Youssef Aboura (Part III), originally of Morocco, is my barber. He just returned from a three-week trip to Casablanca for his brother's wedding. Seen here cutting a client's hair. He's my irregular French tutor. His cousin Zachariah just moved here from Paris and his English is worse than my French, so we get along great.

In the guest bedroom, the Client wanted a colorful and welcoming space. I took inspiration from the Client’s Indian heritage.

The shutters and ceiling fan came with the home. There is a bathroom to the back left of the room and a walk-in closet to the left of the entrance.

I designed the room from the rug. I pulled in two Moroccan nightstands (one wooden, one brass) to compliment the rug. Additionally, I included a beige dresser (barely photographed on far left) from a South Asian import store. It includes a red, yellow and blue colored design of Hindu god Krishna on the glass door of the facade. I added a blue and white silk comforter to add more pattern on a different scale of the rug. There is additionally a console table for guests to layout items.

Getting closer to the end, and it's time to think about finishing the project... with wood finish. I'm going by my client's (mom's) request here. She wants it to match our barn back home. This is lighter than the barn, though the barn has darkened with age. She did also say "not dark - keep it light," and I'm pretty sure this is about what she's hoping for. There are actually 2 different stains here, half on the left, and half on the right, but they look identical. I'm a little disappointed that even after properly mixing up the pre-stain, and wood finish ("Colonial Maple"), and following the directions, and wait times, I'm getting a blotchy look. Of course, this is scrap that hasn't been sanded ever. I'm pretty sure the finely sanded (400 grit) TV stand will accept the stain far better.

After extensive reading as to the uses, pros, and cons of everything here, and other things recommended in the instructions not shown here, I have decided to go pick up spar varnish, instead of using either Polycrylic™, or Polyurethane, as spar varnish is good for lots of sunlight, and will keep the wood from graying over time. The TV stand will be in a room with huge glass doors and windows on 3 sides, and 2 large skylights overhead. It gets very bright in there. I don't want it to gray in the areas around the TV's shadow.

At one of my client's homes (where the red on gold rose shot was taken) this tree would have likely ruined the roses had it fallen along side that brick wall, or would have broken through the kitchen window, had the wall not been there. That was a close as her huge house came to being hit by a falling tree, but the vacant lot to the left of this scene had over $9,000 worth of clean up to remove oaks and pines that fell or were broken.

“We’re used to designing with a printout sheet of the assignment,” says senior Tonyee Ng (second from left). “But this time, we all came up with 12 really organized ideas to give the board [of trustees] another perspective of slavery. In that way, it opens the client’s mind.”

(Tiny! Originally a custom piece, but too tiny for the client's head.)

I didn't take this photo. This is a scan of the photo that the client was nice enough to send to me after the project was completed.

I designed the layout (along with the client), assisted with the cabinetry selection process, placed the cabinetry order and facilitated the order through the engineering and production processes. By working so closely with both the client and then the cabinetry company, I can ensure that the finished product is exactly what the client is expecting.

A happy client is the perfect ending! :)
