Our first dip into the frigid zone this year, temps -15F/-26C as I type this. Unusual only in that we haven't experienced it to date. As a certified old fogie, I can lean back in my rocker, adjust my comforter, puff on my pipe, gaze skyward and rightfully recollect the winter of ought '13 in which it was -30F just about every day...a truth which about had this northwoodsman ready to seriously investigate other venues of habitation. This seems more than tolerable by comparison, but still very cold and one quickly gets spoiled with the more moderate El Niño numbers of this year. At least the sun is out -- as always on winter's coldest days.

She spends much of her day sleeping now, lying on the comforter with an old throw pillow, raising her head at any commotion, but rarely rising to see. Lying outside when the day cools is another pleasure, watching her world go by. What a wonderful companion she has been. 💔
When to go out, my nurse doth wrap
Me in my comforter and cap;
The cold wind burns my face, and blows
It's frosty pepper up my nose.
Black are my steps on silver sod;
Thick blows my frosty breath abroad;
And tree and house, and hill and lake,
Are frosted like a wedding cake.)))))
Although this fellow looks cold, the image was taken on a warm summer morning in the local wetlands.
Today is both raining AND a Monday - Pasta has the right idea. Our Laundry Monster at work has claimed this comforter as her own.
Late Sunday afternoon and Eva is spent.
Actually truth be told it's me who is spent as I just finished a weekend doing photography for the Speed Skate Canada at the Canadian Youth Short Track (West) championships in Saskatoon. I think I took over 10,000 photos in the past 3 days and now have a lot of sorting, selecting and processing to do. It was super fun doing the photography, but definitely left me spent. My son was skating in the meet and did well at such a big meet.
This is just a simple shot of her laying down on the white comforter of the king size bed. Taken with the 24-70 at f2.8 for that shallow DOF. I'm a big fan of how much scruff shows on the right of the frame and how long that ear stretches on the left side of the frame.
Neither of my two cats particularly like being under covers, which I like because I don't accidentally sit on them. Tikki loves snuggling in rumpled blankets though. I made a few tries at 'tucking her in" when she was napping on bedclothes, with different degrees of her approval. Happy Caturday 6 March 2021, "Cushions, blanket and cover" (with emphasis on the 'cover' part.)
Rena loves the flapping of clean sheets and comforters and gets so excited I have to stop and let her calm down.
Two weeks since we saw Lion and had given up hope but simply could not stop looking because of Beau's sad demeanor....my sister suggested maybe Lion got packed away with the Christmas decorations and could be in the loft.. Jonathan and I didn't have an ounce of energy left and are still in pain after small but painful injuries incurred when searching for Lion during the last few days. I asked my son Ivan who came down and went into the loft but no Lion there.. He looked in the wheelie bin ( the only place we hadn't looked apart from the loft...not there. He went back out to the conservatory (which is very small ) and looked under the sofa and both chairs..not there..pulled out a sofa to see if Lion was behind it and.........Lion dropped down to the floor and Beau had Lion back at last..phew. Much rejoicing of an almost 11 year old dog being reunited with an even older raggy lion..bought second hand for its raggy softness and rubbed all over Beau who was straight from the whelping pen. He still had raggy Teddy..same history but has been taught to fetch Teddy and Lion separately and was still searching disconsolately every day for Lion.. Not quite the same as a Lion lying down a lamb. Just our Beau laying down with Teddy and Lion.. Have to tell him to bring both again now ..Sue :)
I took this photo of Mack napping almost exactly 5 years ago. I'm posting it today for several reasons. I'm missing Mack (and Pippi) and I love how much Mack loves this comforter my mom sent me/us.
Five years ago, I visited my parents at the end of February before we really appreciated what this virus in China would come to mean for the whole world. But I loved one of my mom's comforters so she ordered me one online to be delivered to my home in New Jersey. Turns out that Mack has never loved a material possession more. He stretches on it, kneads on it, loves to sleep on it and pounce on it. He truly loves this comforter.
So today, five years later, I'm posting this sleeping photo in honor of Mack and of my mom.

Saint Barbara's Day is celebrated as Barbaroba on December 17 (which is December 4 in the old style calendar).
Saint Barbara in the Eastern Orthodox Church as the Great Martyr Barbara, was an early Christian Lebanese and Greek saint and martyr. Accounts place her in the 3rd century in Heliopolis Phoenicia, present-day Baalbek, Lebanon, and recent discovered texts in the Saida early church archives suggest her maternal grandmother is a descendant from Miye ou Miye village. There is no reference to her in the authentic early Christian writings nor in the original recension of Saint Jerome's martyrology.
Saint Barbara of Iliopol is revered as a protector from sudden death and a comforter at the last hour. She is depicted in one of the most famous paintings in the world - "The Sistine Madonna" - a painting by the Italian painter Raphael Santi, commissioned by Pope Julius II for the church of the monastery of San Sisto in Piacenza, in which the remains of St. Sixtus and St. Barbara of Heliopol are venerated.
I can't believe I didn't use this one as my 365 a while back. I really like it.
Sorry for the load of photos all of a sudden. I'm bored and have nothing better to do than edit.
I've neglected my yahoo messenger for a while and have almost 300 unread emails *sigh*
Sorry for the long, long absence. I'll skip all the boring details and just tell you that I feel healthy and I am returned from a fun vacation visiting my family in California.
This comforter, given to me by my mom last winter, became Mack's very favorite thing in the world. He adores this comforter and is one of the things that I'll always remember about the pandemic year - me spending more time working from home and watching Mack nap on this comforter right next to me.
Happy Caturday: Catphabet possessions
I know you've seen Mack and the fluffy comforter my parents sent me in March but when I read that the theme for Happy Caturday was "possessions" the first thing I thought of was Mack and this comforter. He LOVED it. And for the weeks I stayed home from work at the onset of the pandemic "lockdown" he was always right there by me enjoying this new fluffy surface. So I want to thank my mom, not only for the comforter, but the calming, heartwarming time it gave me with Mack.
For those of you who pop on to Carnegie's FB page, you saw this photo yesterday. Sorry about the repeat.
Happy Caturday: Possessions
Sitting out on the back deck with a down comforter on enjoying my morning coffee and a smoke, I watched as the birds happily surrounded the feeder to eat sunflower seeds on this frosty morning. I decided to grab my camera and see if I could get any shots of them on the wing. It's not an easy task, but I managed a couple.

Mack was 5 years old before he ever sat on my lap. He was very social and enjoyed sitting next to me but he could never quite work up the nerve to sit on my lap. It has only been the last couple of winters that once the down comforter comes out, he'll sprawl on my chest at night while I try to read. His front paws are just under my chin. I had to hold the phone above and slightly behind my head to get this photo. He loves this down comforter and likes lying on me if I'm under it. So this is one of Mack's reaction to the weather.
Happy Caturday: Weather
When I look back on these weeks of staying home from work during the pandemic, this might be the first scene that comes to mind. Everything outside is blooming and looks beautiful but I spend most of my day inside and this is the sight I see. Mack sleeping on HIS new comforter next to a LOVE pillow that a friend from work made for me several years ago.
Axle loves my new comforter set!
Sorry I haven't been online much. I was busy this weekend and today I left work early feeling sick.
My parents sent us this wonderful lightweight comforter that we ALL love. I have it on the bed in the computer room where I've been hanging out for the last week and a half so Jimmy is there too, of course. Mack, who usually hangs out in the bedroom on a cat tree in front of the window, has now started hanging out in the computer room too because he LOVES, LOVES, LOVES this comforter! He rolls around on it, pounces on it, attacks it and sleeps on it. Jimmy and Mack have never spent so much of their day this close to each other. We are all adjusting to this constant togetherness.
BTW, notice the painting on the wall. It's the one done by our family friend Sandy (Gracie's mom) based on a picture of me taken by my mom (Bennilover).

Pasta loves warm laundry coming out of the dryer so it's always a challenge to get towels and blankets folded before she sits and sheds her black fur on them. A couple months ago, someone was too slow, or got sidetracked, and Pasta curled up on a huge, puffy comforter and looked so completely content and cute that we left it on the counter for her. And now, half our highly valuable and much needed counter space is taken up by Pasta's bed.
Happy Caturday: Nap time
(I have to dash off to work so I will comment on other people's Happy Caturday posts this evening.)
For the ones that have followed my photography for any length of time, you know these beauties are my favorite birds!
There is a story behind them that is very personal to me, and I shall share some of it with you now.
In Sept. of 2021 I feel very ill with Covid and came just a day or so from passing away. If I had not admitted myself to the hospital when I did, I would not be here writing this message!
Anyway, during my recovery when I got home from the hospital, I would sit out on my patio and watch the beautiful little hummers fly around me feeding on the various nectar feeders I had place out in various areas of my yard.
They were a tremendous comfort to me and very much aided in my recovery.
They are amazing birds, and I personally think they sense certain things about us that we may not fully know.
Anyway, I felt like sharing my story about my favorite birds. They were there when I needed them most!
The title of my image is such because this is a beautiful Anna's hummingbird.
Mack and I have never spent so much time together. Of my three cats, Mack is the most independent. He likes being outside more than do Jimmy and Ella and when he's inside he has his favorite napping spots that have nothing to do with where I am. All that changed when my parents sent me this new comforter - and of course when I stopped going to work because of this pandemic. For the past month Mack and I are never more than two feet apart from each other given that he's on the comforter on the bed right next to the computer I'm sitting at. I love looking up from the monitor and seeing Mack so thoroughly enjoying OUR new comforter!
