Harold boarded with us fairly often while his owners traveled around the world. I took this picture of him almost two years ago and emailed to his parents. His dad told me yesterday that they had been sitting in a cafe in Cambodia, missing Harold, when they received his picture along with an update.
There was something a little "off" about Harold and he was extremely cranky. I was about his only fan, but we got along very well. I think that was because I always let him have his way so he never tried to bite me . When I opened his cage door to clean it and give him fresh food, I let him jump out to walk around the boarding room. He would wrap himself around my legs and arch his back to be patted. When it was time to get him back in his cage, I'd put a treat on his towel and he'd jump right in. He got lots of outings and I never got attacked.
Harold was euthanized yesterday but his family loved him and knew when it was the right time to say goodbye. I will miss him - he was one of a kind - but I have lots of pictures and memories of my funny friend.
Bronze steelyard weight in the form of a man's bust. The broad shoulders, flattened nose, cauliflower ears and top knot of hair suggest this weight represents a boxer or a wrestler.
Although the museum doesn't mention these details, the eyes look like they have silver inlay.

This is a closeup of the face of the Greek bonze so-called ‘Terme Boxer’ or ‘Boxer at Rest’ statue, which was found on the Quirinal Hill in 1885 (along with the ‘Hellenistic Prince’ bronze). Here we can see the details of how copper was used to highlight the wounds on his face and his lips. There’s some speculation that the copper may have been painted red, but there’s no evidence of that practice. Additionally, his nipples are also inlaid with bright copper.
The sculpture represents a bearded, naked, and heavily wounded and scarred boxer. He’s sitting and is resting his himantes-clad (boxing gloves) hands on his knees, and looking off to his right. His nose is scarred and broken, and he has cauliflower ears. Although he’s currently eyeless, he once would have had eyes made from stone and glass.
The sculpture is a Greek work, from a time when realism was in vogue, instead of the usual idealization of the male body. Its date range has been estimated to be 330 to 50 BCE.

update: in January 2007 he announce he is coming out of retirement to try and win the Heavyweight Championship. Good luck dude!!
update 2: He defeated Tim Silvia at UFC 68. all judges had it 50-45, complete domination.
update 3: "retired" from the UFC after failure to get a match with Fedor. Rumour is he will face Fedor in Oct. 2008. I can't wait!
One of my favorite sculptures in Rome - the Boxer was found in 1885 in an excavation on the Quirinal Hill in Rome - and probably came from the Baths of Constantine. Favorite is hard for me - I have too many! Let's say that this is one I teach all the time and always enjoy seeing in person.

Still at the martial arts competition, I followed this guy around for a while until I finally managed to catch him outside of a conversation. He looked so experienced with the Cauliflower ears and the bruise under his eye...
I had been shooting the competition before, and had set the ISO to 1600 to achieve a sufficiently short shutter time. Unfortunately I forgot to set it back to something lower for this shot, so it's a bit noisy. Tried to cover it up with artificial grain, I think it worked quite ok?
Also, this was shot with my zoom lens, so f/4.8 it is. But at least I managed to position myself so that the background was quite far away.

Thursday, June 5th - Been on the phone so much today, I think I developed cauliflower ear. Good things on the horizon. Many decisions to be made.
With all that said, one thing I must promise myself: put makeup on, if not every day, at least every other day. Must not become too comfortable in sweats and baseball caps.

This is what happens when you play rugby. Ask yourself, is it really worth it when you look at yourself in the mirror and see those things sticking out from the sides of your head? Thought not!
Ears sore? Unless you want that cauliflower ear, don't forget that headgear! After years of training, my ears are still pretty fresh!

El Camino is doing great but will need a new foster home next week. He's been in temp foster and he is loving the bed! He's been getting to know the apartment and is continuing to warm up to the foster folk. He'll rub up on their legs but he is still touchy about petting.
