Abandoned house in Belgium from our trip this weekend. I'd already shot this room and was happy with the shot, but then the sun came out and this glorious light beam shot down from the ceiling, me James and Sam ran round the room kicking up the dust and soon it was full of them. One of those beautifully, surreal moments and totally breathtaking.

réfugiés le long du fleuve oubangui

The exhibition Recaptioning Congo at FOMU presents images from Congo’s long and turbulent history as a colonised country, spanning nearly 100 years from its formal establishment in 1882 to independence in 1960. The exhibition shows the contrasting perspectives of African and European photographers. The exhibition is very revealing and at times shocking… FOMU, Antwerp, Belgium

This is the quintessential view of the Congolese interior in my mind.

The Guinea turaco (Tauraco persa), also known as the green turaco, is a species of turaco, a group of near-passerines birds. It is found in forests of West and Central Africa, ranging from Senegal east to DR Congo and south to northern Angola. It lays two eggs in a tree platform nest.

The Guinea turaco, often inconspicuous in the treetops, is approximately 43 cm long, including a long tail. The plumage is largely green and the tail and wings are dark purplish, except for the crimson primary feathers that are very distinct in flight. In the westernmost subspecies buffoni, which sometimes is known as the Buffon's turaco, there is a white line above and in front of the eye and a black line below the eye. In the nominate subspecies (T. persa persa) of the central part of its range and zenkeri of the southeastern part there also is a second white line below the black line. Unlike similar turacos with red bills, even adult Guinea turacos lack a white rear edge to the crest.

This species is a common in climax forest with plentiful tall trees. It feeds on fruit and blossoms.

Congo is one of the many sets of dances, songs and folk expressions by slaves brought to Brazil in the Colonial Period. Particularmanete is characterized by the use of drums in different sizes, typical costumes and choreography and songs that invoke the Gods. Currently it is a manifestation folk / religious, where pay homage to St. Benedict and Our Lady of Penha in festivals that take place throughout the months of December and January. So many people have asked the story behind this photo and interpreted the expression and demeanor of this man in their own way, that I'd be remiss to share too much.

All I will say about this photo is that this man is one of the most interesting I met in rural east Congo (South Kivu). Even when he wasn't speaking, his face told many stories.

I'm taking a risk with this image because it was shot for a client (along with a bunch of others), so it is copyrighted, at least for now. His top quote for the story: "I murdered people, raped women, and I enjoyed it."

In the southern corner of Armstrong Park is Congo Square, an open space where the enslaved and free people of color gathered throughout the 19th century for meetings, open markets, and the African dance and drumming celebrations that played a substantial role in the development of jazz. Local voodoo practitioners still consider Congo Square a spiritual base and gather at the Square for rituals.
