Most people mistake professional business consultancy as a troubleshooting exercise that a company undertakes to manage crisis. Even the business owners, especially the small and relatively inexperienced ones, have similar notions and avail of their services only in cases where management looses control. However, services offered by professional consultants need not be bound by such limitations. Business consultants, in fact, are third party experts who influence how businesses, as well as governments and institutions make decisions.

Irish pubs feature prominently in James Joyce's "Ulysses", and it is true that wherever the Irish have gone in the world they have set up places of conviviality. The Irish impact on the colony of Van Diemen's Land came initially with the arrival of the convicts. Many of the Irish convicts were in fact political prisoners, and almost all of them were Catholics.

This Irish pub, which is now known as "The Irish" with the slogan "Drinking Consultants", was founded in 1835 as "The Hibernian" by freed convict Josiah Pitcher. Of course the current building, with its Art Deco influences, dates from around 100 years after that.

The Hong Kong Port connects to the HZMB from a site with approximately 130 hectares of reclaimed land. The port’s Passenger Clearance Building (PCB) is iconic, with aesthetically striking architecture. Its long span curved roof mimics the surrounding sea and offers unobstructed views. Its skylights filter natural light to minimize power usage for the whole building. Tree-like columns support the roof and provide an airy feel inside.

Given the project’s proximity to the airport, our team had to overcome airport height restrictions and limited space onsite, together with the mandate to complete the PCB in 30 months whilst the whole Port was to be completed in about four years. The design and construction of the PCB roof were the most notable innovations to meet these challenges.

Its key features include:

•The integration of BIM and 3D scanning. In 2014, the use of digitalization in civil engineering was still in its infancy in Hong Kong. By overlaying the complex roof design and as erected models, any out of tolerance areas could be readily identified and rectified.

•Pre-fabrication of a total of 81 roof segments, with all necessary fittings and building services including pre-installed MEP completed offsite, form the roof that stretches to the size of nine FIFA football pitches. The largest segment measures 61 meters x 25 meters and weighs 680 tons and remains the largest and heaviest spatial structural frame for a building as of 2022.

•First ever use of installation by vertical lifting and then horizontal jacking of this scale in Hong Kong. This not only overcame the space and height limitations but also allowed parallel construction of the concrete works below to accelerate project time. On-site safety was also enhanced by the subsequent reduction in the need for working at height.

Since then, innovative construction methods, including Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) and MiMEP, inspired by Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) have become important elements in Hong Kong’s construction industry.

Sustainable features at the Port such as the District Cooling System, and the use of treated effluent from the onsite tertiary sewage treatment plant for toilet flushing helped earn the project two platinum and one gold BEAM Plus awards.

The port also contains other associated infrastructure and auxiliary facilities, such as:

•Cargo clearance facilities

•Road network

•Transit interchange

•Traffic control surveillance system

•Accommodations for frontline departments such as Immigration and Customs and Excise

Awards and Recognition:

•HKIE Grand Award 2023 – Grand Prize (Infrastructure Category)

•Hong Kong Green Building Council BEAM Plus Award 2020 – Platinum

•The Lighthouse Club Safety Leadership Awards 2016 – Gold (Architect-Consultant Category)

Caputh was first mentioned in a document in 1317. Compared to the development of neighbouring villages, it is therefore conceivable that a sacred building was also erected in Caputh in the 14th century. However, there are no confirmed findings on this so far. What is certain is that in 1820 there was a building that had become dilapidated. As the number of inhabitants grew, the parish supported a new building, which was erected between 1850 and 1852 according to a design by Friedrich August Stüler, Architecture Consultant of King Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia. The church furnishings are uniformly from the construction period and were influenced by the king. The baptismal font from around 1840 was made of porcelain in the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur in Berlin according to a design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Two neo-Classical chandeliers with rope wheel suspension belong to the further equipment.

Like many cats, Elsie keeps a mental list of Very Interesting Places that need to be explored. My closet is one of those places.

Today, I indulged Elsie by lifting her to the top of a storage box inside the closte, giving her a cat's eye view of the rest of the room.

My dad did small-time import-export business on clothes and Oriental souvenirs for many years, but certainly not significant to require meeting an international trade consultant from the New York State Department of Commerce. so perhaps Mr. Chmieloski is also a stamp collector?

xxxxx

So how did I come across my late father's contacts' business card folio today? Our old but trusty Maytag washing machine broke the other day. The problem is relatively simple to repair (still costly though) so we are determined to get it fixed. In order to clear out some space for the repairman to do his job, I had to move some boxes around, and in doing so came across my dad's business card folio.

My father collected stamps, coins and many other things, so his contacts and associates are from many walks of life and many different countries.

THE BIRTH OF TEIGNMOUTH PIER.

The Pier at Teignmouth was built in 1865 by an engineering consultant from London, called Joseph Wilson.

As a boy, Joseph William Wilson yearned to be an engineer, much to his fathers disapproval, he’d always hoped that he would follow the family tradition and take up a clerical post. After his sons initial schooling as a cleric, Joseph’s’ father was eventually persuaded to send him, as an apprentice, to work under his cousins tutelage in Fox and Henderson, an engineering firm. Later on in his career he acted as an assistant engineer for the firm, on the construction of Crystal Palace, London. He had an inventive mind, and introduced many improvements to the machinery used on the construction. When he left there, he set up in partnership with his brother-in-law and opened The Oldbury Engineering Works. Then, due to ill health, he left Oldbury and set up as a Consulting Engineer in Banbury, where he and his son carried out the construction of Teignmouth Pier. Joseph Wilson died in 1898.

CONSTRUCTION

The Pier is constructed of cast-iron screw piles, these are literally screwed into the sand with a large hexagon on the pile. They are screwed down to the clay level or infact until refusal. Any new steel piling has been driven 80ft right to bedrock. The deck is open and made up of wood from the Yellow Balou, a hard wood from Borneo. The deck was only recently renewed and will last for another 25 years, withstanding the continuous assault from the sea.

A total of 89 piers were built in England & Wales between 1814 and 1910. Only 50 of the original piers are still standing, however, some of those no longer function as a pier. They are forgotten structures pointing out to sea, reminders of another era. Those of us who like to be reminded of days gone by, can still take a stroll out on the few remaining, safe and attractive piers.

Although Teignmouth Pier has undergone many changes in its history, it is one of only two piers left on the South West coast of England, and that is something, Teignmouth, Devon and the English Heritage should be proud of.

VICTORIANS.

Teignmouth became a popular seaside destination in 1817, when the Victorians frequented coastal resorts in favour of the “big smoke” cities they lived and worked in. Doctors used to prescribe a get away for their ails and some even advised their patients to drink the sea water! It was believed to have healing properties.

Initially, Teignmouth Pier was a landing stage. It’s purpose was to enable steam boat passengers to get to the shore. The Victorians used to enjoy their stroll along the promenade, but for some the pull of the sea was too much, so they would walk out to the end of the Pier and look at the view. They could imagine being on board a ship, with the added advantage of a stable footing. But as the jetty was used more and more frequently for promenading, the need for entertainment did not go un-noticed. Some entrepreneurs saw the potential of a captive audience and decided to build on the jetty, giving refreshments and other amusements. For instance the old machine “what the Butler saw” was one of the first to be installed on the Pier.

During the 2nd World War, a 60 foot section of deck was removed so that the Germans could not breach us if they invaded England. Nearly all the piers on the East and South coasts were dealt with in the same way.

Compensation was paid out for replacement of that section but many remained in that state for a considerable period. Our own wasn’t brought to its original width until the early 1960’s.

Another business attire entry. Spring 2007, taken at the Clift Hotel in SF.

Several years ago local activists with two UNICEF consultant and embassy staff created an acrobatic school. The school recruits from street children and now has 125 children of various ages. As well as the acrobatic arts the school also teaches the children to read and write and craft skills that support the performances.

The school has been extraordinarily successful and has worked with Circus Universalis and Cirque de Soleil. International talent from these circuses and more such as Archaos have come to teach.

I was stunned by the quality of the children’s performance, it is simply the best small project that I have yet seen supported by UNICEF. It was impossible to capture the power of the performance in pictures; but I will be back to have another go but the best is to see the performance. The school does full rehearsals every Saturday. Poignantly the school is in the grounds of the ‘Stadium of the 28th September’ scene of last years massacres. The school makes tours of the interior of the country with shows that raise awareness on social and societal issues.

If you cannot make it to Conakry the school regularly does tours of the USA and France. I met with kids who had just returned from touring the US they were teaching the next generation. An unimaginable accomplishment for children who had until a few years ago had been sleeping rough in the port of Conakry. The next tour will be in April in France where they will be at the festival of Angouleme in April.

The next step is to create a sister school; a percussion academy in the same site.
