CSX Train B724 blasts off from Clinton, MA headed up to Bestway passing the former Clinton Union Station. This was a former bi-level station that served the former New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad on the upper level, and the lower level being served by the Boston and Maine Railroad. Since the station closed in the 1960's, it now only sees 2-3 trains a day, 2 daily freights on Pan Am, and 1 CSX train 5 days a week.

Nice little snowy (but chilly) evening to photograph the tree last night. Luckily Paige works on Mondays at the bar a couple blocks away so I could grab a couple of drinks to warm up!

Baddesley Clinton has been the home of the Ferrers family since 1517 and largely unchanged in 500 years, the house seen today was built by Henry Ferrers, a lawyer, diarist and antiquarian. The house was a sanctuary for the Ferrers family and persecuted Catholics who were hidden from priest hunters in its secret hiding places.

In 1438 John Brome, Under-Treasurer of England, purchased the manor, which passed to his son, Nicholas Brome (d.1517), who rebuilt the nearby parish church dedicated to St Michael, as a penance for having murdered the parish priest, a crime reputed to have been committed inside the house. The house from this period was equipped with gun-ports, and possibly a drawbridge over the moat. When Nicholas Brome died in 1517, the house passed to his daughter, who in 1500 had married Sir Edward Ferrers, Sheriff of Warwickshire. The house remained in the Ferrers family until 1940, when it was purchased by Thomas Walker, a relative of the family who changed his name to Ferrers. His son, who inherited it in 1970, sold the estate in 1980 to the National Trust, which now manages it.

Baddesley Clinton is a 15th century moated manor house, located near the historic town of Warwick. The original house was probably established sometime in the 13th century, though the present house dates from the 15th century. The site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and the Hall is a Grade I listed building.

In 1438, John Brome, the Under-Treasurer of England, bought the manor. It then passed to his son, Nicholas, who is thought to have built the east range, which is the main entrance. The house from this period was equipped with gun-ports, and possibly a drawbridge. When Nicholas Brome died in 1517, the house passed to his daughter, who married Sir Edward Ferrers (High Sheriff of Warwickshire) in 1500. The house remained in the ownership of the Ferrers family until 1940. The estate was sold in 1980 to the National Trust, which now manages it.

The house has extensive formal gardens and ponds, with many of the farm buildings dating back to the 18th century. Inside the house, the interiors reflect its heyday in the Elizabethan era, when it was a haven for persecuted Catholics - there are three priest's holes.

CN's Clinton Local came to Springfield on a sunny Saturday with a pair of rebuilt ex-Oakway SD60's. After dropping a car for the Illinois & Midland, they communicated with the CN Desk 2 RTC stating that their Airline work had been cancelled and they needed to head south to Contech. That industry is the southern most place to switch on the Gilman District (before the end of track at the Crown 3 Mine in Farmersville). CN 5475 South rumbles across the CN Connection switch at Brickyard in Springfield.

It is hoped in the near future fresh traffic will polish the Gilman District from the KCS at least north of Brickyard. For the time being, the three times a week visit by L554 from Clinton will have to suffice.

The Parish Church of Saint Michael

Baddesley Clinton is a village and civil parish in the county of Warwickshire, about 5 miles southeast of Solihull.

The parish church is dedicated to St Michael and is located close to Baddesley Clinton manor. The church has a west tower and a early 14th century nave.

From the NT:

Baddesley Clinton was the home of the Ferrers family for 500 years.

Much of the house you see today was built by Henry Ferrers, a lawyer, diarist and antiquarian, in the late 1500s.

The house was a sanctuary not only for the Ferrers family, but also for persecuted Catholics who were hidden from priest hunters in its secret hiding places during the 1590s.
