Was at Mylapore today to attend the Mylapore Festival which is conducted by Sundaram Finance every year. All great cities have a soul. Mylapore can rightfully claim to be the soul of Chennai city here in south India. It pre-dates Chennai's birth and has seen the city grow as it has, its own. Mylapore retains the look and feel of an old neighborhood, the culture and heritage typically south Indian, yet it has not escaped development. This place then is also just the setting for a cultural festival. That is why the Sundaram Finance sponsored Mylapore Festival is organised every year in January, on the eve of the local harvest festival of Pongal.
The team balloon. Chennai's IPL (Indian Premier League) T20 (Twenty-20 - a new, shortened version of the shortened version of the 5 day cricket game) team is called Super Kings.
The IPL is to cricket what Clubs are to football. Different cities form their own team, composed of a few local players, some international players and fight it out for supremacy in exciting matches.
The matches bring with them lots of eyeballs and money, which is then ploughed back into the game to build infrastructure, coach new players and stuff.

This shot was taken on a holiday in the famous marina beach in Chennai, India.
About the Marina:
A Walk along the Marina: Chennai's seashore hosts one of India's largest urban beaches, stretching for 13km (8miles) along the city's eastern flank. The marina, connecing Fort St George with San Thome Basilica almost 5 kms away, was built by Mounstuart Elphinstone grant-Duff, the governor between 1881 and 1886. Described by architectural historian Philp Davies as " One of the most beautiful marine Promenads in the World". it is a favourite place for chennai's citizens to escape the humid heat of the city and enjoy the sea breeeze. The walk along Kamarajar Salai ( earlier known as south beach Road) takes in parks, tree-lined cobbled streets, spectacular colonical and Indo-Saracenic Buildings.
Anna Park: The Walk starts from the Victory War Memorial which marks the north end of Kamarajar Salai. This Memorial originally commemorated the victory of the allied armies during World War I and was later dedicated to the memory of those soldiers from the Madras Presidency who lost their lives in World War-ii. To its south, in Anna park, is the Anna Samadhi, a Memorial erected in honor of CN Annadurai, the former Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, who introduced significant political and social reforms in the state. Further south is the MGR samadhi a commemorative garden with gateways and pathways built in honour of the popular Tamil film icon and Chief Minister, MG Ramachandran. An array of souvenir shops and eateries can be found along this stretch of the beach, attracting tourists from the rest of the state, particularly interesting is the sunday market with its curious jumble of goods.
North Marina: Across Kamarajar Salai is a series of imposing red brick buildings built in a combination of architectural styles, which include Indian and Moorish features. The Indo-Sarcenic Madras University was founded in 1857, making it one of the oldest universities in India. An architectural marvel the Senate House was designed by Robert Chisholm in a mixture of Byzantine and Saracenic styles. This became the headquarters of Madras University in 1879. These buildings now stand in what was once the sprawling estate of the old chepauk palace. This splendid indo Saracenic structure, on Wallajah Road, was once the home of the Nawab of Arcot. Though the palace was built in 1768, Chisholm added the extensions, including the tower that once connected the two wings. It now houses government offices. Chepauk Stadium, Chennai's famous cricket ground, lies behind the palace. Further down the road is Presidency College, the first institution in South India for higher education founded in 1840. This rather austere structure has ribbed dome with four clocks on its surface. Among the famous alumni of the college are the first Indian governor-general C.Rajagopalachari and the Nobel Prize- winning Physicists, CV Raman and his nephew, S Chandrasekhar.
South Marina: Further South, an impressive landmark on Kamarajar Salai is the statue. This sculpture was created by Debi Prasad Roy Chowdhary, who became the first Indian Principal of the Madras School of Arts and Crafts in 1929. West of the main road, off Annie Besant road, is the Ice House. In the 1840s, this circular building with a stone pineapple perched on its roof, was a storehouse for ice, which was imported all the way from New England. It was also the site from which Swami Vivekanda delivered his speeches when he visited the city. It has now been handed over to the Ramakrishna Mission which has plans to restore it. Further south is Queen Mary's College, today the Madras College for Women. Opened in July 1914, this was Chennai's first women's College. A bust of the queen still graces the entrance of the building. An imposing lighthouse marks the southern end of the Marina.

In Chennai's Parry's corner, is the crumbling old church of the Armenians. The Armenians were once a very big part of British Madras. But, over time, they either died out or were assimilated into the other Christian denominations...and all that's left of them is a church, in ruins.
I and a friend had wanted to do a little radio story on Madras' history, and had come knocking (quite literally) on the church's door. No one answered, but this girl was having a fun time trying to climb the little steps and the parapet of the church.

The National Art Gallery in the Museum complex can be considered the city’s first exhibition gallery. Built in Mughal-Jaipuri style with a pink sandstone façade, Chennai polished cement finish inside and marble flooring, it was designed by Henry Irwin who succeeded Chisholm to create many of the best-known public buildings of Chennai. The building originated as an exhibition hall for the Victoria Technical Institute, founded to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee and intended to help local craftsmen and nurture the traditional handicrafts. When Queen Victoria died, the VTI decided to create a memorial for her and a home for itself. And so was raised one of the most striking buildings in Chennai, built as the Victoria Memorial Hall and Technical Institute and opening its doors in 1909. When the Government took over the building during World War II, the VTI moved to Mount Road and has stayed put there.
After the War, the Central Government advocated a National Art Gallery in each of the four metros and the Victoria Memorial Hall consequently became Chennai’s National Gallery. Together, the neighbouring Gallery of Contemporary Indian Art, which opened in 1984, and the National Gallery have a valuable collection of paintings of the 19th and 20th Centuries, the only permanent art exhibit in town. The host of other small galleries that have sprung up in recent years offer short-term art exhibitions reflecting a growing interest in Art in Chennai as a medium of expression, as a piece of interior décor and as an investment.

Now the building is in dilapidated condition. The building is sealed as you see in another photograph and I see a board which warns the visitors not to sit or come near the building

Mount Rd, Madras.
There have been English-language newpapers in Madras since the 'Madras Courier' was first published on 12 October 1785. Over the decades, a long succession of English weeklies and dailies culminated in the establishment of 'The Madras Mail' on 15 December 1868. The Mail moved to these new premises in 1921 and went through a period of modernisation in the 1930s during twhich time it was considered to be one of the leading newspapers in the whole of British Asia no less. It continued to publish until 1981 when the paper closed down. These handsome premises have remained idle and local Madras historian and journalist S Muthiah has lead the call for the building to be preserved as a museum of journalism.
I credit S Mutiah for providing a lot of the historical detail behind Chennai's old buildings in his sterling works 'Madras Rediscovered' and the pictorial 'Madras that is Chennai'.

A beads stall at Chennai's Eliot's beach. These stalls showcase many multi color attractive beads ,necklaces, bracelets, anklets and many more made up of carved out stones. These stalls are usually run by people who are more or like nomads and mostly non-tamilians.It will seem so ironical that thgese people who sell these lovely colorful beads often lead a life of black and white owing to the poor living conditions. Yet everytime someone passes by them looking greedily at those beads, it brightens up their day . The next time I am sure I would like to add one of their smiling faces into the frame :)
