En tiempo de confinamiento hay que tener mucha calma. Todo pasará,espero.

Further on up the road, the 501 keeps trucking north towards Channing with a few scrap gons from Iron Mountain and a modest cut of pulpwood. These exact rails once carried the Milwaukee Road's lesser-known "Copper Country Limited", a secondary passenger service between Chicago and the northern reaches of Michigan's upper peninsula at Hancock that amazingly held on until the late 1960's.
Having just arrived from Green Bay this Milwaukee Road crewman climbs down from F7A 70C at Channing, Michigan late in the day on November, 9, 1978.
ELS SD40-2 #501 brings a cut of freight past the former MILW depot in Channing as they build their outbound cut for Crivitz.
With luck on our side on this cloudy morning, we found ELS SD9 1221, my main target to shoot on the ELS, leading a northbound train with ELS 400 to Channing Michigan. Here they run through the grown over mainline in the backwoods just before Channing.

Starting their day the Channing crew with 1221 pulls into the yard to begin the days work while they wait on mechanical to show up and fix the 502.
E&LS leased two almost new Conrail GP38-2s for a lengthy time in the early 1980s. Both are seen here with the 8260 and E&LS RS12 213 leading a Channing to Green Bay freight while 8273 and E&LS RS12 300 wait to follow on the Groveland Mine spur. The train of pellets out of the Groveland Mine will be interchanged to the C&NW at their Antoine yard in Iron Mountain for forwarding to Escanaba and will be one of the last as the mine had closed over 2 years earlier and the last of the stockpiled pellets was finally being hauled out.
Tom and Gerald tackle the Conundrum head on in Channing and make a final move to tie onto their train and head south, 8hrs old.

Edgewood Shopping Center located 2080 Channing Ave. in Palo Alto,CA. This shopping center constucted in 1958 was the sole center designed by well known mid-century architect Joseph Eichler. The anchor tenant was a Lucky Store which by the mid 1990's had become quite run-down. When it fell into the hands of Albertsons in 1999 nothing was remodeled and the center continued going downhill and by 2006 was largely vacant and by August 2006 was without a grocery store due to Albertsons closing. There have been plans for a redevelopment to occur at some point but as of March 2009 nothing has taken place to show that a renovation is in the works.
Here is the Lucky Store in 1985...

Have a great day!
Leased CR 8260 is ready to head south on the E&LS at Channing, August 16, 1981. Sorry about the depot shadow, I was waiting for them to pull and shoot them in sun this side of the depot but as the crew came out they spotted me and promptly wandered over where I was standing, basically on the shoulder of the highway and told me to "get the hell off the property". I was just a kid so beat a hasty retreat. I probably wasn't even on there property.
The Channing crew with the E&LS 502 arrived Pembine and started making a few switching moves at the wood yard north of the CN diamond. After picking up a couple cars they pulled to the south end of the various sidings and sat for a few minutes. I couldn't quite figure out what was up when the E&LS 501 with a Crivitz crew called out their arrival... so they were waiting for a meet! The Channing crew asked the Crivitz crew how big of a train they had. The reply... "It's YUGE! It's biggest, best train you've ever seen. Just great."
The Crivitz crew cut off the train just short of the siding leaving the Channing crew to pull it up onto the interchange track to get it out of the way (in the foreground), and then went to retrieve the southbound train. And a few minutes later this meet went off just south of the CN diamond as the Crivitz crew with the 501 departed back toward Green Bay. Pretty good in my book to have shot two trains on the E&LS at once! And that was already better than I thought I might do in E&LS land.
The busy U.S. 141 cuts through Pembine in the foreground. On this particular Wednesday tourist traffic was pretty low but lots of cars (presumably local residents) were still cutting through town and stopping regularly at the local post office, bank, and other various businesses. Unfortunately, last year some delinquents set the beautiful wood depot on fire here at Pembine, leaving nothing but the concrete slab at the corner of the diamonds. The diamond was originally the crossing of the Soo Line headed towards Rhinelander and eventually the Twin Cities (portions of which are still operated by the CN) with the Milwaukee Road from Green Bay into the Upper Peninsula (now the E&LS). It's one of the lesser used diamond crossings in Wisconsin, but still sees regular movements on both railroads from what I understand.

Have a great day!
ELS 500 has just arrived at Channing and has quickly went to work building a outbound train that it will soon take back south. A thick fog has rolled into this very small town. The ELS is a hard to understand operation and is very unpredictable but if you start following the line, eventually you will find something.
