News out of the USA this week, apart from reports of The U.S. House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, gave us philosophical feedstock about the sentience of a chatbot or the personality, sensu stricto, of an elephant.
The conclusions were logical and reasonable. No, a chatbot is not sentient. There was a minor problem in this discourse that nobody set down any rules by which the posit could be tested. That a chatbot mimics psycho-social attributes does not make it sentient. True, we all do much the same, as culture dictates. A chatbot is just a bunch of code and a database. It can't do the things that a sentient organism does, say like this cuttlefish. It can't change its position in the environment, use a range of sensory inputs or make itself a cup of coffee if it gets a bit tired. OK, cuttlefish don't drink coffee, I just made that up like Trump and Stop the Steal, but it could chow down on one of those little fish in the background and feel happy and content with that outcome. I'm equally sure that the little ray who followed me along the shore in the Galapagos knew who it was, what it was up to and was curious about me. There may be bots looking at me now. Unlike true sentient lifeforms they, well to put it bluntly, are not lifeforms. Come back and talk to me about it when they can reproduce, maintain themselves or each other, create and consume their own energy, move away from danger and all the other things that sentient lifeforms do and they aren't on the end of a copper wire that can simply be unplugged.
Addressing the elephant in the room was different. Sentience wasn't an issue. Elephants rate on the sentience scale. They are right up there. But are they people? No. Elephants are elephants. If you asked them they might even want you to justify why they'd lower themselves to the status of humanity. The premise is simply one of arbitrary assignment of superiority. Trump thought he was above the Constitution of the United States of America, probably still does, and yet we know there are things bigger than base human behaviour which benefit the many over the few. Its the same with elephants and people. If we as a community don't care for elephants then we will proclaim their doom. If we protect an elephant from risks it doesn't know, but we do as people know them, we do great works. Acting as a Constitution does, we can likewise enrich and embrace the elephant in the room without leaving it to perish of its own devices.
