Race Rocks Lighthouse was built in 1860 and is the second oldest lighthouse on the Canadian Pacific coast. It cast its first beam of light on December 26, 1860.
It is the only lighthouse on BC’s coast that is constructed of stone. Most of the stone that makes up the tower was quarried in Scotland, while the top third is made from sandstone from nearby Gabriola Island.
One of the most striking features of the lighthouse is its black and white stripes, something no other nearby lighthouses have.
The Canadian Coast Guard automated the lighthouse in 1997. Victoria-based Pearson College continues to staff the station. (orcaspirit.com)
If you squint, you can see two tiny triangles in the calmer section of water just below the house on the island. This was our only view of Harbour Porpoises!

An enjoyable walk through the Watermeads Nature Reserve alongside the river Wandle. The Watermeads or “water meadows” were amongst first properties acquired by the National Trust. Following extensive rehabilitation programme to reintroduce water meadows to support natural habitat the reserve has been reopened recently for the public. It is one of many little green gems in the middle of the big city. I was attracted by the clarity of the fast-flowing river when a lonely Canada goose (Branta canadensis) wondered into the frame. It is said, “Canadian contributes the Banff and Jasper National Parks to the world, but keeps the Kananaskis park for themselves”. Kananaskis park is a provincial park, not as famous as Banff and Jasper. But there is comparable Rocky Mountains and lakes. It is a very quiet place, no people around, nice trails to walk around the lakes and mountains, really enjoyed the most at this peaceful and quiet place! The photo was taken on the backyards of the camping sites. The walks were great with awesome views of the lakes from the back of camping sites.
The Prince Edward Point Lighthouse, built in 1881, is a squaretapered wooden lighthouse with an attached dwelling. The lighthouse is located on the eastern tip of Prince Edward Point, Ontario. Besides the combined 7.8-metre (26 foot) lighthouse and keeper’s residence, the lightstation also includes a detached shed. The lighthouse was automated in 1941 and operated until 1959 when it was replaced by a steel skeleton tower.
The lighthouse is associated with various shipwrecks that occurred in this area, colloquially called the “Graveyard of Lake Ontario”.
The Prince Edward Point Lighthouse supported the shipping industry, marking a safe avenue for commercial ships travelling through the waters of Lake Ontario for nearly 80 years. The lighthouse marks the only protected harbour for a distance of approximately 60 nautical miles.

The end of the trail at the Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory, the lighthouse is a good spot to look for sea ducks during migration, as well as gulls and cormorants. Over 300 species of birds have been recorded on the trails and lake.

A pair of goslings was accompanying their parents in Tom McCall Waterfront Park while I was on my walk. I think they're so cute at this age!
These are among my favourite birds, inquisitive, interesting and so expressive, they are such a joy to photograph and watch in the north! Only the smartest birds can survive in such conditions, and the Canada Jay is certainly among the most intelligent.
The flooding of the meadows in the "Assebroekse Meersen" offers places to swim as well as rest for these Canada geese and other water fowl.

The Coast Mountains are a major mountain range in the Pacific Coast Ranges of western North America, extending from southwestern Yukon through the Alaska Panhandle and virtually all of the Coast of British Columbia south to the Fraser River. The mountain range's name derives from its proximity to the sea coast, and it is often referred to as the Coast Range. The range includes volcanic and non-volcanic mountains and the extensive ice fields of the Pacific and Boundary Ranges, and the northern end of the volcanic system known as the Cascade Volcanoes. The Coast Mountains are part of a larger mountain system called the Pacific Coast Ranges or the Pacific Mountain System, which includes the Cascade Range, the Insular Mountains, the Olympic Mountains, the Oregon Coast Range, the California Coast Ranges, the Saint Elias Mountains and the Chugach Mountains. The Coast Mountains are also part of the American Cordillera—a Spanish term for an extensive chain of mountain ranges—that consists of an almost continuous sequence of mountain ranges that form the western backbone of North America, Central America, South America and Antarctica.
The Coast Mountains are approximately 1,600 kilometres (1,000 mi) long and average 300 kilometres (190 mi) in width. The range's southern and southeastern boundaries are surrounded by the Fraser River and the Interior Plateau while its far northwestern edge is delimited by the Kelsall and Tatshenshini Rivers at the north end of the Alaska Panhandle, beyond which are the Saint Elias Mountains, and by Champagne Pass in the Yukon Territory. Covered in dense temperate rainforest on its western exposures, the range rises to heavily glaciated peaks, including the largest temperate-latitude ice fields in the world. On its eastern flanks, the range tapers to the dry Interior Plateau and the subarctic boreal forests of the Skeena Mountains and Stikine Plateau.
The Coast Mountains are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire—the ring of volcanoes and associated mountains around the Pacific Ocean—and contain some of British Columbia's highest mountains. Mount Waddington is the highest mountain of the Coast Mountains and the highest that lies entirely within British Columbia, located northeast of the head of Knight Inlet with an elevation of 4,019 metres (13,186 ft).
