Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in South Woodford, Essex*. Here are the details of the project
The Family Landscape Garden in South Woodford, Essex RM14
BRIEF:
Lawn, planting and privacy were considerations for the client in this small sub-urban garden. The brief was to create a garden that would accommodate the needs of the client’s child whilst being interesting to adults and usable for dining and entertainment. The solution would need to deal with the different levels and provide interest throughout the year.
SOLUTION:
This design makes maximum use of limited space by dividing the garden into two distinct areas.
The existing fences along all boundaries were removed and replaced with new fencing, upon which willow screens were fixed.
The main focal point of the space takes the form of a seating/dining area to the left hand side of the garden. Constructed from robust new treated railway sleepers, this area comprises an L-shaped fixed bench backed by a tall L-shaped raised bed and complimented by a freestanding table and low bench (also constructed from railway sleepers). This area screened from the rest of the garden by a rusted iron mesh trellis to the back of the raised bed. Flooring in this section and down the sideway is in stylish golden Iroko hardwood decking. The sideway itself features a tall stainless steel ‘monolith’ water feature, which can be viewed from all sides.
Access to the garden is provided by a set of decking steps from the patio door leading to a small rectangle of slate paving directly in front of the patio doors. Further decked steps lead from the paving to the second half of the space, which features a kidney shaped lawn bordered on one side by a curved granite sett path. This path leads to a 1.5m diameter granite sett paved circle in the bottom left corner of the garden, large enough to accommodate a café-style table and chairs or display a variety of pots or garden ornaments.
A child-friendly railway sleeper ‘growing’ bed was constructed behind the exposed side of the L-shaped raised bed and left un-planted for future use by the client’s child. Planting throughout the space was chosen to provide year round interest, including a mimosa in the left hand corner. The addition of long flowering herbaceous perennials ensures maximum colour throughout much of the year, while evergreen shrubs help give the garden backbone across the seasons. Climbing clematis planted around the boundaries will over time help to soften and obscure the fencing.
Lighting in the garden is simple yet comprehensive. The risers of each decking step are lit with small ‘micro led’ lights to safely guide the user into and out of the space. Net lighting on the mesh screen draws ones eye to the seating area, while stainless steel bollard lights placed at either end of the L-shaped bed the bench frame this section of the space. The stainless steel water feature is illuminated from both sides by spotlights fixed to the decking. Low-voltage spotlights throughout the planting beds give the garden a subtle, gentle glow.

Samuel-Novarro House
1928, Lloyd Wright architect.
Lloyd Wright was Frank’s eldest son, born in 1890. Wright met Louis Samuel through actor Ramon Novarro who had asked Wright to build him a Spanish Revival home (it was never realized). Samuel and Novarro met in dance class years earlier, and, by the middle of the 1920s, the former had become the actor’s personal assistant and business manager. By then, also, Novarro was Hollywood’s first Latin-American superstar, with his most popular role being the lead in 1925’s Ben-Hur.
For Samuel and his wife, Wright created an Art Deco/Mayanesque masterpiece, one that McGrew and Julian write “may be the most beautifully sited home in Los Angeles.” The four-level home was built into the side of a hill with concrete and oxidized copper throughout (even the floors are concrete). Nearly everything was incorporated in the first floor: dining room; living room; kitchen; the home’s sole bedroom; and the lounge which lead to the outdoor swimming pool.
In 1930, Novarro discovered Samuel had been embezzling from him. Not only was Samuel using the money to play the stock market (not a great move in the fall of 1929), put he was also using his client’s money to pay the mortgage on his Los Feliz home.

BRIEF:
The plot for this design was a mid-size family garden, which had recently benefited from the addition of a large sunroom on the back of the property. It was a fairly blank canvas, with nothing of note to be retained in the re-design. The garden had side access and worn boundary fences which required replacing. There was no clear brief other than that the design include a seating area and some lawn, and that the transition from sunroom to garden be fairly seamless
SOLUTION:
The focus of this design was to create an exterior space that serves as an extension to the interior, featuring several distinct and versatile areas that can be adapted to a variety of uses.
The garden's boundaries were replaced with new fencing to provide a uniform and attractive backdrop to the transformation within, while the long sideway down the right of the house was renovated with the addition of attractive 'bamboo' slate tile flooring in a random lay pattern.
The first section of the space comprises a large area of Western Red Cedar decking adjoining the house, and offers ample room for entertaining, with a long L-shaped fixed-bench seat stretching width-ways across the space from the left-hand side to the centre. This was backed with a rendered block raised bed, planted with fragrant lavender and capped with 'bamboo' slate tile, to provide a sense of enclosure and separation from the rest of the garden.
A decked walkway running down the right hand side of the space provides access to a 'spa' area, featuring a large square hot tub housed upon a reinforced paved hard-standing and nestled between existing and additional trees, shrubs and foliage to provide a secluded and intimate area for bathing throughout the seasons. Hidden behind mature and new planting in the bottom left corner, a large shed provides ample storage for the client's garden accessories. The middle of the space has been given over to a large lawn edges with slate.
A purple and yellow planting scheme of soft, cottage-style evergreen shrubs and flowering perennials will help to bring year round lightness and subtle colouring to the space.
After-dark hot tub bathing is enhanced by several strings of pea-lights woven through the existing shrubbery. Deck lights demark the main area of decking and guide one's journey along the decked walkway. Finally, spot lights in the beds highlight certain area while providing a gentle wash throughout the space.
TESTIMONIAL:
"After months of planning and a full year of having builders everywhere, we had finally got the house into good shape but the garden was a nightmare. It had been somewhat overgrown before the builders moved in, but after a year of being used as a builders yard, it needed shock treatment.
We needed help fast so we searched the web. We were looking for garden designers with creative ideas for smaller London gardens. We didn't want anything too traditional but at the same time, nothing too extreme.
Earth Designs fitted the bill and after a design session with Katrina, we engaged them for the project. They had offered us a design service only, but as we only had a 4 week window in which to complete the job, we gave them the whole project.
We had built a new extension with wide glass doors that opened out into the garden, so the brief to Earth Designs was to "bring the outside, inside" and create a strong link between the new room and the garden beyond. The actual garden space was not large so we wanted to use the space as an extension of the living space - to be an "outside room".
Monday 18th April and three very charming men arrived on our doorstep at 8.0am sharp. Arlo was the project manager, ably aided and abetted by Paul and Phillip. They worked brilliantly as a team and always hit all the deadlines. In particular they did a great job in working with our neighbours to ensure the whole project ran smoothly.
The first week involved clearing the site - no mean feat with 30-year-old ivy stems that looked more like tree trunks.
The second week involved levelling the garden, putting up new fencing, building the corner seating base and planters, plus marking out the garden shape. It was good to be able to make minor changes to the design on the ground at this stage. The hot tub arrived too and was winched into place for connection later.
Week 3 saw the decking and seating built.
Then in week four the turf arrived, the lawn went down and on the last day, Katrina arrived with a truckload of wonderful specimens (and Matt) and we had a wonderful time planting. Ground Force Mk II - a complete garden from start to finish in just 4 weeks!
There were a few things that needed to be sorted out after the main work was complete. Earth Designs were great about coming back until all was complete and finished.
Our thanks to Katrina, Matt, Arlo, Paul and Phillip for a great job, completed on time and on budget with a great looking result."

We just completed this stunning custom ring redesign. Inspired from our Laleli design, set with a client's tanzanite in our handmade 14k white gold ring, adorned with our 14k rose gold tulip undercarriage. LaLovely!
One of my more popular customs is Mid-Warp Skywarp. I get many requests for that custom, this one was an order for a Masterpiece Grade version.
I started with a (expensive) Masterpiece Ghost of Starscream figure. Most of the figure is cast in clear plastic, so I got lucky. The parts which weren't were cleverly painted over, to either appear clear or act as "visible" Skywarp parts. Because the clear plastic Takara used wasn't as clear as I'd prefer, I buffed, sanded and polished it making it shiny and clear... like glass.
Mid-Warp Skywarp also utilizes my easy tail fin modification. His "warping" effects were created using about 6 shades of blue; from navy all the way up to pure white. Skywarp also has an alternate face (flips to "warp mode" sneer) or traditional Decepticon red optics.
His base includes a very bright LED which aimed up illuminates all of Skywarps tasty clear parts.
Skywarp was originally a commission, however - due to circumstances beyond the client's control, the order was cancelled and... he's teleporting himself to ebay.
This commissioned piece is non-transforming as per the awesome client's request. Hot Rod is Masterpiece scale, and has masterpiece grade articulation. He began as Masterpiece Sideswipe, I modified the chest/hood, upper legs, forearms, shoulders, legs and combined parts from other figures, including G1 hot rod's back/spoiler and side exhaust pipes. Added blue LEDs for his eyes, a small pistol and hand painted the flames on his chest.
A super application of our decorative logs, used here in an alcove of an alpine lodge in London. A pop up experience in 2010, The Alpine Lodge, Shoreditch. Client's image.
Personally, I like to think of myself as a Cultural-Ethno SSI Advocate Sans Frontier.
My process. When I get a referral from a client’s counselor at the methadone clinic, I look over the intake paperwork & evaluate it for merit—is the client in treatment? When was her last clean UA? Is her doctor supportive of a disability claim? What does her counselor think? Then I arrange to meet with the client face to face.
Every time I meet with a client at a methadone clinic, they get a nice piece fruit. A tangerine, if they’re in season. Otherwise, have an apple, a pear, a nice grape, or perhaps a nectarine? While I don’t have any scientific studies to back up this outlandish notion, it’s my feeling that opiates knock out any spare vitamins that your body might have floating around in there, and since all my clients have just dosed when I see them, yeah, have some fruit. Generally, this simple act of giving food makes people feel like they’re dealing with a real person, who sees them as a real person. Hopefully, this will make them want to come back and see me next week, which can be a big hurdle in the methadone population.
If a client seems like a good candidate for SSI advocacy, and I have capacity, I sign them on. This involves a brief explanation of the process of applying for SSI: “It’ll take a while, it might take a few tries, it’ll depend on you developing a treatment history and seeing me every week. We’ll be dealing with a big dumb government bureaucracy that makes important decisions about peoples’ lives capriciously and randomly. We’ll give it our best shot, but I can’t promise you anything, as it’s really up to them. Are you with me? Great, let’s get started.“ Then we sign:
1. An advocacy agreement in which they promise to meet with me every week, and to meet with their counselor every two weeks. (Everybody blithely lies to me at this juncture.)
2. An SSA “Form 1696/Appointment of Representative” which allows me to advocate on their behalf with SSA. I always explain that I’m not going to collect a fee, and I won’t try to collect a direct payment from Social Security once they’re in pay. I sign those boxes on the form in front of them.
3. A rash of forms that SFDPH requires us to sign, in exchange for their funding of our SSI advocacy program.
4. A medical release which will allow me to talk to their doctors and request medical records.
From there on in, it’s a weekly ritual of checking in, filling out & submitting various forms for the application, collecting medical records, making sure that the client has access to Dr Shrink or other MH Tx. “I want you to take this Adult Disability Report form with you, fill out the parts that you can. But first, look, I’m crossing out this part at the top, where it asks for your name and your social. Because, you’re living on the street, this might get lost, and you don’t want that information to get into the wrong hands, right? Like, identity theft? But try to fill out what you can of the rest of this thing. Some of it will be easy—like this one: Are you right or left-handed? See, we already did one. Answer the easy ones. It’s also gonna ask you a bunch of stupid-ass questions that you’ve got no idea what they’re driving at. Don’t worry about it. Leave those blank, and when you come back to see me next Thursday, we’ll finish it together, okay? Just do the parts that you know. Don’t worry about not getting all the answers. Really. Whatever you can’t do, bring it back, we’ll work on it together. I’ve done a lot of these. It doesn’t have to be neat—I’m going to have to transcribe all of this into the computer eventually. Here--have a tangerine. Come see me next week, okay?”
Aside from that, I provide lots of other small services for my clients. A lot of them rarely talk to anybody from day to day. I listen to them. I try to get them to get into treatment if they’re not. I update their GA workers to keep them from getting kicked off GA-SSIP. If they have legal problems, I try to deal with them directly, or refer them to where they can get help. If they’re having problems with their methadone counselor or their SRO or their HOT worker, I try to address that.

Earth Designs Garden Design and Build were asked to created a landscape and propose garden design in South Woodford, Essex here are the details of the project.
The Colourful Garden in South Woodford, Essex
BRIEF:
This space was a fairly blank canvas, containing few features other than a lawn, an old log-roll raised bed, and a large, well constructed garden shed. The area adjoining the house had recently been block paved, and this was to be integrated into the design. The client wanted a bold and vibrant garden that functioned on several levels - including a football pitch for their children and a sociable area for the adults.
SOLUTION:
To accommodate the client’s love of colour, and in keeping with the style of the interior of the house, the design was based around blocks of vivid orange or blue, taking inspiration from the abstract artist, Mondrian. The existing shed and fruit tree were removed to allow the construction of main social area of the space.
This comprised an area of decking bordered on two sides by a long, L-shaped fixed bench seat, backed by lush planting in raised rendered block beds to create a relaxing, social focus to the space. Provision for al fresco dining was given with the inclusion of a large decking table, with a moveable decked box on casters providing seating for the client’s children.
The block paving directly outside the house was integrated into the rest of the garden with the addition of several rendered block planters of various heights and dimensions. These were painted either orange or blue on different surfaces and planted with tall architectural specimens or low ground covering plants to give variation to the heights and perspective at play in the space.
A high rendered block bed at the bottom of the garden provides a dramatic frame to space, and also serves as a sturdy goal for impromptu football matches. A further low raised bed running down the left hand side of the garden ties the back of the space into the main area. This bed terminates in a higher raised bed to the left of the decked area, which acts a frame for
a stunning stainless steel water wall.
Planting in the space is strong and architectural, and chosen for year round interest with the inclusion of bamboo, spiky cordylines, tall grasses, and orange and blue flowering plants such as hosta and crocosmia tying the planting into the
overall colour scheme.
A dramatic yet functional lighting scheme adds the finishing touches to the space. Brick lighting illuminates the lawn area,
with strong spotlights providing an overall wash to the garden while picking out selected specimen plants in the beds. Blue LED deck lights cuff the edge of the decking, giving an outline to the central entertaining area. Finally, three blue neon stick lights placed in the planters on the block paving provide an unusual, eye-catching, entrance to the space.
TESTIMONIAL:
"We would like to take this opportunity in thanking the whole team. From the very initial consultation with Kat, we managed to work together in the overall design of the garden. You have so many great and inspirational ideas we wish we had more space in our garden to use more of them!!! Then from the drawing to the actual implementation of the garden, taking on a
whole new identity. The space you provided is both great for the children and most importantly for the adult entertaining.
The general feedback from our friends and neighbours has been great. The whole team worked so hard through, sunshine, rain and a lot of wind all mixed together on some days. You managed to stick through it all and deliver us more than what we expected. We would like to thank you all and wish you all the very best of luck in the future."

LAWYERS FOR LAWYERS Petition regarding Nasrin Sotoudeh to the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran با ترجمه فارسی
The Hague, 26 November 2012
Excellency,
The Dutch Lawyers for Lawyers Foundation (‘ Stichting Advocaten voor Advocaten ’) has repeatedly expressed our grave concerns about the current situation of our colleague Nasrin Sotoudeh. On 16 November 2012 we sent you a request to discuss her situation and we referred to the necessity of the application of the United Nations Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers. However, we were informed that you would not be able to meet with us on short notice.
During the past months Ms. Sotoudeh has been subjected to several restrictions that violate her basic human rights and amount to unequal treatment of her as a prisoner. As a consequence Ms. Sotoudeh started her hunger strike on 17 October 2012, 47 days ago. Since her health is deteriorating severely, we feel that our last resort to bring her situation under your attention is to present you with this petition along with a lawyers’ presence outside of your Embassy.
Therefore, we urge the Iranian authorities to:
1. create conditions under which Nasrin Sotoudeh will be able to end her hunger strike, entailing among other things allowing weekly face-to-face visits by her son, daughter and husband and lifting the travel ban that has been imposed on her husband and daughter;
2. assure that the international human rights treaties to which Iran is a Party as well as the United Nations Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers, adopted in 1990 with the support of Iran, will be fully respected and fulfilled with respect to N asrin Sotoudeh.
Once more we would like to remind you of Iran’s obligations under the Basic
Principles on the Role of Lawyers. 1 As stated in our earlier letter this includes:
– Governments shall ensure that lawyers (a) are able to perform all of their professional functions without intimidation, hindrance, harassment or improper interference; (b) are able to travel and to consult with their clients freely both within their own country and abroad; and (c) shall not suffer, or be threatened with, prosecution or administrative, economic or other sanctions for any action taken in accordance with recognized professional duties, standards and ethics.’
– Where the security of lawyers is threatened as a result of discharging their functions, they shall be adequately safeguarded by the authorities. 3
– Lawyers shall not be identified with their clients or their clients’ causes as a result of discharging their functions.4
We will continue to monitor Nasrin Sotoudeh’s case closely and will continue to express our grave concerns should her situation not improve. We remain at all times available to meet with you at your earliest convenience to discuss these issues more extensively.
We utterly hope that your good will and sense of justice will prevail.
Please accept, Sir, the assurances of our highest esteem,
Phon van den Biesen President of Lawyers for Lawyers
Adrie Van de Streek Executive Director

LAWYERS FOR LAWYERS URGENTLY REQUESTS FAIR AND EQUAL TREATMENT FOR IMPRISONED IRANIAN TOP LAWYER NASRIN SOTOUDEH
THE HAGUE, 26 NOVEMBER 2012 Iranian Embassy Crossing Hogeweg and Duinweg from 10.45 a.m. through 11.30 a.m.
The Dutch organization Lawyers for Lawyers (L4L, www.lawyersforlawyers.nl) will be heading a group of Lawyers on Monday 26 November 2012 at 11 a.m. in front of the Iranian Embassy in order to hand over a petition to the Iranian Ambassador in The Netherlands, his Excellency Mr. Gharibabadi.
This step is set on behalf of an Iranian top-lawyer, Ms. Nasrin Sotoudeh, who is currently in prison in Teheran. She was sentenced to a six-year term in prison after she had spent many years defending activists and journalists and after she became a leading lawyer in cases of child abuse and women’s rights. In 2010 Ms. Sotoudeh was representing Zahra Bahrami, a Dutch-Iranian dual citizen charged with security offenses. Ms. Sotoudeh has been charged with “activities against national security” and “propaganda against the regime.” Please see the attached fact-sheet for additional information.
Currently, while imprisoned, Ms. Sotoudeh receives a special treatment: until last week, she has been held in isolation, while her husband was not allowed to visit her; her children are barred from visiting her as well or are allowed only very sporadic visits for extremely limited time-slots. Her husband is not allowed to travel abroad, nor is her eldest daughter.
Ms. Sotoudeh’s protesting against this special treatment did not lead to any positive result. Therefore, she went on hunger strike on 17 October 2012 and is set to continue this hunger strike until she and her family will receive fair and equal treatment.
Lawyers for Lawyers is very concerned about Ms. Sotoudeh’s rapidly deterring health situation. “Human Rights Lawyers do not belong in prison in the first place, and under all circumstances they are entitled to decent and equal treatment like any other prisoner”, says Phon van den Biesen, President of Lawyers for Lawyers. “Apart from that, no prisoner should be punished by seeing her husband and family punished.” Therefore, Lawyers for Lawyers requests the Iranian Ambassador to transmit its request for decent and equal treatment of Nasrin Sotoudeh to the Authorities in Teheran, so she will be able to end her hunger strike
on the shortest possible notice. Lawyers for Lawyers reminds the Iranian authorities that Iran has adopted the United Nations Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers, which instructs governments to protect lawyers that are discharging of their professional duties and to not identify them with their clients or their client’s causes.

Fact Sheet Nasrin Sotoudeh, Iran.
As a human rights lawyer, Nasrin Sotoudeh has defended many of the human rights activists who were arrested after the presidential elections in June 2009. She defended Shirin Ebadi, the human rights lawyer and Nobel laureate who co-founded the Defenders for Human Rights Center (DHRC). She also acted as lawyer for the Iranian-Dutch Zahra Bahrami, who was executed in Iran on 29 January 2011. Next to that she has fought diligently for equal rights for women and the abolishment of the death penalty for persons who committed crimes below eighteen years of age.
On 28 august 2010, members of the intelligence service searched Sotoudeh’s office and home. Furthermore, her assets were frozen. On September 4, 2010, she was arrested.
On January 9, 2011, Nasrin Sotoudeh was sentenced by Branch 26 of the Islamic Revolution Court to 11 years of imprisonment, on charges of “acting against national security”, “propaganda against the system”, “collusion and gathering with the aim of acting against national security” and “membership in an illegal organisation” (DHRC). Furthermore she was banned from practicing law and traveling abroad for 20 years. On 14 September 2011, this sentence was reduced by the Appeal Court to 6 years imprisonment and a 10-year ban on practicing law.
After the sentence was announced, Sotoudeh’s husband was summoned to appear in the prosecutor’s office in the Evin Prison, where he was arrested on 16 January 2011 and held in detention for one night. It is unclear what he is charged with, but it is believed that his arrest is linked to remarks he made in interviews he gave in connection with the case against his wife.
On July 11, 2012, Sotoudeh’s 12-year-old daughter was summoned by authorities and informed that she was banned from traveling outside the country.
In September and October 2012, Sotoudeh’s visitation day in the Evin prison was changed from Sunday to Wednesday. This was done without any legitimate ground being provided by the prison authorities. Furthermore she was only allowed to see her family members from behind a glass wall. In reaction to these measures, on 17 October 2012, Nasrin Sotoudeh went on hunger strike to protest against the above described harassment by the judicial authorities towards her family. After she went on hunger strike, her visitation day was changed back to Sunday. Her family members had been denied the right to visit her for a few weeks, except on November 12 when Sotoudeh was allowed to see her children face to face, although only for a few minutes and in the presence of the prison guards.
Following her hunger strike, Sotoudeh was placed in solitary confinement from October 31st until November 19.
On Wednesday the 21st of November Nasrin Sotoudeh’s husband declared that he was allowed to see Sotoudeh for a few minutes on 20 November. Sotoudeh is emaciated due to the 5 weeks of hunger strike. Even though her husband tried to convince her to break her hunger strike, Sotoudeh told him that she will continue the hunger strike until the restrictions on visits of her family members are lifted, and the harassment by the judicial authorities towards her family ends.
Nasrin Sotoudeh was one of the three nominees for the Martin Ennals Award 2012.
In November 2012 Nasrin Sotoudeh was awarded the Sakharov Price for Freedom of Thought by the European Parliament.

This morning, a group of Dutch lawyers gathered for an hour in front of the Islamic Republic of Iran's embassy in Hague, Netherlands and protested against the imprisonement of Nasrin Sotoudeh, the incarcerated Iranian human rights lawyer in Evin prison. The protesters had prepared a written statement to submit to the IRI officials at that embassy but it was refused. These Dutch lawyers are urging others to continue protest in other capital cities in Europe.

Cantoni Atlanta designer Kohl Sudnikovich transformed his client’s outdated living room into a bright and inviting space inspired by the home’s sweeping bay views in St. Petersburg, Florida. After removing the entry, kitchen and dining room walls to create an open floor plan and enrich the living spaces with outdoor light, the living room, which was formerly paneled with mirrored walls and wooden ceilings, was transformed in modern oasis that is the couple’s new favorite space in their home.
