Fond of coarse ungraced grasslands, lush meadows and roadside verges where they will feed on grass and other vegetation including small insects. Although not often seen and hidden the male will sometimes sit on top of brambles and other vegetation where you can often hear his loud song. This song is produced by the male rubbing his leathery front wings together which is called ''stridulation'' which is used to attract the females. Can be seen from May to late October.

The whinchat (Saxicola rubetra) is a small migratory passerine bird breeding in Europe and western Asia and wintering in central Africa. At one time considered to be in the thrush family, Turdidae, it is now placed in the Old World flycatcher family, Muscicapidae. Both sexes have a strong supercilium, brownish upper parts mottled darker, a pale throat and breast, a pale buff to whitish belly, and a blackish tail with white bases to the outer tail feathers, but in the breeding season, the male has an orange-buff throat and breast.

The whinchat is a solitary species, favouring open grassy country with rough vegetation and scattered small shrubs. It perches in elevated locations ready to pounce on the insects and other small invertebrates that form its diet. The nest is built by the female on the ground in coarse vegetation, with a clutch of four to seven eggs being laid. The hen incubates the eggs for about thirteen days and then both parents feed the nestlings. Fledging takes place about eighteen days after hatching and the parents continue to feed the young for another fortnight. Moulting takes place in late summer before the migration southwards, and again on the wintering grounds in Africa before the migration northwards in spring. The whinchat is a common species with a wide range and the International Union for Conservation of Nature has classified it as being of "least concern".

It used to be said that to get a perfect English lawn all you have to do is plant it, and regularly mow it, weed it, roll it, feed it, and keep it well-watered for a couple of centuries. Our general-purpose lawns are grown from a collection of different grass seeds ranging from coarse to fine, and are fairly labour-intensive in the care they require.

Commonly known as moth orchids, is a genus of about seventy species of orchids in the family orchid. Orchids in this genus are monopodial epiphytes or lithophytes with long, coarse roots, short, leafy stems and long-lasting, flat flowers arranged in a flowering stem that often branches near the end. Orchids in this genus are native to India, China, Southeast Asia, New Guinea and Australia with the majority in Indonesia and the Philippines. A few to many, small to large, long-lasting, flat, often fragrant flowers are arranged on erect to hanging racemes or panicles. The sepals and petals are free from and spread widely apart from each other. The lateral sepals are usually larger than the dorsal sepal and the petals much wider than the sepals. The labellum is joined stiffly to the column and has three lobes. The side lobes are erect and more or less parallel to each other and the middle lobe sometimes has a pair of appendages or antennae. 39580

A male Hooded Merganser

Hooded Mergansers are my very favorite duck species. These adorable ducks migrate south for the winter, and for the past seven years a flock has spent the winter on our backyard pond, always arriving around Thanksgiving in small groups over the coarse of a week or so. This year our first arrival was exciting because it occurred on Thanksgiving Day, with four males and one female.

MANY THANKS FOR YOUR VISITS, COMMENTS AND FAVES

THEY ARE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!

One of the most common and widespread sparrows in North America. Fairly large with a long, rounded tail. Overall coarsely patterned with gray and brown, usually with more reddish-brown wings and tail. Look especially for thick brown streaks on the underparts and a broad dark mustache stripe. Significant variation in plumage geographically: relatively pale and rusty in the southwestern U.S.; blacker streaking in California; overall dusky in the Pacific Northwest. Larger, longer-tailed and usually more rusty than Savannah Sparrow. Found in a variety of scrubby habitats both near and far from human development, especially edges of fields, often near water. Listen for husky "chimp" calls and melodic song with chips and trills. (eBird)

There are many improvements done in Prague in the years of my absence, but the language is not one of them. I will not translate what is written there, but it is indicative what you hear in conversation in the streetcars, when you cut somebody off in traffic or dare to cross the street if somebody wants to turn at an intersection. The language is rough and tough, but that's about it. Nobody will shoot you.

. . Launch !

Loy Krathong is held on the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. In the western calendar this usually falls in November.

"Loi" means "to float". "Krathong" is a raft about a handspan in diameter traditionally made from a section of banana tree trunk although modern-day versions use specially made bread 'flowersor even styrofoam, decorated with elaborately-folded banana leaves, flowers, candles and incense sticks.

Northern Thailand has a unique addition to the Loi Krathong festival. It is the Yi Peng festival which includes launching "khom loi" later in the evening.

The khom loi (also known as "khoom fay") is a small hot air balloon made of coarse translucent paper and about the size of a large trash bag. The bags are usually white and three or four strings support the "candles / engines" that hang about half a meter below the bag. The engines are made by soaking rolls of toilet paper in wax or paraffin preparations, sliced crosswise into sections about 3 cm thick and a wick added. The engine also serves as illumination.

Launching a khom loi / khoom fay is no easy task. It is common to see several people trying to cooperate in the effort since the bag has to be held upright and steady while the air inside heats up. During that process the engine may go out, the wind may change, a string supporting the engine may break. Or someone might hold on when he was supposed to let go, or the thing may tangle in overhead lines or hang on the edge of a roof.

Here I was looking forward to a coarse-grained shot, helped by a dim light and a disgusting drizzle, suggesting a dreamy, quiet, absent look and mood. On the other hand, life... always life. Hustle and bustle, a constant coming and going, noise. Two ways, two worlds in a same picture. And a question: what is on her mind? Is she sad, thinking, or is she in the mood for love?...
