I have been volunteer-shooting theater for 15-years now, albeit, mostly small-time local community-theater, like this. My client's applications are; marketing and historical archive for the theater, and personal portfolios for the costumer, set-designer, lighting-designer and actors. This is my quick-and-dirty “A-pass” version, and this is as-delivered to the client.
I sometimes spend hours working on the development details of a personal piece, because I am an old-retired-guy with nothing else better to do, and because it’s fun. When I am working on a “commercial shoot”, however, I can’t afford to spend that much time on any one shot, because there are lots-and-lots of frames to go through, I am committed to a fast turn-around, and I just can’t spend time sweating-the-details, when the client doesn't care about those details. The uses for this output are mostly low-res, such as press-releases, online publicity, social-media posts, and electronic CV's, not pixel-peeping artwork on a high-res monitor.
For these shoots, I need to get the development job done on this image, and move on to the next one, within about 5-minutes. This means that my “commercial workflow” is a lot different from my “artsy-fartsy workflow”, and much more streamlined. Like a JPG-algorithm, I have a formula. That makes this "A-pass" output my equivalent of easy-breezy SOOC-processing
One of the things that theater-shooting has done for me, is to make me sensitive to what I call “visual-story”. On the one hand, theater work is easy, because I know that there will be some form of human drama happening that should make for an interesting image.
On the other hand, like street-shooting, I don’t know exactly what’s coming, or who will be emoting what, or when this will happen, or what side of the stage will have the best angle for it. People also have an annoying habit of not being photogenic all the time. There will be turned heads and bad shadows, and goofy expressions, and subject motion, and all kinds of unattractive issues beyond my control during a real-time performance.
Whether stage or street, getting The Shot is not just a matter of pressing the shutter randomly, trusting to luck, and calling it "art". I believe that it takes some skill to see and respond to that fleeting dramatic moment that is worth the proverbial “thousand-words”. Even with good actors and a script, these moments may only last for 2 or 3 seconds, as people move around and the scene evolves.
Since part of my job on a production-shoot is to visually document the plot of the show, I can’t afford to miss one of these pivotal dramatic moments. I need to anticipate, and then react within those few seconds to create a single, compelling image that will encapsulate the story of the scene without words. Anyone can do this with multiple frames and call it "video", but my goal is to tell the story in a single frame.
I believe that the first requirement for this kind of story-telling is that the ”technicals” of camera settings and shooting technique need to be reflexive. I can’t be thinking about the camera while I am stalking The Moment, or I’ll miss it. The image recording device needs to be an extension of me. This is why I hard-set Tv and Av, do a spot-meter/AEL to 0-ev on the brightest thing, and use single-point focus, which I move around manually with my joy-stick. This way, I am in complete control of what is happening inside the camera, and I don’t need to worry about what the camera’s automation may-or-may-not be doing this time.
When I shoot-a-show using this technique, the “execution” is a given. I am confident, and I know what I will get from each shutter-press. With AEL, my exposure setting is good for a whole lighting-cue, regardless of framing in the tricky high-contrast stage environment, and I know precisely where my focus point is, because I put it there personally. I also use auto-ISO, because ISO just doesn’t matter anymore with modern developing tools, and one less vector to juggle is a good-thing.

Been stuck on an AJAX issue since morning pounding my head on the table, hoping death comes to me before the client's mail.. but then came along Subhasish - the God of all things AJAX and saved my life. Though I'm really not sure what I'm still alive for.
I also think I can carry off fifty odd sad gassed heart balloons on my head with quite the panache. Here's celebrating a coding issue solved and a great vacation to look forward to. In another three days I fly to Hong Kong and then to China - that too without my baby by my side. Celebrations I screech!
Okay, now back to work - need to finish a LOT before I head out.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in South Woodford, Essex here are the details of the project.
The Colourful Garden in South Woodford, Essex
BRIEF:
This space was a fairly blank canvas, containing few features other than a lawn, an old log-roll raised bed, and a large, well constructed garden shed. The area adjoining the house had recently been block paved, and this was to be integrated into the design. The client wanted a bold and vibrant garden that functioned on several levels - including a football pitch for their children and a sociable area for the adults.
SOLUTION:
To accommodate the client’s love of colour, and in keeping with the style of the interior of the house, the design was based around blocks of vivid orange or blue, taking inspiration from the abstract artist, Mondrian. The existing shed and fruit tree were removed to allow the construction of main social area of the space.
This comprised an area of decking bordered on two sides by a long, L-shaped fixed bench seat, backed by lush planting in raised rendered block beds to create a relaxing, social focus to the space. Provision for al fresco dining was given with the inclusion of a large decking table, with a moveable decked box on casters providing seating for the client’s children.
The block paving directly outside the house was integrated into the rest of the garden with the addition of several rendered block planters of various heights and dimensions. These were painted either orange or blue on different surfaces and planted with tall architectural specimens or low ground covering plants to give variation to the heights and perspective at play in the space.
A high rendered block bed at the bottom of the garden provides a dramatic frame to space, and also serves as a sturdy goal for impromptu football matches. A further low raised bed running down the left hand side of the garden ties the back of the space into the main area. This bed terminates in a higher raised bed to the left of the decked area, which acts a frame for
a stunning stainless steel water wall.
Planting in the space is strong and architectural, and chosen for year round interest with the inclusion of bamboo, spiky cordylines, tall grasses, and orange and blue flowering plants such as hosta and crocosmia tying the planting into the
overall colour scheme.
A dramatic yet functional lighting scheme adds the finishing touches to the space. Brick lighting illuminates the lawn area,
with strong spotlights providing an overall wash to the garden while picking out selected specimen plants in the beds. Blue LED deck lights cuff the edge of the decking, giving an outline to the central entertaining area. Finally, three blue neon stick lights placed in the planters on the block paving provide an unusual, eye-catching, entrance to the space.

Client's fury at identity fraud

A banned solicitor has been accused of conning a client by impersonating another lawyer in an elaborate fraud. The client also claims that John O'Donnell, 61 cost her 50,000 by botching a land deal and that he failed to turn up to defend two small claims for her.
Widow Elizabeth Campbell, 69, believed that the solicitor working for her was called Colin Davidson. But she discovered "Colin" was actually O'Donnell - who is serving two five year bans from working as a solicitor and is bankrupt - when she saw his photo in the Sunday Mail.
Elizabeth, from East Kilbride, said : "I met "Colin" in his office many times between March and September last year. I was stunned when I came across a Sunday Mail story about O'Donnell which carried his photo. I recognised him as the man I knew as Colin. I was shattered."
Elizabeth claimed that O'Donnell botched a land deal dispute by allowing it to be sold for less than its true value, costing her 50,000. And she also accused him of lying by saying that he defended two small claims cases at Hamilton & Glasgow Sheriff Courts.
Elizabeth, who suffered from depression after her husband's death four years ago, said she had trusted "Colin" when they first met.
She said : "He said that he understood as he had also suffered. I thought to myself, I've got a soul mate here" Then I discovered that he had failed to represent me at Hamilton and Glasgow Sheriff Courts for small claims and two decrees were awarded against me. Debt collectors began chasing me yet he continued to lie and say that he had been in court. I've been able to recall the Glasgow case but the Hamilton case is still against me."
O'Donnell was given a five year ban in 2009 and another five-year ban in 2010 due to his appalling track record of professional misconduct. His bankruptcy also disqualifies him from practising.
In March last year, the Sunday Mail warned the Law Society of Scotland that O'Donnell was allegedly working for the real Colin Davidson;s firm Davidson Fraser. Former Bankrupt Davidson - who has since died - told us then : "He's not employed here."
Elizabeth believes she was targeted because she was vulnerable. She said : "He only took around 210 from me. I think the long- term aim was to get my house." She added that staff at the law firm's office in Clarkston Road, Glasgow seemed aware of the deception, making excuses when she asked why people called him John.
She said : "I was so angry that I was going to attend Davidson's funeral. I wish I had done just for O'Donnell's reaction. I find it incredible that he has been able to get away with this, especially given that the Law Society was warned what was going on."
Law Society chiefs have refused to say if other clients were also duped and declined to comment on the case. A senior legal insider said that O'Donnell could now face criminal prosecution for working as a solicitor without a practising certificate.
BID TO BEAT BAN AT LEGAL BODY'S CHRISTMAS PARTY
Another lawyer tried to strike a deal for O'Donnell at a Law Society Christmas party in 2009. A Scottish Solicitors' Discipline Tribunal report said Steven Gold asked Law Society prosecutor Elaine Motion to consider dropping complaints against O'Donnell if he agreed to surrender his practising certificate.
Motion met O'Donnell as the Society considered five more complaints. But because he was not strick off by the SSDT, Motion decided that O'Donnell "may be hearing from her again".
LINKS TO SOLICITOR PAID BY OUR TAXES
Elizabeth was referred to Davidson Fraser by taxpayer funded lawyer Gilbert Anderson.
Anderson is a Citizens Advice Bureau adviser at Hamilton Sheriff Court whose wages are paid by the Scottish Legal Aid Board. He said yesterday : "I gave her a list of firms and she asked if I knew of any particular firm. Davidson Fraser were not specified."
However, Anderson's name appeared as an employee on the firm's letter headed paper in July 2011.
He said : "The moment Mrs Campbell brought that to my notice I was down to Davidson Fraser to find out exactly what they were doing. Mr Davidson said he was under the impression I was going to work for them. But I said no, I said I would consider. It was agreed that he was to remove my name."
Davidson also used a room to meet clients at the volunteer-run South Side Advice Centre in Glasgow. But he was kicked out in October due to a number of complaints.

18K gold ring made from client's scrap gold jewelry. Raised the karat of the scrap and cast the ring with the Delft clay casting kit. Snake was made from heat hardened clay. Ring shank was carved from wax, cast separately and then attached. The gold was depletion gilded and was given a burnished, brushed finish. Ruby eyes. This was the client's design, having been born in the year of the snake, and was a ring she had dreamed of having for long time. Big ring! Final weight was about 24.7 grams.
Real brick from the client's old dismantled chimney were carefully veneered to be installed to the placard base.
For my client's logo, she wanted something fun, definitely not conventional, modern, and of course, something that communicates travel. I presented her with 3 ideas, and this seemed to be the clear winner amongst everyone, and it was my recommendation, too. The word "my" has the handwritten personal touch of her services and the simplified plane icon is cute and memorable. And to accompany it, I created a custom pattern with icons that touches on different points of travel from conventional to the unconventional – plane, a cruise boat/yacht, hot air balloon, and a scooter (on the iPhone case). On the reverse side of the business card, I thought a tag line would help define the business to her audience – "your customized escape to the world". Nisha truly wants to provide her clients with an escape to a world of relaxation & exploration, and away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
