October 15, 2012 - "Using Transnational Commercial Contracts to Regulate Business" - PPR Fellow Fabrizio Cafaggi gave a Penn Program on Regulation Seminar on how transnational contracts can regulate international commerce. Cafaggi presented the contents of his recent paper regarding his research into transnational contracts and their impact upon business practices. Cafaggi found that transnational contracts typically incorporate measures to attempt to comply with measures set out by regulatory organizations like the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development whose own provisions cannot necessarily be enforced on their own, but through cooperation with larger corporations, may be enforced as contractual obligations between businesses. Cafaggi's upcoming book, entitled "Enforcement of Transnational Private Regulation". Cafaggi's work in transnational regulation is part of a larger body of work researching the subject hosted by the European University Institute and funded by the Hague Institute for the Internationalisation of Law (HiiL). Commentators in the seminar included Penn Law Professor Charles W. Mooney; Wharton Professor of Legal Studies and Business Ethics, David Zaring; and Associate Dean for International Affairs at Penn Law, Dr. Amy Gadsden.

Historic Ferguson Hall on the campus of Texas A&M University–Commerce in Hunt County, Texas. It was constructed 1924-25 as the Education Building and originally had an auditorium, classrooms, administrative offices and a gym. It is the oldest building on campus.

Texas A&M University–Commerce began as the East Texas Normal College in 1889 in Cooper, Texas as a private teachers' college. The school relocated to Commerce in 1894. The State of Texas acquired the school in 1917 and it became East Texas State Normal College. The name of the school changed numerous times (East Texas State Teachers College in 1923, East Texas State College in 1957 and East Texas State University in 1965) until it became part of the Texas A&M University System as Texas A&M University–Commerce in 1996.

A tug pushes a single, empty barge down the North Branch of the Chicago River toward Wolf Point, seen from the Kinzie Street Dave Mathews Memorial Bridge.

I've sometimes gotten into debates with people over my belief that the transbasin diversion that reverses the flow of the river into the Mississippi basin should be closed. Those with whom I disagree always talk about the economic impact, and all the commerce that would be lost were the river not available for barge transport. I could cite figures, of course, but for the moment I look to these pictures. I compare this busy day on the Chicago River with those photos a week or so ago of the barges locking through Markland Dam on the actually busy Ohio.

One of the exhibits for Nuit Blanche 2008. But I thought the reflections in the fountain were much more interesting than the art installation.
