Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in South Woodford, Essex*. Here are the details of the project

The Family Landscape Garden in South Woodford, Essex RM14

BRIEF:

Lawn, planting and privacy were considerations for the client in this small sub-urban garden. The brief was to create a garden that would accommodate the needs of the client’s child whilst being interesting to adults and usable for dining and entertainment. The solution would need to deal with the different levels and provide interest throughout the year.

SOLUTION:

This design makes maximum use of limited space by dividing the garden into two distinct areas.

The existing fences along all boundaries were removed and replaced with new fencing, upon which willow screens were fixed.

The main focal point of the space takes the form of a seating/dining area to the left hand side of the garden. Constructed from robust new treated railway sleepers, this area comprises an L-shaped fixed bench backed by a tall L-shaped raised bed and complimented by a freestanding table and low bench (also constructed from railway sleepers). This area screened from the rest of the garden by a rusted iron mesh trellis to the back of the raised bed. Flooring in this section and down the sideway is in stylish golden Iroko hardwood decking. The sideway itself features a tall stainless steel ‘monolith’ water feature, which can be viewed from all sides.

Access to the garden is provided by a set of decking steps from the patio door leading to a small rectangle of slate paving directly in front of the patio doors. Further decked steps lead from the paving to the second half of the space, which features a kidney shaped lawn bordered on one side by a curved granite sett path. This path leads to a 1.5m diameter granite sett paved circle in the bottom left corner of the garden, large enough to accommodate a café-style table and chairs or display a variety of pots or garden ornaments.

A child-friendly railway sleeper ‘growing’ bed was constructed behind the exposed side of the L-shaped raised bed and left un-planted for future use by the client’s child. Planting throughout the space was chosen to provide year round interest, including a mimosa in the left hand corner. The addition of long flowering herbaceous perennials ensures maximum colour throughout much of the year, while evergreen shrubs help give the garden backbone across the seasons. Climbing clematis planted around the boundaries will over time help to soften and obscure the fencing.

Lighting in the garden is simple yet comprehensive. The risers of each decking step are lit with small ‘micro led’ lights to safely guide the user into and out of the space. Net lighting on the mesh screen draws ones eye to the seating area, while stainless steel bollard lights placed at either end of the L-shaped bed the bench frame this section of the space. The stainless steel water feature is illuminated from both sides by spotlights fixed to the decking. Low-voltage spotlights throughout the planting beds give the garden a subtle, gentle glow.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Leytonstone, London here are the details of the project.

The Terrace House Garden in Leytonstone, London E11

BRIEF:

This plot was a long urban garden and was almost completely bare, but for two large, established trees. The client was attempting to construct a pond in the near right corner using green slate boulders as decoration, and requested that this should be included in the design.

The interior of the house had a modern, contemporary feel fused with Victorian architecture. As the patio doors lead directly from the kitchen/diner into the garden, the garden becomes very much an extension of the house – as such the style of the interiorwas of particular consideration in the design the exterior space.

SOLUTION:

The final design created a low maintenance garden with a simple and contemporary feel. The area directly behind the house was laid with decking, running half way down the left side of the space. New wooden fences, to replace the existing worn out wire fences, were erected down the right of the garden, onto which a selection of clematis and everlasting sweet peas were trained.

The main area of the garden consisted of a tapered, oval shaped lawn, encircled by a raised bed following the same shape as the lawn. A smaller, tapered oval raised bed in the middle of the lawn served to slightly mask the bottom of the garden, breaking up the space and helping to create a sense of intrigue.

The simplicity of the borders was echoed in the planting, which consisted of white flowers and green foliage. Cool, crisp and elegant, a white planting scheme provides an air of harmony and tranquillity, and is well suited to the style of the garden and the interior of the house. An area devoted to graceful architectural ferns helped to accentuate the simplicity

of the space and serves to provide a stunning and effective display throughout the year.

Re-designing the layout of the client’s existing pond, using state boulders together with a powerful pump to produce an effective waterfall, helped to create a striking water feature. The pond and surrounding area was given life with the addition of water lilies and other aquatic and semi-aquatic plants. A bowed Cedrus libani (ssp.atlantica) ‘Glauca’, trailing branches in the water, presented the final flourish to the space.

TESTIMONIAL:

“Katrina and her team worked extremely hard and long hours to complete the garden quickly and with minimum disruption to our home. Considering that we have no access other than through the entire house, there was almost no disruption to our lives.

Watching the garden grow from its original design and come to life was amazing. It exceeded our expectations completely, and the aftercare pack and service offered by Earth Designs was brilliant.

We have no hesitation in recommending Earth Designs to any of our friends, who have also been amazed with our fantastic new garden - of course we have been showing it off at every sunny opportunity. Thanks to Katrina and her team at Earth Designs for such a fantastic design, utilising the space brilliantly and creating an outside space that we are extremely proud of.”

After photo of client's Corolla.

The client’s brief was to design a place that reinforced the game of golf, operating primarily as a “private box” whilst also providing the capacity to transform into a gateway headquarters for large competitive events.

Contemporist says 'Hunkered into the earth with less than a third of its volume penetrating above the ground plane, The Michael Hill Clubhouse seeks to integrate and intensify the experience of golf’s primary relationship with the landscape. An integral truss system creates a skewed form, and supports a green roof planted in native tussock.'

The Clubhouse was design by Patterson Associates and is well worth taking a look at on the Contemporist web site.

A client's laptop had a motherboard go bad on it, so I did what I normally do and try to back up any data on the hard drive before it gets sent out for warranty repairs. So when I went to get at the hard drive on this particular Sony Vaio laptop, I found that it required the removal of a dozen screws and sweat-inducing care to not break any of the clips as you disassemble the keyboard (?!?!) so you can move it away and get to the hard drive.

The empty area to the bottom left is the spot where the hard drive goes.

Most laptops take 2-4 screws to access the hard drive and usually from the bottom and/or side - and take less than 2 minutes to remove. This one took me about an hour the first time - most of which was spent trying to get tiny and thin clips to let go without snapping any off. It took me 20 minutes the second time around. No clips were broken, either!

Trust me, stay away from buying these. They're not worth the extra money and will end up costing you even more to get repaired when (not if) something eventually fails.

My client’s name is Harriet. As you can see from the “before” picture, Harriet had some major figure flaws, from her ponderous thighs to the rolls of fat around her neck, to the unusually elongated torso. My design choices were also heavily influenced by her semi-aquatic lifestyle in and along the banks of the Lunga River in Zambia, Africa.

Her new outfit was designed to deal with both her figure flaws and her lifestyle. I’ll start with the leg warmers. Harriet does not wear shoes, as they would impede her when she is swimming. But her legs get very cold in the water during the winter months. So I designed legwarmers for her that she could wear in and out of the water. They bell out near the bottom to make her look more feminine, and also to disguise the size of her feet. All you see is the pretty ruffle—no telling how big the feet are under there! For all you know they might be downright dainty!

The dress was quite a challenge because of the shape of Harriet’s torso and the position of her head. She insisted that the top had to be grey so that she could still swim along the surface of the river undetected, with just the top of her head and back showing. I added the cable down the back to give the illusion of ripples in the grey water of the Lunga. Now she will be able to continue with her little game of sneaking up behind a boat full of tourists and giving the boat a little nudge. She gets a big kick out of hearing the shrieks and nervous titters that follow this innocuous behavior on her part.

I was a little taken aback by Harriet’s other two color choices though—the bright turquoise of the dry season sky and the bright yellow of ripe maize, which by coincidence is one of her favorite foods, when she can get it. I knitted panels of twisted-rib turquoise (it’s so slimming) and interspersed them with godets of maize yellow, which have some nice feminine yarn overs. There are ties on the inside to go around Harriet’s legs so that the dress doesn’t just go all over the place when she’s swimming. When she emerges on to dry land to forage at night, the yellow godets make it easy for her friends to locate here, even in the dark. And they serve the added function of scaring away villagers who might be hanging around trying to protect their maize fields. Finally, the ribbed mock turtleneck collar hides her problem neck while providing added warmth in the cold waters of the river.

Fiber choice was dictated by function in this case. Most natural fibers were out of the question because of the fact that they’d be immersed in water so much of the time. So I knit the entire outfit from Lion Brand’s Micro Spun, which is 100% acrylic. It’s very soft, which makes it perfect for Harriet’s sensitive skin, but it’s also very splitty which makes it a knitter’s nightmare. However, the goal after all is to please your client. And as you can tell from the huge smile on her face, Harriet loves her new outfit!

Sincerely,

Linda

Our rustic yet contemporary logs beautifully enhance the theme here, set into an alcove in a chimney breast. Client's image.

As per client's request, she wanted cake to be the same theme as party invites and party supplies... It was such a cute theme and I enjoyed making it but the spots on the giraffe are a bit too thick :(.

We managed to get to the client's house on time. Maybe I should have chosen another sweater, there's alot of green in this room!

It comes in 1 color or 2 colors, depending on the client's preference. We have lots of colors to choose from. Also the Excalibur Hybrid Paracord Bullwhip is reasonably priced!

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in South Woodford, Essex here are the details of the project.

The Colourful Garden in South Woodford, Essex

BRIEF:

This space was a fairly blank canvas, containing few features other than a lawn, an old log-roll raised bed, and a large, well constructed garden shed. The area adjoining the house had recently been block paved, and this was to be integrated into the design. The client wanted a bold and vibrant garden that functioned on several levels - including a football pitch for their children and a sociable area for the adults.

SOLUTION:

To accommodate the client’s love of colour, and in keeping with the style of the interior of the house, the design was based around blocks of vivid orange or blue, taking inspiration from the abstract artist, Mondrian. The existing shed and fruit tree were removed to allow the construction of main social area of the space.

This comprised an area of decking bordered on two sides by a long, L-shaped fixed bench seat, backed by lush planting in raised rendered block beds to create a relaxing, social focus to the space. Provision for al fresco dining was given with the inclusion of a large decking table, with a moveable decked box on casters providing seating for the client’s children.

The block paving directly outside the house was integrated into the rest of the garden with the addition of several rendered block planters of various heights and dimensions. These were painted either orange or blue on different surfaces and planted with tall architectural specimens or low ground covering plants to give variation to the heights and perspective at play in the space.

A high rendered block bed at the bottom of the garden provides a dramatic frame to space, and also serves as a sturdy goal for impromptu football matches. A further low raised bed running down the left hand side of the garden ties the back of the space into the main area. This bed terminates in a higher raised bed to the left of the decked area, which acts a frame for

a stunning stainless steel water wall.

Planting in the space is strong and architectural, and chosen for year round interest with the inclusion of bamboo, spiky cordylines, tall grasses, and orange and blue flowering plants such as hosta and crocosmia tying the planting into the

overall colour scheme.

A dramatic yet functional lighting scheme adds the finishing touches to the space. Brick lighting illuminates the lawn area,

with strong spotlights providing an overall wash to the garden while picking out selected specimen plants in the beds. Blue LED deck lights cuff the edge of the decking, giving an outline to the central entertaining area. Finally, three blue neon stick lights placed in the planters on the block paving provide an unusual, eye-catching, entrance to the space.

TESTIMONIAL:

"We would like to take this opportunity in thanking the whole team. From the very initial consultation with Kat, we managed to work together in the overall design of the garden. You have so many great and inspirational ideas we wish we had more space in our garden to use more of them!!! Then from the drawing to the actual implementation of the garden, taking on a

whole new identity. The space you provided is both great for the children and most importantly for the adult entertaining.

The general feedback from our friends and neighbours has been great. The whole team worked so hard through, sunshine, rain and a lot of wind all mixed together on some days. You managed to stick through it all and deliver us more than what we expected. We would like to thank you all and wish you all the very best of luck in the future."

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in Acton, London*. Here are the details of the project

Brief: The plot for this design was a mid-size family garden, which had recently benefited from the addition of a large sunroom on the back of the property. It was a fairly blank canvas, with nothing of note to be retained in the re-design. The garden had side access and worn boundary fences which required replacing. There was no clear brief other than that the design include a seating area and some lawn, and that the transition from sunroom to garden be fairly seamless.

Solution: The focus of this design was to create an exterior space that serves as an extension to the interior, featuring several distinct and versatile areas that can be adapted to a variety of uses.

The garden's boundaries were replaced with new fencing to provide a uniform and attractive backdrop to the transformation within, while the long sideway down the right of the house was renovated with the addition of attractive 'bamboo' slate tile flooring in a random lay pattern.

The first section of the space comprises a large area of Western Red Cedar decking adjoining the house, and offers ample room for entertaining, with a long L-shaped fixed-bench seat stretching width-ways across the space from the left-hand side to the centre. This was backed with a rendered block raised bed, planted with fragrant lavender and capped with 'bamboo' slate tile, to provide a sense of enclosure and separation from the rest of the garden.

A decked walkway running down the right hand side of the space provides access to a 'spa' area, featuring a large square hot tub housed upon a reinforced paved hard-standing and nestled between existing and additional trees, shrubs and foliage to provide a secluded and intimate area for bathing throughout the seasons. Hidden behind mature and new planting in the bottom left corner, a large shed provides ample storage for the client's garden accessories. The middle of the space has been given over to a large lawn edges with slate.

A purple and yellow planting scheme of soft, cottage-style evergreen shrubs and flowering perennials will help to bring year round lightness and subtle colouring to the space.

After-dark hot tub bathing is enhanced by several strings of pea-lights woven through the existing shrubbery. Deck lights demark the main area of decking and guide one's journey along the decked walkway. Finally, spot lights in the beds highlight certain area while providing a gentle wash throughout the space.

Testimonial: "After months of planning and a full year of having builders everywhere, we had finally got the house into good shape but the garden was a nightmare. It had been somewhat overgrown before the builders moved in, but after a year of being used as a builders yard, it needed shock treatment.

We needed help fast so we searched the web. We were looking for garden designers with creative ideas for smaller London gardens. We didn't want anything too traditional but at the same time, nothing too extreme.

Earth Designs fitted the bill and after a design session with Katrina, we engaged them for the project. They had offered us a design service only, but as we only had a 4 week window in which to complete the job, we gave them the whole project.

We had built a new extension with wide glass doors that opened out into the garden, so the brief to Earth Designs was to "bring the outside, inside" and create a strong link between the new room and the garden beyond. The actual garden space was not large so we wanted to use the space as an extension of the living space - to be an "outside room".

Monday 18th April and three very charming men arrived on our doorstep at 8.0am sharp. Arlo was the project manager, ably aided and abetted by Paul and Phillip. They worked brilliantly as a team and always hit all the deadlines. In particular they did a great job in working with our neighbours to ensure the whole project ran smoothly.

The first week involved clearing the site - no mean feat with 30-year-old ivy stems that looked more like tree trunks.

The second week involved levelling the garden, putting up new fencing, building the corner seating base and planters, plus marking out the garden shape. It was good to be able to make minor changes to the design on the ground at this stage. The hot tub arrived too and was winched into place for connection later.

Week 3 saw the decking and seating built.

Then in week four the turf arrived, the lawn went down and on the last day, Katrina arrived with a truckload of wonderful specimens (and Matt) and we had a wonderful time planting. Ground Force Mk II - a complete garden from start to finish in just 4 weeks!

There were a few things that needed to be sorted out after the main work was complete. Earth Designs were great about coming back until all was complete and finished.

Our thanks to Katrina, Matt, Arlo, Paul and Phillip for a great job, completed on time and on budget with a great looking result."

Another image in my Still Life series, a project for a client's website. Now you'll understand why I have been away. I have been working! I hope you enjoy this set, that I'll be uploading over the weekend and on Valentine's Day....certainly a departure from my usual landscapes and Old World scenes, but I thought I'd share them with you anyway.

This set of Still Lifes with flowers was a collaborative effort. The owner of the business and I worked together to create these little scenes that will appear as a slide show on the home page of her website when it is completed.

I added a touch of Diffuse Glow to this one. I like! (Check out the original version below.)
