Apprentice machinist Miley Johnson at the metal fabrication station she now oversees at Orion Aerospace near Sea-Tac Airport outside Seattle. Johnson, 36, who is in recovery, came to Orion six years ago from a bartending job that paid $5.75 an hour plus tips. She'd worked previously as a welder's helper on pipielines. In 2011, she earned an associate's degree in manufacturing technology from Green River Community College and she's taking more classes at night at Bates Technical College. "I make $15 an hour more than back then, plus benefits, profit-sharing and also a 401(k)," says Johnson, who will soon be certified. How did she do it? ';Determination. It’s not easy going to school full time and working fulltime. It takes a lot of structure and determination to be better than what you are now. That was my goal.' Her mentor, John Logan, says, ';I watched Miley grow to where she is today, running her own department.' CEO John Thiesen says the aerospace industry needs more well-trained workers like Johnson. 'There's such a big surge in aerospace now the suppliers are already struggling with workforce demands and it’s going to get worse as we get near that retirement cliff.' Orion won a Boeing Supplier of the Year Award in 2011.
