Former Federal Cold Storage Company warehouse (1930-1931), undergoing demolition in 2022. I have one or two thoughts about cold-storage architecture, which I'll get out into the world someday, but anyone curious about the big cold-storage boom of the early 20th century, and its entanglements with larger questions of architectural design and political economy, should check out Michael Osman's fantastic "Preserved Assets," in Governing By Design, edited by the Aggregate group.
Seen here: view into the ongoing demolition, with hydraulic excavator and steam shovel. The huge chunks of concrete hanging from crazy webs of rebar gives the impression of an avalanche caught in a snapshot, but thankfully for the workers onsite, that stuff wasn't going anywhere. Note mushroom columns, and neighboring buildings nestled up against the blank wall.
