Windows, Microsoft, 1985
“The first version of the Windows operating system resulted from a contract between IBM and Microsoft to develop a graphical user interface (GUI) for the IBM PC. When the collaboration ended, IBM pursued its own OS/2 environment and Windows became Microsoft’s premiere product. Although initial versions were rudimentary and included few applications, Version 3.0 could address memory beyond 641K and featured a more sophisticated user interface. Following its release in 1990, software vendors quickly developed a large array of applications for Windows.”
