Residence of Herman Willem Daendels
A great thunder lord and a father of the coolies
The birthplace of Herman Willem Daendels (1762-1818) and the Daendelshuis where he lived with his wife and children. Daendels was a revolutionary by Dutch standards. He joined the patriots, a political movement that wanted to put an end to the rotten regime of Stadholder Willem V. Daendels was therefore a fervent supporter of the French Revolution (1789). After the French invasion of the Netherlands (1795) he made a career in the Dutch army. In 1807 Daendels was appointed governor-general of the Dutch East Indies by Napoleon and he ruled the colony until 1810. A much less well-known colonial administrator from Hattem was Johan François Adriaan Cateau van Rosevelt (1824-1891). He was the eldest son of an impoverished Zeeland family and made it to agent general for Immigration in Suriname and later also a member of parliament. In contrast to Daendels, who was called Toewan Besar Goentoer, the great thunder lord, Cateau van Rosevelt's contract workers in Suriname called “Koelie-papa”, father of the contract workers.
The Daendelshuis on Kerkhofstraat was first occupied by Daendels' in-laws. His wife inherited her parents' house and has lived here with her children since 1811, most of the time without her husband. Daendels went alone to the Indies, where he lived for a while with a Bantam princess, probably the ancestor of the Indies branch of the Daendels family.

A new year, renewing contract. She signed herself into my power. Every letter, every stroke of her pen was a surrender—her breath, her thoughts, her very essence now bound to my will. She is no longer just an amazing capable woman; she is a vessel, a creation of my command, ready to be shaped, molded, and used. Her soul dances to my rhythm, and in her submission, I find my absolute control. She belongs to me —completely, utterly, and without question.

The IEI Barge coal contract was a coal contract that ran for many years from the west-side of Iowa to the east-side and to East Dubuque. These trains has seen the variation of power combinations over the years. Back in 1998 the IC still had geeps along for the ride with the run thru BNSF power. They were mainly needed for the ATS west of Waterloo. The trio of BNSF units has one of the ex-natural gas painted unit 2nd out. Here the train rolls thru Jesup east of Waterloo. This contract ended in 2016, and no coal trains roam Iowa for CN. Scanned Slide from September 1998.
Running uphill in loose stone whilst falling victim to what seems to be a never ending rainfall. Not what I had in mind for my Saturday morning hike. But we found the bridge and our timing couldn't have been better, or worse, let's just say we made it happen!

The loading on this train apparently varies quite a lot, it would have to be a light load when I went for it!
Make sure to read the fine print...never know what you might be signing away. *does best evil laugh impression*
Hope you like!!

Deserted Spirits - Bodie Church in the Snow, Bodie, CA, USA - Copyright Martyn Phillips, M4Photo
As we headed over the washboard road from the highway, over the Bodie Hills and into Bodie itself, the snow began to fall and really set the scene for our visit to this long since deserted town. As we headed over the hills and got our first look at the town, it was the church that caught my eye and the first building that I headed to. I just loved the contract between the wet wood of the building and the snow, especially the bell tower reaching high above the town.
The church was eerily quiet and the bell as still as a newly formed icicle. However, with the town left as it was when the people left in a hurry, you can appreciate the spirits that must still call the town and the church home.
This one is more of a memory photograph for me, but also one that will appeal to those people that like images of churches, well it is a little different after all.
Hot Springs (Lakota: mni kȟáta;[7] "hot water") is a city in and the county seat of Fall River County, South Dakota, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 3,711. In addition, neighboring Oglala Lakota County contracts the duties of Auditor, Treasurer and Register of Deeds to the Fall River County authority in Hot Springs. Hot Springs is located at 43°26′N 103°29′W, in Fall River County at the southern edge of South Dakota's Black Hills. The Fall River runs through the city. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.61 square miles (9.35 km2), all of it land. Hot Springs has been assigned the ZIP code 57747 and the FIPS place code 30220. The Sioux and Cheyenne people had long frequented the area, appreciating its warm springs. According to several accounts, including a ledger art piece by the Oglala Lakota artist Amos Bad Heart Bull, Native Americans considered the springs sacred. European settlers arrived in the second half of the 19th century. They first named the city "Minnekahta" after its Lakota name. It was renamed Hot Springs in 1882, which is a translation of the Native American name. A variety of health resorts were built on the tourism offered by the springs.

I was really thankful today. Even though with the rain, I didn't really get that wet. I seemed to miss the worst of it between driving and having lunch. Always things to be thankful for. ❤ I only did two jobs today but one of them was my friend/customer Gary's english laurel hedge. I was pretty happy with it over all though it does have a few wholes that it needs to fill in. I hope everyone is having a great day today. 😃

OK, it's been done before. I get that. But it's also a compositional idea that appears simple and one I wanted to try for myself. With today a write-off through rain, I decided to give it a whack.
Two hours later I finally got the shot I envisaged, with the assistance of the kitchen bench, a black shirt, a torch, a tissue to muffle the torchlight, a ring, an old book by Balzac (the source of the title), a wireless remote, tripod, a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III and a Canon EF 85mm f1.2L II lens.
