The dark interior of the Romanesque main church of Lisboa was hard to photograph due to the quality of artificial light. The room was impressive but also quite “heavy” – one of the reasons it has survived numerous earthquakes.

Once touted as the "Pride of Wayne", the demolition of the Wayne Theatre is anything but. It opened in 1927 and is now half demolished at time of writing.
No one thing I have came into contact with during my entire life has made as much of an impact on me as the Wayne Theatre has. Since the time I received my first tour of this magnificent place when I was 12, I joined volunteers attempting to restore it. Around the same time I began to notice the great movie palaces of Detroit and soon all architecture as a whole. If it weren't for the Wayne I would have never taken any interest in Detroit or photography.
I can't help but feel melancholy over the whole situation. It is almost as if this building raised me. A piece of me is missing, and it didn't have to go. To me, this serves as another reminder why the city of Wayne will never be anything but a pathetic sprawl of used car lots and parking. This structure could have been a great catalyst to a revitalized downtown. Why not take a chance on restoring this gem instead of all the failed other attempts of brick pavers, banners, and oh, that $89,000 mural...because everyone is going to say "lets put a business in Wayne because it has a mural!."

Believe it or not, one of the main culprits of ceiling paint cracking is poor paint adhesion. This often happens when the surface wasn't properly prepped before painting. Walsall's parish church of St Matthew overlooks the town from it's hilltop site as it has done for centuries. It's present appearance is mostly the result of remodelling and rebuilding in 1819-21 by architect Francis Goodwin, who entirely recased the nave and tower inside and out with pale Bath stone, which with it's elaborate late Georgian Gothic cast iron traceried windows now appears wholly of that date. The medieval chancel however (though much restored) remains in it's original red sandstone and is in sharp contrast to Goodwin's church.
The interior is stunning and something of a surprise; Goodwin totally replaced the nave arcades with slender cast iron arches supporting spacious galleries on three sides and clerestorey above. But the most memorable feature is the superb plaster ceiling, an early 19th century reimagining of a fan vault complete with huge hanging pendants, which beautifully punctuate it's otherwise flat forms.
Beyond the light and spacious nave (and a fine early 20th century rood screen) is the dark medieval chancel, somewhat restored and gloomy, owing to much late Victorian glass. It sits above a medieval crypt (two separate chambers) and an open passageway that lies under the high altar. The outstanding feature here is the set of medieval choir stalls (augmented by Victorian canopies) with misericords, 18 in all, that have been here since at least the Reformation (believed by some to have originated previously from Halesowen Abbey).
This is a really splendid church that rewards, surprises and welcomes the visitor, though sadly it's open hours outside of services are currently limited.
