This critically endangered palm species been called by many as the most beautiful palm to come from Madagascar. Its only habitat is in a steep-sided valley below the long ridge leading eastwards from the village of Sahavary, north-east of Maroantsetra at 350-450m elevation. There are only ~10 adults left in habitat with just a few seedlings. The ground below the adult palms is said to be literally covered with ungerminated seed and it has not been determined why so very few of these sprout. In cultivation these large seeds are notoriously difficult seeds to germinate. It is a truly massive palm species that grows up to 20m tall with a trunk up to 1m in diameter.
The new leaves change in colour from light burgundy to lavender with a glaucous bloom in both juveniles and adult plants, later fading to dark green. The leaves remain bifid for the first few years of growth. Its crownshaft is perhaps one of the most ornamental aspects of this species. It is up to 1.2m in length and is multicoloured in shades of pink, lavender and grey, quite a contrast to its dark green leaves, dark burgundy petioles and colourful emergent leaves which can grow up to 4.2m in length. The infrafoliar inflorescences are quite large, 2m long and branched multiple times. Currently Jeff Marcus has the largest seedling in the US, and I believe the largest specimen ex situ is in north Queensland, Australia.
I first learnt about this special species when I was 18 and got very excited about it. I bought a seedling in 2004 when I was working in California and kept it very happy in a client's greenhouse. I wanted very much to take it with me to Hawai'i but palm parts are restricted for import from the mainland. This species is quite rare in cultivation, especially in climates suitable for its growth. It is thought that there are many more of these in greenhouses in climates too cool for them than outdoors in climates where such a massive palm could grow and successfully reach a size to make reproduction possible. This is really quite a shame.
I was able to purchase 110 seeds in 2008 and divided my seeds between two clear plastic storage bins. Because of mixed tips I found about which substrates are suitable for sowing seed of this species I settled on sowing half the seed in coarse perlite, peat (1:1) and the other half in vermiculite, peat (2:1). This left each bin divided in half. Both bins were then placed onto a heating mat of which I kept the thermostat set between 32-38°C.
I began to see germination 3 months after sowing. I was ecstatic! I had far better success in the perlite, peat medium. Sprouting was staggered: 3 in the 3rd month, 5 in the 4th, 3 in the 5th, 1 in the 6th, 3 in the 7th, and 1 in the 8th. 17 germinated, but 3 of these didn't have enough strength to push their eophylls out. Still I was very pleased to have 14 healthy seedlings.
In December 2009 I shared 8 of my seedlings with Hawaiian institutions:
5 to the National Tropical Botanical Garden, Lāwa'i, Kaua'i
1 to Waimea Valley Botanical Garden, O'ahu
1 to Lyon Arboretum, O'ahu
1 to Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden, O'ahu
I really hope that they will grow successfully in these gardens to help in the preservation of this species and also so the public can enjoy them because currently the only sizeable plants in Hawai'i are in private gardens, mostly on Hawai'i island.

REFLECTION OF MINERAL
The site is located near the center of Tokyo. It is a small 44m2 corner plot bounded by two streets. Conforming to legal conditions and in response to the client’s wish for a ‘roofed garage’ the volume was trimmed from various directions. Using the words ‘Mineral’ and ‘reflection’ as guiding concepts, Atelier Tekuto proceeded to use subtraction as a positive tool for design.
MINERAL
Minerals are phenomena that combine abstract properties (conceptual objects) with nonfigurative properties (objects whose presence of matter is more tangible). Changes from transparent to translucent to opaque occur according to light intensity and angle. The mineral body cannot be regarded as a simple element.
REFLECTION
Reflection is a recent concept pertaining to the perception of space. Vision is an important factor in the recognition of space. By controlling geometries (facets with three factors: transparent, translucent and opaque) and entangling them in a three-dimensional way inside the internal space, visual reflection is induced. This results in a deviation from the restrictiveness of space.
As people move inside the space, or as light enters from changing angles, the facet’s presence changes, creating a dynamic space. In contrast to the abstractness of the polyhedron are the kitchen, counter shelf, stairs, floors and toilet box equipped with functionality that exist as nonfigurative objects.
The third floor bathroom unit features a mirror finish in stainless steel, which combines both concepts of object and reflection, and presents itself as a substitution of both ‘minerals’ and ‘reflection’.
The Relationship with the surrounding environment is expressed in the small plaza open to the street, a piloti like space that emerged after placing the garage on ground floor. Its liberating feeling might trigger some change in the surrounding streetscape.

敷地は東京の住宅密集地にあり、5.15mと3.70mの道路に鋭角に挟まれた、44.62㎡の小さな異形敷地である。建築法規的に道路斜線が二方向からかかり北側斜線も含め、最大ボリュームの形が多角形に切り取られる。
若きクライアントの3つの要望（面白い・最大ボリュームの確保・屋根付き駐車場）と敷地が持つ絶対条件から最初に思い描いたものは地中に『鉱物』が埋れているイメージ。
様々な角度から受ける規制と採光、住居としてのスペースを最大ボリュームから削りとり、多角形がもつ面の構成を壁・床・天井・開口と、建築における空間構成へ置換して形態を決定した。
その行為はダイヤモンドの価値を決めるのに最も重要されるCutと同様である。

The client's specification was "bright pink glittery icing with blue flowers". I wasn't convinced at first but have to admit, they came out OK.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Walthamstow, East London*. Here are the details of the project
The Indonesian Garden in
Walthamstow, East London E17
Client wishes to transform the garden into a practical space suitable for dining and entertaining
The design should reflect the client’s interest in Thailand, and should have space to incorporate her collection of various Thai-style statues
It is essential that the finished space be low maintenance
Privacy is also a consideration
The design creates a split-level space in which there are two distinct sections. The first is an area of slate paving (client to choose style of slate) within a flush framework of treated oak railway sleepers, upon which the client could include a table and chairs, a steamer chair or fire pit. This will also provide a suitable area to house her Asian-style statues and other ephemera.
The second section consists of a raised area of slate paving, framed on three sides by railway sleeper raised beds and featuring two large, L-shaped, railway sleeper bench seats. The two sections of the space will be joined by railway sleeper steps to provide a simple sense of continuity, while the side boundaries of the garden will be re-fenced with standard closeboard fencing. The fencing will then be clad with bamboo screening to both lighten the space and add an Asian flavour to the garden.
The end boundary will be replaced with a block wall, rendered and painted lilac. This will also help to add light to the space, will give the garden a courtyard feel and will allow for adornment in the form of a large sunburst-shaped mirror edged with bamboo cane. Further ornamentation could be added to the wall by the client at a later date.

Gamla Model Makers was commissioned to develop a multimedia package presenting a patented concept of a Heavy Lift Cargo Carrier aircraft developed by ConcordLift TM. In a limited timeframe and budget we developed and produced 3D digital models of that conceptual aircraft, generated 3D based line drawings and photorealistic color renderings/illustrations, and even produced a short animation film illustrating a take-off procedure of the aircraft. According to the Client's wish we developed separate 3 packages presenting 3 versions of the aircraft: 20 TEU capacity Cargo Carrier, 90 TEU capacity Cargo Carrier and a RoRo - a Cargo Carrier customized specifically to transport a large number of automobiles.
This is one of the 3D based renderings, representing a version of the aircraft designed to carry a large number of automobiles.
Please, note: it is not our intent to initiate any discussions concerning the concept of the aircraft and proposed innovations included in its design. Our only intent is to show a samples of our work in the field of 3D modeling, creating 3D based presentation materials and 3D based marketing animation as well. Please, do not post any comments concerning the concept and design of the aircraft itself - such comments are not relevant and we reserve the rights to remove such comments.
These were just some of the cupcakes for my corporate client's 30th birthday. The cupcakes are for the lunches and are presented on an upturned wine glass (will try to get a photo of that next week). The tiered cakes are for the cocktail functions.
So far so good - gotten through my first busy week : not only had the cakes I posted pics of, but some others too! And a wedding cake tomorrow (photo to follow), AND Erin had a week of concerts at school, so it's been *a week*.
