Most of the trash collected by my partner and me during the International Coastal Cleanup dive at Eastern Point Beach today. The dive equipment in the back, the garbage bag and the yellow bag were not pulled out of the water, everything else was (well not the stuff that's in the black garbage bag, that was collected by another diver).The yellow lift bag in the picture has 50 pounds of lift and was just enough to make the bag all this crap was in light enough I could lift and shift it along the bottom. But not enough to actually raise it off the bottom.

This cleanups and several other re are running in April will be in conjunction with the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay’s Annual Project Clean Stream Event.
Our cleanups are part of an ongoing effort clean the entire stream by 2014 in preparation for the War of 1812 Bicentennial Celebration. (Bread and Cheese Creek has been noted as one of the possible highlighted location on the Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail) The creek played a rather significant part in the Battle of North Point which took place on September 12, 1814. Both the American and British Troops camped along its banks. It is rumored that the young heroes Daniel Wells (19) and Henry McComas (18) used the stream channel to sneak up on British General Robert Ross killing him with their muskets before being killed in return fire. This important part of our history should not be left the eyesore it currently is.
Remember, there plenty of ways for volunteers to participate. We will need every type of person of every ability level to contribute and assist with the Clean Up. Though it is true we will need people to dig out shopping carts and haul trash to the dumpsters, we can use people to run water, food, tools, and trash bags (both empty and full) to individuals in the creek. People to sort recyclables from the debris removed. People will be needed to work the grills as well as many other less strenuous activities. We are also authorized to sign-off on Community Service and Service Learning Hours for students. The more people we have, the easier the work will be for everyone. Please feel free to pass this information on to other who might be interesting in helping as well. As my grandfather always said, “Many hands makes the work light”. We run our cleanups as a family event with all age groups welcome by developing plenty of ways for volunteers to participate.

The Patapsco Heritage Greenway hosted a cleanup day at the Avalon Area to continue restoration efforts from the flood in late July.
Living Lands and Waters (LLW), an Illinois-based non-profit dedicated to cleaning up America’s rivers, spent nearly two weeks hosting volunteer clean-up days on the Delaware River. Held Aug. 20 through Sept. 2, the clean-up effort was sponsored in part by Philadelphia Water and resulted in the removal over 35,000 pounds of trash. Here, volunteers from Philadelphia Water and the Delaware River Basin Commission join the LLW crew for a Sept. 1 clean-up just north of the Betsy Ross Bridge that netted 26 large bags of recyclable bottles and 17 30-gallon bags of non-recyclable trash. I woke up this morning to three inches of new fluffy snow. I knew Suzy wanted to get pictures of her roses with falling snow before they completely shrivel away. Notice the roses are stuck in the snowbank, she accidently broke the vase and need to clean up the glass. You can see in the picture where the picket fence was broken from the falling ice dam earlier in the week.
We lucked out with the snowfall, Minneapolis received 17 inches of snow, we only received about 2-3 inches.
Students, faculty, staff and community members were out in Galesburg on Saturday, April 27 during the Day of Service. A large group worked to clean up a part of Galesburg as part of the Great American Cleanup and Earth Day 2013.

I saw a MungMonster tag on that wall in the same red paint. Whatever paint he/she/it used apparently isn't as easy to remove from glass as the black spray paint. Not sure if that is a bug or a feature. Somewhat relatedly, it is hard not to feel for the protesters when police response is clearly fucked up, but the trashing of the city is undermining my ability to fully sympathize.

Cleaning up the Dominguez Channel at Artesia Transit Center. Over 14,000 volunteers took part in Coastal Cleanup Day in Los Angeles County, cleaning up beaches, parks, alleys, creeks, highways and storm drains at 69 different sites. Over 300,000 pounds of debris and recyclables were removed by the various environmental organizations, community groups, families, local businesses, faith-based organizations and students that took part. Today (7/29/11) we removed the huge blockage behind Willow Road near the ARC. It consisted of one large Ash Tree which had toppled into the stream, but was still deeply rooted in the back. Several smaller trees which had given way due to erosion had also toppled into Bread and Cheese Creek causing a huge dam. This dam was not only worsening the erosion but also causing flooding in the properties of the residents nearby. Two members of BRRC, two of their summer students and four members of Clean Bread and Cheese Creek worked hard to remove the blockage. The BRRC also brought their Argos to assist. BRRC and their students worked with us until about noon when their Argos began to overheat. The four of us from CB&CC continued to work until 3:30 to ensure the dam was completely cleared. We were very grateful for the assistance of the BRRC and their Argo without them breaking up this absolutely huge blockage would have taken much longer.
This blockage was removed in preparation for our cleanup of Bread and Cheese Creek in the North Point Area where we will be conducting a cleanup on Saturday, September 24, 2011 from 8 AM - 2 PM.
