From the Doors Open description: "In 1927 The Canadian Bank of Commerce began plans for the construction of a new building, having outgrown its seven-storey building. The Commerce decided to erect a head office that would surpass any building of its kind in Canada in height. It was the first of a new generation of skyscrapers and the 34-story tower remained the tallest building in the Commonwealth until 1962. The architects were Darling & Pearson, who designed many of the bank's most distinguished buildings across Canada. Consulting architects were York & Sawyer of New York, who designed office towers in the United States combining a traditional historical style with modern techniques. The building was completed in December 1930 and was officially opened when the Board of Directors held their first meeting in the building on January 13, 1931. Today it is one of the best-loved heritage buildings in the city."
