The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (abbreviated CPI(M) or CPM) is a political party in India. It has a strong presence in the states of Kerala, West Bengal and Tripura.

In 2011 assembly elections,the CPI(M) led coalitions lost the assembly elections in Kerala and West Bengal. In West Bengal, CPI(M) alliance with 62 seats suffered a setback after 34 years of continuous rule, losing to Trinamool Congress alliance's 226 seats.

There is a criticism that the reason why Left Front got defeated in West Bengal is, among other things, the present state leaders deviated from communist policies and principles.

For more than three decades the Communists clung onto power in West Bengal; the feat was achieved through skillful propaganda, artful deception and through brute force against any opposition. But after Mamata Banerjee kicked them out of Writers Building, there was a pall of gloom at Alimuddin Street. Leaders like Biman Bose who regularly thundered from this chair, were nowhere to be found.

Today this is the reality of the left parties be it the CPI(M), CPI, RSP or FB - they lack able leaders, clear ideology and concrete votebank; without these ingredients its perhaps time to bid them a farewell.

Communist Party of India is fairly popular in the state of Kerala. Practically speaking they are more socialist than communists. The folks we spoke with are quite proud of the secular nature of Keralan society, their high level of health, education achievements.
