S35, the 1407 Seaforth – Mossend through the Lune Gorge on 19 July 2018. Introduced earlier this year, DB Cargo are reportedly expecting to pick up more contracts as the year goes on.
The loading on this train apparently varies quite a lot, it would have to be a light load when I went for it!
Finally, I've contracted the infamous virus, something I thought would never happen. Ironically, it occurred just a day after I took this photo of a Grey Currawong. While fighting the bug I've had ample time for research and discovered that the Grey Currawong was initially identified as Corvus versicolor by ornithologist John Latham in 1801, who referred to it as the "variable crow."
Despite their resemblance and behavior similar to crows, currawongs are not closely related to true crows. They are, in fact, more closely related to the Australian Magpie and butcherbirds. Together with the Pied Currawong and Black Currawong , the Grey Currawong forms the genus Strepera.

New contract - Go-Ahead London E264 (SN62DFL) on route 291 to Woodlands Estate at Woolwich on 08/12/2018
In readiness for the introduction of Crossrail (or to give its proper name - the Elizabeth Line), the 291 gained a substantial capacity increase in the form of Alexander Dennis Enviro400s, and Go-Ahead won the contract running the route out of it's Morden Wharf garage in Greenwich.
In sharp contrast to the 9.6m Enviro200s they replaced, these vehicles carry roughly the same number of passengers on the lower deck alone as their predecessors did, so the overcrowding issues on the route should no longer be an issue.

History
Most of the houses date from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It was established as a planned fishing village on the northern edge of the Lochalsh, built ‘when introducing sheep farming in 1814-20 and removing the population from their old hamlets in Glen Garron, founded the villages of Jeantown and Plockton on Loch Carronside’
Some maritime charts including MacKenzie (1776) and Heather (1804) mark the peninsula where the village sits as ‘Plack’, however it generally considered that the village was built on the ‘Ploc’ of Lochalsh, with ‘Ploc’ being understood in Gaelic as pimple or bump (of Lochalsh) sharing this with other places such as the Plock of Kyle and Plocrapool on the Isle of Harris. Its name in current form is based on the Gaelic name referring to the promontory, with the ‘-ton’ (from 'town') added to designate it as such in the English language, following the construction of the planned village around 1800. Over time the name of village changed to its current contracted form ‘Plockton’.
Geography
Situated on a sheltered inlet of Loch Carron, and due to the series of New Zealand cabbage palm trees which have dominated Harbour Street since the 1960s, Plockton has a distinctive ‘sub-tropical appearance’
The Church of Scotland house of worship in the village (also used by the Free Church of Scotland) was designed by Thomas Telford.
Tourism
The village is a tourist resort. The television series Hamish Macbeth, starring Robert Carlyle, was filmed there, substituting for the fictional Lochdubh.
Plockton was also used for various scenes in the film The Wicker Man and the Inspector Alleyn Mysteries television series furthering its reputation.
The mild climate permits cultivation of palm-like cabbage trees
The village has a small general store with a café; a takeaway; a restaurant; newsagent and craft shop; three hotels with pubs; numerous B&Bs; library with free internet access and a village hall, which holds community events and art exhibitions. It is served by Plockton railway station, on the Kyle of Lochalsh Line and the short Plockton Airfield for light aircraft and microlights.
Nearby is Duncraig Castle, a nineteenth-century stately home built by the Matheson family. The castle was derelict for many years, having had a variety of commercial uses.
Plockton has been a popular location for many artists including those from The Edinburgh School (Adam Bruce Thomson, David Macbeth Sutherland) and continues to attract artists.
Lake Wales is a city in Polk County, Florida. The population was 14,225 at the 2010 census. As of 2019, the population estimated by the U.S. Census Bureau is 16,759. It is part of the Lakeland–Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lake Wales is located in central Florida, west of Lake Kissimmee and east of Tampa.
The land around the present city was surveyed in 1879 by Sidney Irving Wailes, who changed the name of a lake, then known as Watts Lake, to Lake Wailes.
The city of Lake Wales was established near the lake in 1911–12, planned by the Lake Wales Land Company. The spelling Wales was used for the city, although the lake is still generally spelled Lake Wailes. Allen Carleton Nydegger, a Civil Engineer, was contracted by the Lake Wales Land Company to plot out the community of Lake Wales. He and his crew camped on the shores of Crystal Lake and spent months plotting out the new community. In 1925 the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad built a new line from Haines City joining lines to Everglades City. A depot was opened on this line at Lake Wales. The City of Lake Wales was officially incorporated in April 1917.
In 2004, Lake Wales endured the effects of three hurricanes which came through the area: Hurricane Charley, Hurricane Frances and Hurricane Jeanne. The three hurricanes brought hurricane-force winds to the Lake Wales area within a space of 44 days. In 2017, Hurricane Irma brought more hurricane-force winds to Lake Wales.
The town lies near the geographical center of the Florida peninsula. Lake Wales is located on the Lake Wales Ridge,[8] a sandy upland area running roughly parallel to both coasts in the center of the peninsula. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.0 square miles (36 km2), of which 13.4 square miles (35 km2) is land and 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2) (4.71%) is water.
Lake Wales is located in the humid subtropical zone of the (Köppen climate classification: Cfa). In 2004, the eyes of Hurricanes Charley, Frances and Jeanne all passed near the town. Virtually all physical damage has been restored.

*Spook Hill, an optical illusion which makes a car in neutral appear as if it is traveling uphill (gravity hill)
*The commercial historic district in the heart of the old town contains important examples of architecture from the period of the Florida land boom of the 1920s. The district's tallest building, the Hotel Grand, has been boarded up for many years but has been purchased and is in the process of being restored.
*The Lake Wales Museum and Cultural Center is a history museum funded by a public-private partnership. It offers exhibits and artifacts from the pre-Columbian era to modern.
*Grove House, the visitor's center for the agricultural cooperative Florida's Natural (located across from the company's processing plant).
*Chalet Suzanne This attraction has closed.

OK, it's been done before. I get that. But it's also a compositional idea that appears simple and one I wanted to try for myself. With today a write-off through rain, I decided to give it a whack.
Two hours later I finally got the shot I envisaged, with the assistance of the kitchen bench, a black shirt, a torch, a tissue to muffle the torchlight, a ring, an old book by Balzac (the source of the title), a wireless remote, tripod, a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III and a Canon EF 85mm f1.2L II lens.
