In late 2020, Sydney Seaplanes made a notable landing on Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra, utilising one of its fleet, the Cessna 208 (Caravan 675) aircraft. This event formed part of a trial overseen by the National Capital Authority, which is responsible for the operation and management of the lake.
To ensure the safety of other lake users during the landing, the Canberra Water Police Unit from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) attended the event. Their presence helped manage any potential risks associated with aviation activity on the water.
Following the initial trial, regular public transport aviation services have not been established on Lake Burley Griffin. However, some charter aircraft continue to operate from the lake, providing specialised transport services as needed.
