Routes des Crêtes

Licence plate of a "pointu", traditional power boat from Provence in Cassis France.

In summer Cassis is incredibly popular but we took to going down there early or late. Arrive at 11am and you could queue for an hour to park a car.

Amo craquelados!

Amei!

Nestled along the sun-kissed shores of the Mediterranean, there is a quaint village named Cassis. This charming port, with its colorful houses and bustling harbor, had a history as rich and vibrant as the sea that lapped at its shores.

Long ago, in the 3rd century BC, the Ligures, an ancient people, discovered this idyllic spot. They built their stronghold, Baou Redoun, high above the port, where they could gaze out over the azure waters and protect their newfound home. Over the centuries, Cassis grew from a humble fishing village into a beloved destination, where the scent of lavender mingled with the salty sea breeze, and the laughter of locals and visitors alike filled the air.

But the true magic of Cassis lay just beyond its harbor, in the rugged and breathtaking landscape of the Calanques. These limestone inlets, carved by time and nature, stretched between Marseille and Cassis, creating a series of hidden coves and dramatic cliffs. The Calanques were formed over millions of years, shaped by the relentless forces of water and wind, and later submerged by the rising sea.

Among these natural wonders were the famous Calanque de Sormiou, Calanque de Morgiou, and Calanque d’En-Vau, each more stunning than the last. The Massif des Calanques, a majestic range of limestone peaks, stood as a testament to the power and beauty of nature.

In 2012, recognizing the need to protect this unique landscape, the Calanques National Park was established. This park became a sanctuary for diverse ecosystems and a haven for adventurers. Hikers, climbers, and nature lovers flocked to the Calanques, eager to explore the hidden trails, scale the towering cliffs, and immerse themselves in the serene beauty of this Mediterranean paradise.

As the sun set over the village of Cassis, casting a golden glow over the harbor and the Calanques, it was easy to see why this place had captured the hearts of so many. Cassis and the Calanques, with their rich history and natural splendor, were a storybook come to life, a place where the past and present danced together in perfect harmony.

And so, the tale of Cassis and the Calanques continues, inviting all who visit to become a part of its timeless story.
