"The Folsom Dam Auxiliary Spillway project is an approximately $900-million cooperative effort between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation that will help the Sacramento region achieve 200-year level of protection, meaning there will be a one-in-200 chance for flooding in any given year.

"Alamo and Painted Rock Dams are very important to the watershed and Arizona's overall flood risk management," said Gibbs. "The professionalism of our dam tenders at each of those locations and their ability to build great relationships with State Parks, as well as other agencies throughout the state, prepares us to work together in the event of extreme rain events to protect people, structures and agriculture."
Public safety is the Corps' number one priority. Flood risk management structures reduce risk, but they don’t eliminate it.
"Our dams and the surrounding land is very well maintained, added Gibbs. "The District is proud of our professionals who work hard and are dedicated to our critical mission in these remote locations. I am honored to serve alongside them."
Because of the isolation, the Corps provides two houses on each project site.
Painted Rock was completed in 1959, Alamo a decade later. In total, the Corps owns and operates nearly 700 dams nationwide.

Mr. Michael Connor, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works along with Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur and U.S Army Corps of Engineers leadership, Brig. Gen. Kimberly Peeples and Lt. Col. Colby Krug spent time at Port Clinton Harbor, Port Clinton, OH discussing the important role the harbor plays to support the Great Lakes Navigation System.
Port Clinton Harbor supports commercial ferry service to Put-InBay and Middle Bass Islands in addition to 78 seasonal charter fishing boats generating approximately $1.2M in annual revenue. Most recently project partners completed a project that removed invasive plant species and created acres of wetland habitat.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District dispatched personnel and resources Aug. 14 to assist the White Mountain Apache community with its limited flood risk minimization measures.
Anne Hutton, the District's chief of Emergency Management explained that the project was made possible through a provision of PL 84-99 that allows the Corps to provide technical and direct assistance in advance of a flood event when we can show an imminent threat of unusual flooding.
"A series of four storm-related floods June 28 - 29, July 2 and Aug. 11 - with debris flows from the burned watershed upstream - prompted a release of emergency funding for flood fighting measures," said Hutton.
The Cedar Creek Fire burned approximately 46,000 acres of the Fort Apace Reservation between June 17 and July 2.
"Because of the greater than average fire-related flood risk this storm season, the Corps has identified that risk reduction measures are most needed for the lower streambank areas of Cedar Creek," added Hutton.
Flood fighting measures will include strategic installation of approximately 1.5 miles of temporary protective barriers along the Cedar Creek.
The Corps provides engineering services to respond to national and natural disasters to minimize damages and help in recovery efforts.

The Dam consists of an earthfill dam 700 feet long and 92 feet high; an ungated circular concrete conduit 450 feet long and three feet in diameter; and a chute spillway edged in rock with a 100-foot-long concrete weir. The weir’s crest elevation is 16 feet lower than the top of the dam.

"The Folsom Dam Auxiliary Spillway project is an approximately $900-million cooperative effort between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation that will help the Sacramento region achieve 200-year level of protection, meaning there will be a one-in-200 chance for flooding in any given year.
The project will construct an auxiliary spillway to compliment the functions of the main Folsom Dam. It will allow water to be released earlier and more safely from Folsom Lake during a high water event.
The spillway will include an 1,100-foot-long approach channel that will funnel the water from the lake into the spillway; a control structure with six submerged gates that will be controlled in coordination with the gates on the main dam to control water releases; a 3,027-foot-long spillway chute that transports the water from the control structure to the American River below; and a stilling basin that will slow the racing water back to normal flow levels that the river channel will be able to withstand.
