Congo African Grey has always mesmerised me with it's behaviour and beautiful sounds like whistles and trills. As it is one of the smartest and a very intelligent bird, it is the most captured and illegally trafficked parrot. They have a long lifespan in the wild of about 60 plus years. Their brain power matches a human child aged four to six. They do not just copy sounds; they can learn what words mean and name colours or shapes. An African grey named Alex, studied by scientist Irene Pepperberg, learned to count and identify over 80 objects. Abandoned house in Belgium from our trip this weekend. I'd already shot this room and was happy with the shot, but then the sun came out and this glorious light beam shot down from the ceiling, me James and Sam ran round the room kicking up the dust and soon it was full of them. One of those beautifully, surreal moments and totally breathtaking.

After a failed Congo DRC entrance and 11 days stuck on noman's land inbetween the borders without any water or food, sick and drained. It was then time to collect yourself together really hard and the right time to plot a way more creative way around DRC to Congo Republic via Cabinda that no Congolese border official could think of stopping us since we now simply bypassed them. Despite the massive setbacks on health and hassles, we really needed to continue our Trans-Africa overland route with my wife. It was the only option at this moment, desperate and stupidly dangerous undertaking though, almost drowned our bike and took our very last drops of energy to be on the safe grounds again.

So many people have asked the story behind this photo and interpreted the expression and demeanor of this man in their own way, that I'd be remiss to share too much.
All I will say about this photo is that this man is one of the most interesting I met in rural east Congo (South Kivu). Even when he wasn't speaking, his face told many stories.

I'm taking a risk with this image because it was shot for a client (along with a bunch of others), so it is copyrighted, at least for now. His top quote for the story: "I murdered people, raped women, and I enjoyed it."
