The 10th Street Market, built in 1917 and added to in the 1920's and 1940, is an early local example of the public market building type, which became popular in Oakland and elsewhere in California cities in the early 20th century. The original building, and its additions, typify the themes and design features of a type of retail food merchandizing characterized by individual vendor’s stalls, an emphasis on cleanliness, natural light, reasonable prices, safety for women shoppers, and a convenient downtown location. The 10th Street Market meets National Register Criterion C in that it embodies the distinctive characteristics of a public market building, and is a rare surviving local example of the type.
