Meet the young Sunrise activists who marched 260 miles from Paradise to San Francisco, to ask our leaders for bold climate action.
We caught up with them at the Marin Civic Center in San Rafael, where local climate activists led by our partner Kevin Morrison greeted them with a fine vegan lunch and tributes.
Young activists featured in this photo set include Ema Govea, June Guthrie, Lola Guthrie, Vianni Ledesma, and many more. They came to join this two-week march from San Diego, Santa Rosa, Sebastopol and beyond.
In their talks and video interviews with me, they spoke about their fight for a more just and sustainable world. We told us why they promote a new Civilian Climate Corps, as the first step towards a Green New Deal.
I was impressed by their their passion and clear thinking, and am grateful to this “Generation on Fire” for leading the charge!

Global warming is no fiction.
Respect to all the young and old climate marchers.
There are many haters of the current #youthforclimate movement on the social media.. and those haters are usually the 1st ones to complain about the heatwaves, floodings, storm winds, drought, monsoonlike rain, extreme weather, dirty beaches and all the other examples of the changing climate and the environmental degradation.
Humanity is responsible for both so humanity should work towards solutions and the young are the engine of change.

Hundreds of young activists joined an inspiring Youth Climate Strike in Santa Rosa, to demand action on climate change.
This North Bay strike was organized by young climate activists Lucy London and Kelley Tillman, along with their peers at the Novato High Earth Club. They gave speeches, sang together, made posters, marched on City Hall and created a beautiful mosaic to honor mother earth.
Over a million students around the world skipped school this Friday to protest government inaction on climate change, with thousands of rallies in 125 countries, making it the largest youth climate action in history.
Their peaceful demonstration in Santa Rosa was very moving: these young people are sweet, smart, articulate, dedicated and they share an amazing creative energy and love for the earth. I want to be like them when I grow up!
Our Green Change team supported their youth action by providing a sound system, a large earth globe, and shooting videos and photos of their uprising. Thanks to our crew members Sarah Acker and Marilyn Price for their invaluable support of this important cause. :)
In coming weeks, I will create a special video story featuring Lucy, Kelley and their friends for Climate Heroes, our new series on the new leaders of the green revolution.
Even though this was a youth-led event, they welcomed the help of adult allies like us. It was a pleasure to join forces with these young leaders to fight for climate action together, across generations!

Green Change and friends organized a special Climate Art Exhibit for the 2019 Mill Valley Fall Arts Festiva, to engage more people to go green and fight climate change. We collaborated with these talented artists and dozens of volunteers to create this year’s featured presentation: Ann Dodge, Tess Felix, Fabrice Florin, Janey Fritsche, Al Grumet, Aurora Mahassine and Randy Rosenberg.
Together, we aimed to transform the redwood grove at Old Mill Park into a creative space for climate action. To that end, we prepared these artworks and activities for this special presentation:
• Ocean Plastic Portraits - stunning portraits made from recycled materials found on beaches
• Seeds of Change - a multi-dimensional living art installation rising 20 feet up in the redwood trees
• Keeping Score - a fun corn hole game about our food choices
• Hitting Home - an origami house activity to address our energy choices
• Alchemy of Fire - mixed-media paintings about the threat of wildfires
• This Island Earth - paintings celebrating the beauty and spiritual power of the nature
• Earth Bike - a unique art float created to inspire people to go green
• Green Change - an information table for learning about climate action
Special thanks to our gracious hosts Erma Murphy and Sylvia Barsky at MVFAF -- and to all the volunteers who so generously helped us present our work!

Enjoy this video vignette from Earth Day Marin, our popular environmental festival on April 23, 2023 in Mill Valley, California.
This video memory was shot and edited by event organizer Fabrice Florin, and reflects his personal experience of Earth Day Marin. It was created on his iPhone with the Photos app, which lets you whip out short videos quickly from "live photos" that include a few seconds of motion. Though it is rough, it gives a sense of what the event was like that day. To see more, be sure to watch our more professional videos -- and all the many other wonderful photos linked below.
Over 1,500 people of all ages joined our Earth Day celebration, to enjoy informative exhibits and fun activities, great music, fine art, good food, inspiring talks and a special youth zone. We invited participants to help create a better world by taking actions such as: use clean energy, eat sustainably, live lightly and build healthy communities.
Thanks to everyone who made Earth Day Marin possible, including our wonderful exhibitors, artists, musicians, speakers, volunteers and team members! Special thanks to our partners at Mill Valley Recreation, the City of Mill Valley and County of Marin – and kudos to all our sponsors, including Bay Area Air Quality Management Disctrict, Good Earth, Marin Community Foundation, MCE, Rex Foundation and Straus Family Creamery, and many more partners featured on our site. We hope you found this event as fulfilling as we did. :)
We’re particularly grateful to all our volunteer photographers and videographers, who graciously captured the spirit of our community celebration: Omar Aalami, Anita Baker, Griffith Ballard, Stu Bass, Lee Callister, Clari Cespedes, Luis Costa, Dana Dworin, Fabrice Florin, Liam Keane, Peter Joseph, Gil Latimer, Kevin Morrison, George Osner, Omid Shamsapour, Michael Wanger and Callie Zimmerman.

A dozen young climate activists gathered at the Novato High School to prepare posters, songs and speeches for their Youth Climate Strike in Santa Rosa the next day, where they planned to demand action on climate change.
This North Bay strike was organized by young activists Lucy London and Kelley Tillman, along with their peers at the Novato High Earth Club. The next day, they gave speeches, sang together, made posters, marched on City Hall and created a beautiful mosaic to honor mother earth.
Over a million students around the world skipped school this Friday to protest government inaction on climate change, with thousands of rallies in 125 countries, making it the largest youth climate action in history.
Their peaceful demonstration was very moving: these young people are sweet, smart, articulate, dedicated and they share an amazing creative energy and love for the earth. I want to be like them when I grow up!
Our Green Change team supported their youth movement by providing a sound system, a large earth globe, and recording videos and photos of their uprising.
