"WHAT? Why are you guys talking about the PT Cruiser?"
We can almost picture your puzzled faces.
To explain requires two authors.
First, the naive, idealistic thoughts of a fellow who loved the gamble Chrysler took in going retro as the century turned.
Then a more realistic perspective will be offered when we "Ask a man who owned one".
As the twentieth century came to an end and fears about Y2K were festering, Mopar went out on a limb to perk up car sales. The company looked back to the classic era and Art Deco design for styling cues of their new models. The Plymouth Prowler was a factory street rod, with both 1950s hot rod culture sensibilities and 1930s style. The Dodge Viper looked a lot like a Ferrari from another era. The bold grill they put on Dodge Ram trucks was another example of looking back with a new perspective.
Of course, the best example of this Deco lineup has to be the PT Cruiser. Chrysler took the boring little Neon platform and gave it some pizzaz! Designed to help Chrysler meet the fleet gas mileage regulations set out by the government, the little truck was an instant classic, attaining almost immediate cult status. It even sold around the world. 10,000 went to Japan where some became taxis for the Japanese Disneyland.
There was even a Mercedes diesel engine available for the European built models.
Bryan Nesbitt gets the credits for the design which was enough of a success to inspire Chevy to build the HHR which was also a Nesbitt creation.
Announcer: "Now, over to you Kenneth!"
Umm… Is this on? Can you hear me?
As a man who owned one, all I can say is "It was fun while it lasted!"
Actually at the time when I got it, it seemed like the way to go. I wanted better gas mileage than I had gotten with my previous vehicle and I wanted just enough cargo space to be able to haul the tons of video and still photography equipment that follows me almost everywhere. It served me well for about 10 years.

At this point, it's unknown whether a couple of customers both reached for the last Pie Faced Showdown, or an impatient guest was trying to get a Disney Princess Carriage off the overstock shelf all alone, someone's on the floor clogging up aisle 35.
That HHR is going to make the naughty list, because while that Volvo is patiently waiting for the Fire-Medic to pass, it steals the parking spot.

This sign points to 814 East, which is technically correct, but this way is actually SR 849. Until the mid-1980s, Atlantic Boulevard did not span the Turnpike, so this was the access road that led to it.
(Update: sign replaced in August 2013.)

This Chevy HHR was at Best Buy, Scosche did a good job. If you want to talk about HHRs you can go to chevyhhr.net
With the HHR discontinued, Chevy now rebadges the Nissan NV200 to serve the small commercial vehicle role in the lineup.

Chevy wanted people to see what a "pimped out" HHR would look like. Chopping the roof and custom interior were the biggies.

Have any of you guys seen these cars out in the wild? They look similar to Chrysler PT Cruisers, but they're Chevrolets. I believe the back of the car said "HHR".

This is the car we "lived" out of for 9 or so days. Our first day we were very neat and tidy but then realized we could just throw stuff in the backseat for easy access.

honestly, if the dealer told me ONE MORE TIME that the chevy hhr was "just like the mini, except four doors and nobody made a movie about it"? i was going to slug him.
it's a cute family chevy. but a chevy. and a family car nonetheless. i wonder if archie misses me right now?
I was driving this logging road looking for birds when I came upon this rather fun section of road. I parked and walked back up the hill to take this shot.
I had my doubts.
it's got a small windshield, I feel like I'm driving a milk truck.
Also, after owning a grey-market "Lemon" PT Cruiser for just over a year and having it in the shop more than a month in total, I cringed.
It was a nice smooth ride. Good control. A few guts, not much, about as much as you could expect from a 4-banger. Stereo was even nice, and had an input for my iPod. Thus, serene trip despite lots of hard rain.
One of my favourite cars in the show, Chevy HHR with an awesome black and orange paintjob. Me want one!
This is the first pic I took in a series.
Notice Speed and RPM - I am sitting and idling.
At the end of the series, the display read "AV SPEED 66 MPH"
Is it just me, or should average speed be computed only when the vehicle is moving? I mean, from an engineering perspective, this is cool, because it's relational to the engine being on.

While at Target in Trumbull, CT, we were pulling into the parking lot when we went to pull by an SUV that was parked and being loaded. A young lady (high schooler) was just getting out, when she opened the door, and suddenly the SUV started going backwards. (She apparently had thought the car was in P when it was in R.) The girl tried to climb back into the car, but fell down. Our car had already stopped for some pedestrians. He car kept on going until her mother ran around the car and got it stopped. Thank God, she was safe (the open door had just missed her). But the SUV's door was broken backwards, and the side was scratched. It scratched up Mom's new Chevrolet HHR's side and the rear bumper.
