“As an architect, Paul Mulhern took on a very tricky project for me at the above address, a Seventies terraced house on a long narrow site in a housing estate. This was a house that had been lived in wisely for a while but latterly not too well.
My brief to him was to illuminate what had become a murky, dark, cramped and very dilapidated property by creating a space filled with light and air. I also wanted him to bring it up to modern standards of insulation, wiring and plumbing, and thereby making snug what had been damp and cold.
On such a site, the brief seemed impossible and when I led him into the property in its original condition, I expected him to be daunted, even to refuse to have anything to do with it, but his reaction was immediately to see it as a challenge.
And how brilliantly he overcame that challenge! While remaining aware of my relatively limited budget, the design he produced involved gutting the entire house and opening it up to light from the roof, via three voids. The result is the fulfilment of my own dream, the testament to which is the steady stream of neighbours arriving on various pretexts but with the obvious aim of being invited in.
Throughout the construction vicissitudes (and there were many, none of his making) he remained steadily supportive to me in what was a very difficult and long process. I cannot praise him highly enough for his tenacity, his concentration on what was best for the house and for me as a client - and not least for his calm tact when things fell apart, as they frequently did.
His professionalism and collaborative spirit are outstanding but overarching all of the above, his creativity and vision were and are superb”.

Good old "Tattoo Bargains" or "Helping a buddy get started" scenario blows-up in the client's face.

What is fine organic gardening?
Fine organic gardening is the practice and skill of using low-input, organic methods to design, install and maintain ornamental horticulture gardens and plantings.
Garden and Landscape Design
The design process begins with discovering the client’s values, lifestyle and vision, plus a site assessment for cultural conditions including soil testing, land use history, geology, sun and shade patterns, hydrology, existing plantings and their conditions. The client’s vision is then expressed in the design. It’s an iterative, collaborative process.
Putting the right plants in the right places - in the existing cultural conditions where they have the best chance not just to survive - but thrive - is ideal economically and environmentally. While many plants are adaptable to a range of site condition, others are choosier about the amount of light they receive; how quickly the soil drains or how long it retains water; the presence and availability macro nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and sulphur - and micro nutrients like boron (B), chlorine (CI), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), zinc (Zn) and nickel (Ni). With organic practices, we only add nutrients as indicated by soil testing and for the individual needs of plants. As for sun and shade, it’s easier to change the soil than the sun. Even so, at Garden-911 Boston we prefer to use the soil that the site provides.
We also design so that plants with similar needs for cultural conditions are grouped together. Why put an alkaline-loving lilac next to an acid-loving rhododendron, for instance? This concept expands to designing in plant communities, where hard-working native plants that share similar needs have often evolved together - along with the birds and the bees, so to speak - since the retreat of the last ice age some ten thousand years ago, to form high-functioning, self-regulating habitat ecosystems.
Installation
When installing plants, the most important preparations are to ensure the plant materials are in robust condition; know where they’re designed to be planted - and that the designed spacing includes accommodation for the mature size of your plantings; digging the planting hole only to the ideal depth and no more - and placing the root flare at grade and no lower or higher; mulching any bare ground to conserve soil moisture, moderate soil temperature and suppress weeds; watering completely and carefully by building a soil berm or other mechanical structure to keep water from running downhill instead of into the root zone; having a watering plan in place and practicable for the first one to two years of plant establishment depending on the species and conditions; and installing a ground cover layer that, once established, can eliminate the need for mulch.
Mulch should be a locally sourced, recently living plant material that is free from dyes. colorants and noxious insects, and not contain any recycled construction debris. The very best mulch in most situations, where needed, is leaf mulch or leaves that come from your own property. This organic practice allows you to recycle in place nutrients and materials that are freely available on your own property, without processing and transportation over long distances.
Maintenance
Fine organic garden maintenance include annual, perennial, tree, shrub and vine care, plus weed and pest management. Trees and shrubs need selective pruning to maintain their form and reduce the risk of pests, bacterial and fungal infections. For perennials and annuals, knowing their growth habits, bloom times and design intent will inform how you want to care for them, from thinning new shoots in spring, staking, deadheading, and dividing (perennials). The best organic weed management practices start with properly identifying the weeds and knowing their life cycles. This way you know what to expect and when is the ideal time to manage them before they’re able to reproduce by making mature seed - or vegetatively. If you disturb or cut newly emerging growth on a regular basis, early and often - when it’s much easier to do - you’ll be well on your way to spending as little time on weeds as possible, without conventional chemicals.
The big picture of fine organic gardening is that you save time and money, contribute to the ecological function of your neighborhood by including native plants well-suited for your yard, use no conventional chemicals, and enjoy a healthier outdoor living space to suit your style.

REFLECTION OF MINERAL
The site is located near the center of Tokyo. It is a small 44m2 corner plot bounded by two streets. Conforming to legal conditions and in response to the client’s wish for a ‘roofed garage’ the volume was trimmed from various directions. Using the words ‘Mineral’ and ‘reflection’ as guiding concepts, Atelier Tekuto proceeded to use subtraction as a positive tool for design.
MINERAL
Minerals are phenomena that combine abstract properties (conceptual objects) with nonfigurative properties (objects whose presence of matter is more tangible). Changes from transparent to translucent to opaque occur according to light intensity and angle. The mineral body cannot be regarded as a simple element.
REFLECTION
Reflection is a recent concept pertaining to the perception of space. Vision is an important factor in the recognition of space. By controlling geometries (facets with three factors: transparent, translucent and opaque) and entangling them in a three-dimensional way inside the internal space, visual reflection is induced. This results in a deviation from the restrictiveness of space.
As people move inside the space, or as light enters from changing angles, the facet’s presence changes, creating a dynamic space. In contrast to the abstractness of the polyhedron are the kitchen, counter shelf, stairs, floors and toilet box equipped with functionality that exist as nonfigurative objects.
The third floor bathroom unit features a mirror finish in stainless steel, which combines both concepts of object and reflection, and presents itself as a substitution of both ‘minerals’ and ‘reflection’.
The Relationship with the surrounding environment is expressed in the small plaza open to the street, a piloti like space that emerged after placing the garage on ground floor. Its liberating feeling might trigger some change in the surrounding streetscape.

敷地は東京の住宅密集地にあり、5.15mと3.70mの道路に鋭角に挟まれた、44.62㎡の小さな異形敷地である。建築法規的に道路斜線が二方向からかかり北側斜線も含め、最大ボリュームの形が多角形に切り取られる。
若きクライアントの3つの要望（面白い・最大ボリュームの確保・屋根付き駐車場）と敷地が持つ絶対条件から最初に思い描いたものは地中に『鉱物』が埋れているイメージ。
様々な角度から受ける規制と採光、住居としてのスペースを最大ボリュームから削りとり、多角形がもつ面の構成を壁・床・天井・開口と、建築における空間構成へ置換して形態を決定した。
その行為はダイヤモンドの価値を決めるのに最も重要されるCutと同様である。

The client's wish was to create a classical 'London Square' for Beaufort Park. Based on a classic layout the park shows that it is a contemporary park through twists in it's design language, like this entrance detail (being design built the during construction the bespoke gates were not installed, hence the oversized uplights of the original design, which were installed after all).
Planting 12m high London Plane (Platanus x acerifolia) and other specimen trees like a 10m high Cedrus libani created an instant impact. Planting is based on plants one can find in classical London squares. The use of extensive lasting and sacrificial ground covers reduces open ground and maintenance apart from being more attractive.
The park was built well before the buildings overlooking the park are constructed so the resident's will start using the park after it has been established.
