This is the kind of picture that results in your camera getting hit by a surprise low-hanging tree branch. Thank god for UV filters, bahaha.

Not quite what I was looking for with this, but I'll inevitably end up trying it again next time I can borrow Elli's car. And probably building a car rig soon, too.

Lots of experiments going on here.

Trying out my cheap ebay car mount for the first time with a brand new camera and borrowed lens.

Jogging beside the car incase.

6 second exposure.

Byron popping the flash 3-4 times, Tarek driving in a slow circle.

And finally applying a 'vintage film' effect in ps that I just found in the Technique Group.

Ill try the car mount again since it worked well enough.

First time using a suction-cup-mounted camera mount. The results are seen above! This one's my favorite, by the way.

How to mount a Canon XL-2 to a 1967 Cadillac.

This is a rig I came up with. It uses:

Two 4.5" vacuum cups with 1/4-20 stud (Wood's Powr-Grip model LJ45AMP)

One 6" vacuum cup with 1/4-20 stud (Wood's Powr-Grip model TL6AMB)

Two variable friction Magic Arms (Manfrotto model 244N)

One locking Magic Arm (Manfrotto model 143N)

One Magic Arm camera platform (Manfrotto model 143BKT)

Two Super Clamps (Manfrotto model 035)

We put several miles on this rig in various mounting locations and it performed flawlessly. This rig was subsequently loaned to the owner of the camera you see here and it was run into a mailbox (unintentionally, of course) by the driver of the car it was mounted to. The camera came apart at the lens mount, which was later repaired. The mount stayed on the car except one of the vacuum cups released its vacuum. The camera never touched the ground.

A little about California field mustard.

From:

www.discover-central-california.com/field-of-mustard.html

“The traditional (and probably true) story has always been that Father Junipero Serra, the founder of the California mission system, introduced mustard to the region. As he and the other friars trod along the El Camino Real, they sowed mustard seeds. The story further relates that one of the reasons for this planting was to mark the route with the yellow flowers.

Another reason was to increase the availability of this plant which was prized for its medicinal properties.”

I vowed shortly after moving to Tracy I would not die there!

Luckily I was able to keep my word.

I’m gone, leaving much faster than 55 mph.

Tracy is a wasteland of fast food, warehouses, overpopulation, hideous smells, incompetent governess, and traffic traffic traffic.

Given Gertrude Stein was alive today Tracy rather than Oakland would have gained her moniker there is no there there!

Goodbye Tracy and California, Nevada is the place for me.

I’ll resume shooting as soon as we are settled in.

I can’t wait to explore this wonderful state and its people!

My brother got himself a Cullmann 1003 suction pad. So we figured it might make some nice photos to stick the camera to the side of the car.

Here are a few shots of the result of this series.

Per request, a bit of vid shot using the gorillapod as a car mount for the diminutive LX3

On board camera in Victoria, BC

I've become very interested in capturing movement and long exposures. I am experimenting with a Powr-Grip vacuum suction cup with a Manfrotto 3D camera head mounted on the trunk of my car. It's a little nerve-wracking at first, but the longer we were out the more secure I felt. These shots are purely experimental and hopefully will improve as I become more knowledgeable. The next step is attaching it to the side of my car...just to add to the anxiety! These shots would just about be impossible without the help of my assistant. Thanks, Jill!

Final project for my cinematography class!

For this one we had to choose a book and interpret a chosen paragraph in the style of our favorite paintings or photographs. After some discussion with friends I chose one from "On The Road" by Jack Kerouac. It's not a literal translation, but I put my own little spin on it :)

“In New York I had been attending school and romancing around with a girl called Lucille, a beautiful Italian honey-haired darling that I actually wanted to marry. All of these years I was looking for the woman I wanted to marry. I couldn’t meet a girl without saying to myself, what kind of wife would she make? I told Dean and Marylou about Lucille. Marylou wanted to know all about Lucille, she wanted to meet her. We zoomed through Richmond, Washington, Baltimore and up to Philadelphia on a winding country road and talked. ‘I want to marry a girl,’ I told them, ‘so I can rest my soul with her till we both get old. This can’t go on all the time – all this franticness and jumping around. We’ve got to go someplace, find something.”

Shot with a 5DMKII, 50mm and 28-135mm lens, each with CPLs. For the driving shots I used my buddies suction car mount from filmtools.

Special thanks to my friends Chris Acker and Taylor Haynes for helping out and acting!

My first attempt at a rig shot using a hague car mount kit.

Canon 30D with sigma 10-20mm.

On the road from Borrego Springs to the Salton Sea Beach and surrounds, this area is under heavily depression and abandonment, a searing portrait of America in 2010 and the recent past of 30 years or so. There is some money here but not much.

The vague historical knowledge I have is that this area was originally pinned as an alternative to Palm Springs Resort area, which lay nestled on the edge of the Salton Sea Lake, and as the developers were carving up the area and building the requisite Californian specifics like roads and communications and basic drainage, the local area farmers to the south and to the north were redirecting the precious water to irrigate their crops and as the water level dropped so did the purchasing interest as the salt precipitation rose. Now Google Maps will show your the streets, but the eye will show you the void.

In so many ways this area is absolutely stunningly beautiful to me.

April 20, 2008 - I got my car back last week from getting the top fixed in time for summer, and even though we're going through a cold snap right now it's really nice to get out in the fresh air.

Inspired by a new Flickr group on car mounted cameras. I used my suction mount inside the passenger window with my Vivitar 285HV at 1/2 power sitting on the seat aimed at a piece of foamcore to soften the light.
