I have been working for 4 months and it's been 6 months since my layoff, I don't miss my old job, but I really like my new one!
I composed this photograph while visiting the Calgary Stampede, a 10 day summer festival in Calgary, Alberta. It is of a young woman presenting her Miniature Horse to the judges in the Miniature Horse Halter Competition. A special moment for both of them.
The Stampede has a strong western flavour to it, its rodeo being a centrepiece attraction, for example. And there are many other 'Western' events such as the one pictured above.
While waiting for the First Nations dancers to assemble, I asked this man if I might take his photo. His name is Yari and he is from Stoney Nakoda First Nation in Morley, Alberta (60 kms west of Calgary).
When I looked at the photo later, the busy and colourful background didn't seem to jive with his dignified pose. It seemed appropriate to swap out the background with a photo I took 10 years ago in Morley, where he lives.

Horse-drawn old time rigs prepare to park, pick up visitors, and take them on a tour of downtown Calgary during the Stampede.
Calgary Stampede, late 1950's, some weird horse stunt, I'm told the horse goes off ladder and jumps into the water tank below... really... just strange!

With all the construction in downtown Calgary, traffic can get a little congested at times. It's unusual to see people riding horses but, HAY, it's the Stampede!

When I was downtown today, I recognized this gentleman as one of the square dancers I photographed two years ago during the Calgary Stampede. (That photo is in my Flickr Calgary Stampede album as well as in the first comment below.)
I had a chance to talk to him briefly and gave him my card so he could find his photo on Flickr, and I thought I would post this candid photo I took of him today. It was nice to meet you, Jamie!
I've been down on the Calgary Stampede grounds lots this week in between long hours at work, all of them evening photos, just trying to keep up with my photos... And off to the races again today, finally the weekend...

**The Chuckwaggon races are exciting, however it is a very dangerous sport. My Father's Uncle was an outrider and his life was taken many years ago.

I think everybody was expecting this, but it was still a big blow to hear the official announcement. The Stampede had been running continuously for more than 90 years, through depressions and wars. Even the disastrous floods of June 2013, which swamped all the buildings and facilities on the Stampede Grounds, didn't stop the show from going on in July of the same year. I didn't make it out last year, but had a great time there in 2018, and will repost images from that time, or mine the archives for ones I haven't shared yet... It will be a VERY quiet summer...
I had my camera ready as we passed this trailer of horses on the highway. Presumably they were on their way to the Calgary Stampede.
We just stood there watching it for a while, totally distracted by the green tinge to the clouds and the weird calm. Creepy doesn't quite describe it.
