The night three years ago from today, in the Ghouta area of Damascus, was a truly unforgettable one, in which Assad's regime caused the massacre of over 1500 civilians with internationally banned chemical weapons. The young girl pictured here was one of the survivors, yet she, like all the other survivors of the brutal horror, was deeply scarred and shocked as a result of the events. As the photographer, it was the most difficult night of my life; I still remember how my hands were shaking uncontrollably as I was holding my camera.

May 25 2015; New York JFK. Parked on a mid-field taxiway after arrival from Paris CDG this morning, operating flight AF 22. The flight received a "chemical weapons threat" and was escorted by USAF fighters through US Air Space until safely landing at JFK.

Remains of one of the buildings at the Rhydymwyn Valley Works near Mold. This large site was used for the processing of poison gas munitions during WWII. The finished shells and bombs were stored in nearby tunnels.

I recently came across the original of this color slide I shot from the Staten Island Ferry in 1976, the Bicentennial year, of the World Trade Center ascending majestically above the New York skyline into the fading dusk. Looking at the towers now, it's hard not to reflect on the difference between this time in 2001 and the present, and how what presidents don't do is often as important as what they do.
9/11 was a shocking, terrible crime that haunts us to this day. Every nation on earth would have done its best to find and punish the perpetrators of such an attack. It doesn't follow that every nation would have quickly launched two wars that lasted more than a decade and threatened to permanently militarize the United States. That was a decision rushed into by fallible men and women who we now know made a mistake. If Pres. Bush had decided on a more focused response with broad international cooperation (the worldwide good will extended to America in response to the tragedy was real and powerful) the history of the world in the intervening years might have been a good deal less bloody and catastrophic.
In recent days, Pres. Obama faced another crisis and widespread pressure to rush into military action. It looked as if the US, Britain and France were about to act. Then the British Parliament blinked. That seemed to give the President second thoughts, and he also blinked, referring the use of military force to a Congress that didn't seem likely to approve it. And now we're seeing a possible diplomatic solution that's encouraging, though by no means a sure thing.
Pres. Obama has taken a lot of heat for his response to the chemical weapons attack in Syria, but his actions have been in keeping with other presidents who have stepped back from the brink. Eisenhower blinked. He seemed to dither when under pressure to help the French in Indochina, but by sending the proposal to Congress he effectively killed it. President Kennedy pulled back after the illegal Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba started, an invasion planned by the previous administration that he had unwisely allowed to go forward on the advice of his advisers. And in the Cuban Missile Crisis, he may have averted a nuclear holocaust by resisting pressure for a military strike, acting on a more conciliatory Soviet back channel communication, rather than their more bellicose public statements.
It's good to have a president who thinks twice before using force. I'm glad he did and hope something positive comes of this.

Selon Hannah Arendt, la préparation au totalitarisme a réussi lorsque les gens ont perdu le contact avec leurs semblables ainsi que la réalité qui les entoure: pensez-y !

Rimbaud is still relevant now that we are living a season in hell in a civilization that is moving towards a new world order: this communitarianism is already the basis of hundreds of new global rules and regulations that eliminate individual rights because this policy considers that individual rights and freedoms constitute a real threat to the security of the community; the messianic propaganda used reminds us of the dark days of Nazism or Communism. May 25 2015; New York JFK. The second flight to receive a "chemical weapons threat" today, Saudia flight 21 from Jeddah, sits on a taxiway while the aircraft is offloaded and inspected. Busy morning at JFK this Memorial Day.
Can public opinion in the US and around the world actually stop a senseless and dangerous military action before it takes place? Maybe. To all appearances, it looked as if the US, the UK and France were all set to launch the quick little military intervention in Syria they had cooked up, a punitive strike enforcing Pres. Obama's red line against chemical weapons. Then the British Parliament blinked. Pres. Obama suddenly reversed course and handed the matter over to the US Congress. And he had a little chat with Vladimir Putin at the G20 meeting.
The MoveOn.org vigil against Syrian bombing Monday night took place at a very fluid time. Based on an apparently off-the-cuff remark by John Kerry, the Russian foreign minister jumped in with a plan for Syria to turn its chemical weapons over to international supervision, a proposal that seemed to quickly gain real traction. At the same time, Harry Reid postponed Thursday's scheduled Senate vote.
As the vigil Monday night on the Capitol Square started to break up, this scene on upper State Street, complete with red lights, seemed to capture the moment when it seemed the rush to bomb Syria might actually be stopped. Will it really happen? Public opinion will be a real factor -- let your Senators and Representative know how you feel. And stay tuned for Pres. Obama's address to the nation tonight.

U.S. Army officers compete in teams of two during the Seneca Rocks Best Lieutenant Competition held by the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, New York, 29 Aug. 2018. The competition includes seven timed events, including how quickly they can don a protective mask and garments, which is meant to protect Soldiers from chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats. The competition is named after Seneca Rocks, West Virginia, which is where the 10th Mountain Division validated their mountain warfare skills prior to deploying to Italy during World War II.
