Temples in India play a role in life unlike religious infrastructure here in the west. Temples are a living, breathing organism - with people coming not only to worship but to sell food, sell crafts, sell trinkets, sleep, eat, and beg. It's kind of a trip to see these temples full of merchants screaming for your attention and your money. I can imagine that such endeavors would be most unwelcome in American churches. Pictured here are some merchants selling flower garlands for the worshippers.
