Common Juniper · Jeneverbes (Juniperus communis)
Was told this is the largest specimen in Western Europe...
Old tree with branches that have fallen down, forming a "dome" one walks into.
Stitch of 12 photos, stiched with Microsoft ICE.
A juniper bush in a near-desert of volcanic sands and lava in W-Iceland. The common juniper is a small coniferous tree or shrub in the cypress family. It has the largest geographical range of any woody plant, with a circumpolar distribution throughout the Northern Hemisphere, from the Arctic to temperate zones. It can reach up to 10 m height, but in Iceland it hardly grows over 1 m high, and is most usually sprawling on the ground, like here. In Iceland it was used for tea, and for Christmas trees, and the berries were thought to be a cure for various diseases.
This photo is part of a series from a canoe trip with my son in Algonquin Park in 2004.
I'm sorting through old photos and posting some interesting ones. This image was uploaded to Flickr on Jan. 8, 2020.

BOROVICA ® Juniperus communis L.
Drugi nazivi: kleka, plava kleka, venja, smreka, smrika, smrča, smrkva, brinje.

The small shrub or tree can be found in the entire holarctic region. Depending on its location and environment, it can have different shapes (tree or low growing shrub).
Prefers dry, stony or sandy grounds.
The dark blue berries are used dried as spice. Or as a basis or flavoring for alcoholic beverages. (Try the Slovak Borovička.)
The wood has a pleasant scent due to the essential oils it contains. As the tree grows very slow, its wood is dense and hard. Hence its wood is often used for tools in Nordic areas.
The berries, cones, and even the wood is applied in herbal medicine.

Common juniper (at front and back center) is found mostly on the west facing slopes of Burke Park, along with Rocky Mountain and creeping juniper (Rocky Mountain juniper, Juniperus scopulorum, sits to the back and left in this scene). This site sits at the high point towards the south end of Burke Park, Bozeman, Montana.
