I had taken the Daisy in the garden for today, or it was one of my ideas, until I saw how this had come out. I liked them both, so Graham helped out and choose this one.

At least now I can throw the boxes away.

Sorry though, all the chocolates have now gone, other than some chocolate money that we haven't finished yet.

Meet me on the other side

Just in case you didn't get bombarded enough with Valentine's Day stuff, here are some heart-shaped boxes of chocolate! I love chocolate but I've eaten too much in the last month. When I see a box in front of me, I can't help but keep on eating. ;p

Just to clarify after reading the comments, all of these boxes are not mine! I just took a picture in a store that sells chocolate. ;p

From the marvellous German publication Archiv für Buchgewerbe und Gebrauchsgraphik, a long running trade journal looking at book design and commercial art, comes this advertising insert from 1925. It is for the Leipzig printing concern of Berger & Wirth who also had brancesh in Berlin, Barmen, Hamburg, Amsterdam and Budapest. Specialising in offset printing the advert shows the wonderful array of packaging and labelling they produced for the 'Hansi" brand of pralines and chocolates.

Hansi, with the once familiar 'Hansi" mascot, his rucksack and five bars of chocolate seen at the top of the advert, was manufactured by the Rüger company, founded in 1858 by Otto Rüger and based at Lockwitzgrund near Dresden until the company appears to have closed in 1932. The advert itself is wonderfully brilliant with a depth and lustre to the printing that scanning does not wholly pick up.

Paris candy boxes

In 1926 another railway poster and commercial artist was used - Fred Taylor. The subject were the extensive staff facilities in place in Bournville that Cadbury's were so very proud of - the paternalistic company in its model works with model village. This is a lovely illustration of highly decorated boxes of chocolates being filled and weighed.

Some crackers here - and for once some clues as to the designers.

Both the Culmak and Pulvex packages are by Milner Gray and Jospeh Revill of the Industrial Design Partnership. The IDP was an importnat link in the story of British industrial design and Milner Gray went on to be a part of the formation of the DRU.

The Rowntree's "Carefree" and "Cracknel Block" chocolate packing was by the agency J Walter Thompson.

The continental packaging are by Prof O H W Hadank, for Kaloderma and the Haus Neuerberg packs, and Prof C O Czescha for the L Wolff cigar packaging.

"Good things from the factory in a garden" - Cadbury's, never slow to promote the image of the works in their factory village. Milk Tray chocolates are still an important brand and retains the basic packet colour - the deep purple colour adopted for the Dairy Milk collections.

In 1933 Cadbury's seem to have had some qualms about the quality of their packaging - particularly chocolate boxes - that had become collectively known as being "chocolate box" in style. These included old established 'artists' and illustrators such as Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac as well as more contemporary names such as C R W Nevinson and Marc Gertler along with Dame Laura Knight. A brave experiment as it is thought the 'boxes were not particularly successful in the shops.

This is an "Aztec" motif box top that I designed for www.MajesticChocolates.com

It has been approved. I have 2 more box ideas in the works.

The boxes are plain pine from a craft store, sanded then tripled painted with hi-gloss paint. A double coating of stone sealer is applied as the finishing touch. Truffles would be nice in here, don't ya think?

And it will smash you round the face with giant heart-shaped chocolates whether you are single, in a relationship, or just out of one.
